Foodnut travels, eats, and tells. We’re based in San Francisco but have flown all over the place. We love Mexican food and find some of the best in Cancun.
We recently finished up our latest culinary tour of Cancun in 2018. Other reviews farther down are from previous trips. Cancun is a world class destination full of great food. Most of the Mexican food was superior to that in the San Francisco Bay Area. The service is on another level here.
- Here are some quick mini reviews of places we ate at, so you can understand how Cancun food compares, and so you select the best places on your visit.
- We have full reviews for places we deemed important enough.

Chstr is an Italian Pizza, Pasta restaurant across the street from the Mariott in Cancun. We were nearby and wanted to eat at some place nicer than McDonalds. (Next door) Boy was this an interesting find. Whimsical decor with pots, pans, kitchen tools and more. We really worried that it would be dismal, but came away surprised.
The food was better than expected. Portion sizes are ridiculously large. One pasta dish is enough for 4!
A nice casual place for families and more simple meals. There are far too many expensive places next door and at the hotels. Just say no to sushi or a steak in Mexico.
Menu:
Large menu with lots of drink, pizza, pasta, and salad options. Lots of English on the menu.
Service:
Reasonable service, considering the place only had about 10 tables at the time.
Food Picks:
Acapulcoco Coconut and Strawberry Smoothie ($100) was SUPER tall and really good.
Don Corleone Pasta (Mex $270) Bacon, Mushrooms, Garlic and Cream was HUGE. Enough for 3 people easily. Creamy and well done.
Ana Lucia Pizza ($270) Spinach, Bacon, Philadelphia, Gorgonzola Cheese, Cranberries, Honey had for more of an interesting flat bread than pizza.
It could have been more crispy, but it was huge and decent.

Sasi Thai is a stylish open air restaurant located in the Marriott Hotel. It has a low 3.5 stars on Yelp. Can you believe we liked it enough to go back twice? Shockingly to believe that some dishes are superior to the various Thai places we have in San Francisco like Ler Ros.
Menu:
Pretty standard wide ranging Thai restaurant menu.
Service:
The place was not very busy so they had attentive service that reminded us of other special places.
Food Picks:
Martini Maracuya (Mex $210) was balanced and strong.
Complimentary wonton chip, nut starter.
Yum Woonsen (4oz $195) Glass noodle salad, minced chicken, onion, celery and tomato was a great starter. Very little meat. The name does not describe it well.
Phad Thai shrimp (Mex $330 5 pieces) Sautéed rice noodles with egg, bean sprouts, fried onions, serrano pepper, scallions and coriander in a tamarind sauce was really good. Hard to believe.
Kra Pong Dang Ma Praow (7oz $460) Sea bass filet, Bangkok style rice, sautéed bok choy, mango-cucumber and errant chili relish was fantastic. How could this be? Not too spicy and a balance between sweet, bitter, and sour.
Gaeng Som Goong (5oz $380) Seafood curry with shrimp, scallops, calamari, mussels, coconut milk, pineapple, bell peppers, onions, grapefruit and orange supremes, lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves was also a very good dish. Nice mild curry with well cooked fish.
Mango Sticky rice dessert is small but a must order. Nice fresh mango.

McDonalds Cancun Zazil-Ha

We love to travel and see how a restaurant adapts to different countries. McDonald’s in Mexico surprisingly has a lot of menu items that are different from the United States. Many that are better! In the spring of 2018 we visited in McDonald’s in Cancun, Mexico. We suspect that this spot has a pretty standard menu available in most areas of Mexico. This location has a drive through.
Menu:
Aside from the usual menu items being renamed, there are different set of burgers, sides, and breakfast items. Prices are similar to US prices. Cuarto de Libra aka Quarter pound with cheese costs Mexican $83 quick equals US $4.60. This costs about $4.79 in the USA. Very similar prices.
Other unique items:
- Club House Signature Burger
- Guacamole Signature Burger
- Habanero Ranch McTrio Burger
- Cheddar Bacon Onion McTrio Burger
- Oreo flavor soft serve cone
- Salsa bar
Service:
The place was not very busy and took a while to get the food out. Slow motion!
Food Picks:
Barbecue with Crispy Onion Signature burger ($124 = US$6.87) burger is essentially a double burger with bacon and barbecue sauce. It was act actually really well done, hot and had cook meat flavor. We wish we had this in the United States. Better than the Singnature Crafted Sweet BBQ Bacon burger.
McPatatas Jr ($20) potatoes are on the Mexican menu and prove to be very good. Nice change from fries. Nice and crispy.
Aros de Cebolla ($20) Onion rings were on the small side, but freshly fried and nicely better. Also a great thing to order here.
Vanilla Oreo malteadas ($25) what’s the sensually a slightly less thick milkshake, with optional oriole Mixon. This was 80s and train, nothing exceptional.
