We recently finished up our latest culinary tour of China in the Spring of 2011. Guilin a beautiful city in China’s South, is one of the top destinations for Chinese tourists. A quick glimpse of the scenery with the karst formations tells you why. Yangshou is a couple hours from Guilin, just as beautiful, and far less touristy.
Here are some quick mini reviews of places we ate at in Guilin and Yangshou. We feel this will be useful as more people visit this up-and-coming area. We found few reviews on Trip Advisor and Dianping.
We have full reviews for:
Guilin Food Festival
Shang Palace Guilin
Shangri La Guilin Li Cafe Buffet
If a restaurant does not have a website, we link to their Dianping page if available.
Li River Cuisine Restaurant aka Guilin Congee City – 桂林粥城.漓江菜(杉湖店)
This busy Cantonese, Guilianese restaurant serves up average food in a busy, crazy atmosphere. Skewers are available at the door but looked pretty scary.

Dashifu beerfish – 大师傅
A local restaurant chain, famous for their beer fish. We ate here because it was located within walking distance of Impression Sanjie Liu, a show almost everyone who comes here, watches. Be sure you have your ride set up for after the show, otherwise chaos will ensue.
Hits: Beer fish, crispy chicken, glutinous rice in bamboo.

Yue Lai Fu – 陈水保赏月楼
Yue Lai Fu means good luck with the moon. It is probably named like this because this area has a view of the “moon rock mountain”. This area is right across the street from a touristy spot called the Totem Ancient Trail.
This restaurant is frequented by tour buses and features people trying to sell you a picture of yourself with a dressed up monkey. We were amazed by this ‘dump’. The chicken was simply awesome as was the beer fish.

KFC
Foodies will laugh that we included KFC in our restaurant Roundup. We admit that we have urges for some flavors from home.. KFC was an early entrant into China, and has done a stellar job localizing their menu for Chinese tastes.
The interesting part of KFC is that they serve Rice porridge or jook for breakfast. This jook was pretty darn good, far superior to anything that we have back home. The heavenly Chinese doughnut or yau tiu takes 5 minutes because it is freshly fried. Their Portuguese egg tarts are also excellent. And yes, we didn’t have any fried chicken here. And yes, we did go to McDonald’s and found it pretty ho-hum, although the fries were good.
