Be sure to read about our best meal in Peru – Quipas, Lima
The Peruvian food was superior to that in the San Francisco Bay Area and much cheaper. The service is on the whole not as good..
Here are some quick mini reviews of places we ate at, so you can understand how Peruvian food compares, and so you select the best places on your visit. We focus on non-touristy, local food and avoid long tasting menus.
We have full reviews for places we deemed important enough.

Manolo
Av. José Larco 608, Miraflores 15074
Lima, Peru
https://manolo.com.pe/
Why did we eat here? – We love churros and Manolo has been around since 1968 serving up all sorts of treats. It is located in the touristy Miraflores district, right on the main street. We just walked up to the counter and ordered a churro.
Sit down Menu is pretty extensive with lots of food and pastry items. They have several stuffed churros along with classic ones. You can have sugar added to them.
Service was fine. They work fast.
Food Review:
classic churro (S/7.70) was light, crisp, and satisfying. Must get if you are nearby. 10/10

La Lucha Sangucheria
Av. José Larco 999, Miraflores 15074
Lima Peru
https://lalucha.com.pe/
Why did we eat here? – La Lucha Sangucheria is a fast food chain of Peruvian restaurants that server sandwiches along with fresh juices and other items. They are known for pan con chicharrón and we can hear just for that. This locations was on the main drag in Miraflores. Their chief rival is: El Chinito Sangucheria
Menu is very concise with just a selection of sandwiches, potatoes, and juices. Not much for vegetarians.
The food was about what we expected. Better quality than you find in most fast food in the US.
Service was helpful in ordering and translating for us. Food is brought to your table.
Food Review:
Chicharron Sanguches Criollos (S/23.90) had really good bread and reasonable quantities of meat. Wish the meat had crispy skin. Comes with onions that hit the spot. 8/10
Papas fritas Juni (S/6.90) are thick cut fries with skin still on. Nicely fried and seasoned. 9/10
Jugo de Mango (S/10.90) is freshly made and not very sweet, as we asked for no sugar. 9/10

Los Auténticos Churros Españoles de la Virgen del Carmen
Jirón Lampa 254, Lima, Peru

https://www.facebook.com/churrosespanolesvirgendelcarmen/
Why did we eat here? – Los Auténticos Churros was part of our Lima tour. The group stopped and we could select a Churro. There are a bunch of these shops in the area of the Basílica and Convent of San Francisco.
Menu is pretty narrow with either Chocolate, Carmel or Vanilla. The Crema Churro (S/3.50) Carmel was eggless and very sweet. This Peruvian version was much larger than the classic churro we had at Manolo.

Quipas
Calle Alcanfores 174, Miraflores 15074
908 913 878
https://www.mesa247.pe/en/lima/restaurant/quipas
Why did we eat here? – Quipas is a restaurante de cocina peruana contemporánea ubicado in Lima, Peru. Not a big spot, about 12 tables and a bar counter. They serve lunch and dinner. This was our first dinner in Peru and a highly anticipated one that is rated at 4.9 on Google. (They do ask you to leave a review after you pay) A fellow foodie suggested we try this spot. We were trying to get the best of Peru, but without expensive multi-hour tasting menus.
Reservations are necessary but can be easily made online. The first diners at 7pm where all Americans!
Menu is bigger than expected with lots of starters and entrees. English menu is available. Not a lot of vegetarian options. Come with a larger party to try more dishes. They take dietary restrictions seriously.
The food was beautiful and was even better than expected. Dishes just worked. Even a special dessert was created on the fly to maneuver around a dietary restriction.
Service was very good with folks passing by all the time. No the type of overwhelming service you get at a 3 star spot. Friendly with lots of help ordering and ensuring a dietary restriction were relayed.
Quipas was fantastic with inventive cuisine that looked great and worked. If you are in Lima, put this spot on your short list. If Michelin Guide was published in Peru, they’d rank it one or two stars. Meal for 2 cost about USD$125, it would cost at least double in San Francisco.
Food Review:
CHOCLITO A LA BRASA (S/42) Salsa huancaína / Quesos peruanos / Porcón was like a corn Mac n cheese. Their corn had much larger kernels and the cheese was not overwhelming. This dish was good but the only one we would not reorder. 8.5/10
PULPITO ROSTIZADO (S/62) Papas nativas / Escabeche / Hierbas andinas had lots of diced up perfectly cooked octopus along with delicate curly fried string potatoes. 10/10
COLIFLOR (S/49) – Ají de Coliflor / Anís estrella / Cañihua / Cardamomo was a beautifully baked cauliflower with a thick brown cardamom sauce. Perfectly cooked. 10/10
ARROZ CON PATO AHUMADO (S/115) Loche / Chicha de jora / Magret / Culantro is a large dish with thinly sliced duck and rice in a steel pan. Almost look like a beautiful looking paella. We had the runny egg on the side. Includes a spicy salt on the side. 10/10
Pescado al bijas (S/78) Pesca del día / Achiote / Cocona was a meaty Amazon river fish. Slathered with sauce, this was also perfectly cooked and came with rice on the side. If you like this type of meaty fish its 10/10, otherwise 8.5/10
Pan de Mashua (S/17) is a unique dark colored potato based eggless bread. Includes a really nice herbed butter. Hot out of the over, this was fantastic. They said it is not sold outside. 10/10
CHIRIMOYA de cumbe (S/39) was a custom made dessert made for us due to dietary restrictions. They cooked a thick cherimoya fruit slice and topped it with a corn sorbet. The fruit was slightly firm with a pineapple consistency. You could barely taste the corn in the sorbet. Vegan! 10/10

Isolina
Av. San Martín 101, Lima 15063
Peru
943 833 031
https://isolina.pe/
Why did we eat here? – Isolina is a popular traditional Peruvian restaurant in the stylish Barranco neighborhood. We finished looking around this cool area and came for a la carte dinner. Dining room is on the ground floor and 2nd floor. Rustic old school wood all over.
We booked online and had to have a credit card loaded. The restaurant does not close in the afternoon, so anyone without a reservation can probably get in before the dinner rush happens.
Menu is very wide ranging with lots of classics from ceviche to loco salted to many others. Prices are not cheap. There is an English menu available.
The food was very good and in copious quantities. Try not to over order or overeat! Traditional dishes done right.
Service was good but not great. We had to hail the waiter several times. They did know their stuff and helped us navigate the menu.
Nothing wrong with this popular spot, but our first meal in Lima was at far better Quipas. It was only US$20 more but on another level technically and taste-wise.
Food Review:
Cebiche con chicharron de pulpo (S/97) is a huge portion of fish, fried octopus with corn nuts, yams and more. The fish was fresh and well done. The fried octopus was cooked just right. This is enough to share for 2 or more. 9/10
Oso bucco (S/94 small) comes with a red sauce that looks like an enhanced pasta one. Tender veal that went well with the sauce and rich mash potatoes. 9/10
Lomo Saltado (S/74 small) was still a large portion. If you count how much beef there was, you can see it was mostly fries and onions. Good flavors and perfectly cooked. 9/10
Arroz con leche (S/20) was a very sweet dessert. No issues with the rice and flavors. 8.5/10

We were staying at this nice hotel and had free breakfast from our credit card. Their breakfast buffet was pretty average and a bit disappointing. Selection was not vast and quality was not high. It is adequate but not inspired.
We also had free credit to use at their JW Market informal cafe and found the food there also subpar. Sandwiches, smoothies, acai bowl.

Don Angel Inka Casona Restaurant
Apv. Tarapata S/N, Maras
(084) 201624
https://www.facebook.com/donangelrestaurantbuffet/?locale=es_LA
Why did we eat here? – Don Angel is a popular Peruvian lunch buffet that many tour groups go to. Our taxi driver took us here while on the way to the Sacred Valley. It is situated up the hill from Urubamba. Live music is played.
Sol/85 per person or about US$25.
It was a great way to taste all sorts of Peruvian food from alpaca to cay – guinea pig and everything in between. Appetizers, soups, salads, entrees, desserts and more. The food quality was fine, noting extraordinary but not junky crap.
Service was okay. They mainly take plates away and get drink orders.

Los Tito’s Polleria
Av. Mariscal Castilla 101
Urubamba 08661
Why did we eat here? – We were looking for a quick informal dinner in the Sacred Valley – Urubamba and found this local restaurant Los Tito’s. The place was almost full and the prices right. We had not tried legendary Peruvian chicken, so it was perfect. This is not a beautiful restaurant, just passable decor wise. No tourists were present or seen nearby.
Menu is pretty short, different chicken combos, Anticuchos, and Mollejitas.
The food was better than expected. No wonder locals packed the place.
Service was order, pay, and the food is brought to you.
Food Review:
1/4 Pollo a la Brasa (Sol/19 = USD$6) was our first time trying this Peruvian dish. It comes with a side of forgettable soup. Tons of hot fries, some rice, and a huge 1/4 chicken. Wow. The chicken was juicy, tender and flavorful. The wing had spices and was nicely done. Brined in some nice spices. Impressive. 10/10

INKASAL

Why did we eat here? – INKASAL was one of the few restaurants in the area during our Sacred Valley tour. Our guide suggested we eat here. The view is drop dead gorgeous. They have some alpacas grazing outside. Rated 4.5 on Google, 4.3 on Trip advisor.
Menu was pretty wide ranging with everything from classic Peruvian dishes to burgers.
The food was solid but not exceptional. Only go if you have to.
Service was drop and go.
Food Review:
Saltado de alpaca Plato (S/65) or alpaca was salty and the meat gamey and a bit tough. Fries were ok. 7.5/10
Trucha en salsa de sauco plato (S/55) or Trout in elderberry sauce had 2 huge pieces of fish and a side salad plus a couple veggies. Better than expected. 8/10

Why did we eat here? – We were staying at the Tambo del Inka and had their Breakfast Buffet. Normal cost is $30 per person, it’s discounted to USD$18 for Bonvoy members and free with select credit card bookings.
This is one beautiful hotel that lies under the Marriott banner. The ground are huge and impressive. Highly recommended when you visit the sacred valley. We decided to hit the buffet because of the vast selection and reasonable cost.
Food stations include a Chinese one, kids, bread and pastries, gluten free items, condiments, cooked items, cereals, fruits, and more. Allergens are clearly labeled for each dish. This buffet is far better than our previous hotel, the JW Mariott Lima.
A breakfast Menu is available for ordering at no extra cost. Everything from omelets, avocado toast to Pan de Chicarron sandwiches.
The food quality was very good.
Service was also very good. No worries about getting a beverage, ordering, etc. Everyone is extremely courteous here.

Tierra Cocina Artesanal

Peru
974 213 502
Why did we eat here? – Tierra Cocina Artesanal is a Peruvian restaurant that had decent reviews and was near our hotel. It stays open from lunch through dinner. There are several nice organic stores – gift shops on the same block.
The patio is slightly open to the elements but nicely sheltered.
Menu is not as comprehensive as most, which is a good thing.
The food was good to very good, nothing exceptional to make a detour for.
Service was reasonable but missed an important detail.
Food Review:
Complimentary amuse bouche was a nice touch.
Panceta de cerdo BBQ (Sol/50) is more of a braised pulled pork in a BBQ Sauce. Did not seem very Peruvian but it was solid. 8/10
Pulpo 200 Millas (Sol/65) or octopus had lots of tender octopus but was on the salty side. Had to get a side of white rice to tamp it down. 7.5/10

Tampu Restaurant
Sanctuary Lodge, A Belmond Hotel Machu Picchu
Carretera Hiram Bingham Km 7.5, Aguas Calientes 08680
984 816 956
https://www.belmond.com/en/hotels/south-america/peru/sanctuary-lodge-machu-picchu/restaurants-and-bars
Why did we eat here? – Tampu is the main restaurant in the Sanctuary Lodge at Machu Picchu. Breakfast and lunch are open to hotel guests & non-hotel guests (based on availability – reserve ahead). Breakfast buffet costs US$35 to non guests. Dinner is open to hotel guests only. The other restaurant next door is a lunch buffet Tinkuy for the general public USD$44, that the hotel also runs. It is open 530am-930am
Hotel guests get a free breakfast, lunch and dinner at Tampu. A great deal! Note: The hotel is not cheap but it’s the only option to stay next to Machu Picchu. A bucket list hotel for me.
We stayed at the hotel and ate lunch and dinner. Sanctuary Lodge is highly recommended! We were able to take 3 different routes into Machu Picchu due to this hotel The service is unbelievable competent and extremely friendly.
On a budget?
Hack to Comfortably take 2 Machu Picchu Routes done in 1 day!
Tampu breakfast buffet is great if you have 2 different tickets for the same day at Machu Picchu. Reserve ahead.
- You can go do route 6am Route 1C – Panoramico, Ruta Portada Intipunku – Sun Gate
- Eat Breakfast at Tampu buffet, hit the restrooms, and then take in your noon hike.
- Route 2A Circuito Clasico – Classic Citadel at 10:00
No need to take the long winding bus ride to Aguas Calientes plus this meal is A LOT cheaper than staying at the Sanctuary Lodge next door.
Menu changes from breakfast to lunch to dinner. Menu Items are sourced from the local area, and almost everything comes in by train. A slightly lower cost bar menu is also available.
The food and drink were ‘free’ but better than expected. We would rate many dishes superior to places like Isolina in Lima. Daily Andean music 7:30-9pm. Allergens are clearly marked.
Service was extremely friendly and thorough. They work hard on dietary restrictions and will customize things for what the diner wants.
Breakfast Buffet Review:
Tampu has a compact breakfast buffet that hits it hard with variety and quality. You can also order several dishes including omelets, etc from a menu.
Extensive variety of fruits, cereals, yogurt, bakery items, gluten free and vegan bakery items, juices, mimosas, and much more. No American favorites like bacon, sausage, waffles and the like. Service was very good, considering only 2 tables were occupied! 8.5/10
Lunch Food Review:
Regular and gluten free bread is available. 8.5/10
Crema soup of the day (S/53) was not very creamy but served its purpose. 8/10
Soup of the day (S/53) was a fish soup. Good flavor and lots of fish. 8.5/10
Lecon Estilo Huarocondo (S/123) had ok pig, but a standout mushroom risotto. 8.5/10
Trucha en salsa curry Amazonica (S/123) was cooked in a mild curry with lots of tender fish. 8.5/10
Sorbet (S/11.72) was chichi mirada. How could we refuse this classic. 8.5/10
Dinner Food Review:
Langostino en Tempura (S/88) had lots of large shrimp in eggless tempura making this a big appetizer. 8.5/10
Alcachofa Y Palta Confitada (S/88) is a small artichoke and Candied avocado as a starter. Modern but works. 8/10
Ceviche de las Alturas (S/67) from the lunch menu was better than Isolina. Very fresh fish. 9/10
Carre de Cordero Andino (S/158) had 2 lamb chops cooked to perfect medium rare. Good flavor but the accompanying humus was odd. 8.5/10
Marget de la selva (S/140) has local duck that has a lot of flavor. 9/10
Mousse de Maracuya Y Cocona (S/53) was an odd dessert, almost like a Chinese grass jello. 7.5/10

Hiram Bingham Train
Why did we eat here? – We rode the posh Hiram Bingham Train from Machu Picchu Pueblo – Aguas Calientes to Cusco – Poroy. It is reminiscent of the Orient Express era. The train’s interior is beautiful. They give you champagne when you board and during the journey. Everything is included including full bar and live music. Lots of fun.
The rails here are not smooth, so expect a lot of choppiness.
Menu is limited – pick duck or trout. They ask for dietary restrictions and try to adjust but could not fully.

Carmen Bajo 120, Cusco 08003
Why did we eat here? – PACHAPAPA was recommended to us for their Cuy (Whole Guinea Pig)
This is conveniently located in the San Blas neighborhood. The courtyard is filled with umbrellas and gas warming lamps. Harp player provided live music. Make reservations online ahead of time!
Menu is wide ranging with lots of classic Peruvian dishes. Many can be adjusted for vegetarians.
The food was very good and prices very reasonable.
Service was only good. Long waits for things to happen like ordering.
Food Review:
Chicha Morada (S16) was home made version. Tastes a lot better than the bottle. 9/10
Cuy Al Horno (S/125) Whole Roasted Guinea pig takes 1 hour and comes with potatoes au gratin, side salad, and corn. Call ahead to lessen the wait. Menu is short and concise, not many options.
The food was local and just what we wanted. It is also not far from the Plaza Mayor
Service was friendly with a patient lady dealing with us tourists.
Food Review:

Why did we eat here? – Kion is a Chifa Peruvian Chinese restaurant run by the people who also run PACHAPAPA. It was one block from our hotel so we dropped in to see what the Chifa hype was all about. Decor is beautiful with a blend of modern and classic Asian elements. Book online.
We were jonesing for some Cantonese food and this was closest, but really not very!
Menu is wide ranging with dim sum, noodles, fried rice and a lot more. Prices are not cheap. Most dim sum items have egg.
The food was good, based on a limited item set.
Service was knowledgeable but food took a year to arrive.
Food Review:
Sparkling Ginge Lu (S/18) ginger, Lemongrass, lemon & Soda was nice and well balanced. The ice they used is filtered. 8.5/10

Why did we eat here? – We stumbled upon the Peruvian dish Pollo a la Brasa and found it one of the best chicken’s we’ve had. They brine the chicken in a mixture of herbs, garlic, and beer to give it flavor and moisture. Time to try again one!
Pollería La Granja was suggested by the waiter at our hotel but we did not have time to make it there. Several other folks recommended other spots that were closer, so we dined at Los Toldos Chicken. They are a couple blocks from the Plaza de Armas. Rated 4.0 on Google.
Menu is a lot bigger than most pollerias, loco salted, salads and more.
The food was very good but not as good as the polleria we went to in Urubamba.
Service was on the slow side. Long wait to order, etc.
Food Review:
1/4 Pollo a la brasa / papas Fritas (S/26 = USD$8) comes with access to their salad bar. The chicken had real crisp skin with lots of seasoning. The meat was tender but not super juicy. All in all decent Pollo a la brasa. 8.5/10
