Reviewer: Foodnut.com Shihlin Night Market Between Dadong Road, Danan Road, Wenlin Road and Jihua Road Taipei, Taiwan |
The Shihlin Night Market in Taipei, Taiwan is a must visit for food loving travelers. It is obviously located in the Shilin District of Taipei, just a couple blocks from the Jiantan MRT subway station. (Not Shihlin Station) This is the largest and most famous night market in the city and typically starts up around 4pm in the afternoon.
Here are some pictures and videos of our night market experience:
The main entrance leads to a covered area which mainly contains gift booths, games, and other touristy shops.
Of interest is the shrimp fishing located to the immediate right. 7 poles for NT$100. If you caught a shrimp, they will skewer it and cooked the little crustacean. Boy where they tasty.
The Lonely Planet Tour book said to avoid the basement’s food court due to poor air circulation. Boy is that bad advice.
Downstairs you will find a busy bustling food center with stalls that sell: seafood, desserts, noodles, stinky tofu, skewers, sausages, juices, classic Taiwanese egg dishes, milk tea, bakeries and more.
One of our best meals was at the vendor against the wall, all the way to the left after you walk downstairs.
Fried Mini Crabs NT$150 in eggless batter, King Oyster Mushrooms NT$100 chopped and grilled, Fresh abalone NT$200 for 5, Fresh Tiger Prawns NT$400 for 4 cooked salt and pepper style. Grilled fresh while you wait. Everything was SUPER fresh and tasty. The main downside was the small simple tables and hectic environment. Everything is incredibly cheap and we did not get sick from eating this.
Oh My, Uniquely Shaped Cakes
The Shihlin market’s size is such because it connects to all the streets and shops that are behind this main structure.
Tons of Street Food
Preserved Vegetables
You will find a ton of clothing, shoes, and other retail stores here. Sometimes a vendor will popup in the middle of the walkway selling stuff. No need to worry about hunger, food stands are everywhere. The better ones have long lines.
Fresh Fruit that is sold on a stick or as juice
Cheap and Delicious Scallops and Abalone
Interesting games including the standard use a grappling hook to win a prize. The prize was an iPad Mini or Galaxy Note 3 though! Hope the box is not empty.
Yummy Donuts
Seafood Street Food
We liked it so much we came back twice!
Street Food
Lots of Sausages
Other Night Markets to consider include: Shida, Keelung, Raohe.
