Last Update: 12/31/2021
Foodie research and reviews from many visits to beautiful Maui with the last in 2021. We are based in San Francisco, so our base reference for dining is fairly high. This page has links to reviews of spots we heartily recommend, quick reviews of casual restaurants, and a list of research material we will use for future trips to paradise!
We removed several restaurants that did not survive the Pandemic. In late 2021, we found it hard to score reservations to dine inside, hence a lot of takeout.
Our goal was to find:
- Good eats at reasonable prices
- Primarily restaurants where locals go
- Local Hawaiian Food
We have no interest cuisine that is done better at home in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is challenging on an expensive island full of pricey tourist traps.
Formal Reviews of Recommended Restaurants
We like these spots enough to give them more detail.
- Honu – Lahaina
- Lahaina Grill – Lahaina – Popular but Not high on our list
- Star Noodle – Lahaina – Our favorite
- Lanai Restaurant Reviews
- Sansei – Kihei, Kapalua
- Ko – Wailea
- Monkeypod Kitchen – Wailea, Lahaina
- Merriman’s Kapalua
- Ka’ana Kitchen Andaz Maui Breakfast Buffet – Wailea

Short Reviews of Informal Restaurants
Below are short informal reviews for more casual spots and other restaurant we deem not deserving a full review. The latest ones are at the top.
Kalei’s Lunchbox – 12/2021
591 Haleakala Highway
Kahului, HI 96732
(808) 633-6345
Kalei’s is a food truck in the Lunch Truck food court across the street from Costco Gas. There are picnic tables, bathrooms, and lots of parking. A shrimp food truck, poke, and a dessert truck are here too. A nice place to go after you land, before you hit Costco, or before you fly home. Lots of people ordering their plate lunch style food.
The Like Poke? truck is also very good, but the wasabi poke is extremely spicy!
Poi by the pound used to be our go to spot, but alas they closed during the pandemic. RIP
Food Picks:
Island Roast Pork Mini ($10) with rice and greens. Huge portion for mini. Tender roast pork bathed in loco moco style brown gravy. 8/10
Hamburger Steak ($7 mini, +$1 rice & greens, +$1 mushroom/onions) was huge for a mini. Luscious brown gravy and lots of meat. 8/10
Chicken Teriyaki ($9 mini) Boneless chicken thighs marinated in our housemade teriyaki sauce was also well done. Nice teriyaki sauce and lots of chicken. 8.5/10

Geste is a food truck in the Lunch Truck food court across the street from Costco Gas. Highly rated at 4.5 stars on Yelp. A nice place to go after you land, before you hit Costco, or before you fly home. It is pretty much shrimp or hot dogs here. Lots of people ordering their favorite style food.

Fond – 12/2021
5095 Napilihau St Ste 115
Lahaina, HI 96761

Fond is an Asian fusion restaurant in the Kapalua area of West Maui. We were staying nearby and gave this place a try for lunch takeout. There are few restaurants up here. They had a 25% off off special for Lunch during our stay.
Food Picks:
Tuna Poke Bento ($16) Japanese Mayo, Scallions, Asian Slaw, Rice, Umami Egg. Very good poke, better dish than the Hamburger steak. 8.5/10
Hamburger Steak Bento ($14) Beef Gravy, Scallions, Asian Slaw, Rice, Umami Egg was not big. Decent quality but not exceptional. 7.5/10
Gravy Fries ($12) “poutine”, brown gravy, scallions were good but too salty. 7/10

We stayed at this hotel and received a resort credit to use a the restaurant. Without this credit, we would have avoided the place, but boy were we surprised. The food we had for lunch was pretty darn good. If you happen to be staying here or at a resort nearby, give it a try.

Da Kitchen – 4/2016
425 Koloa St., Suite 104
Kahului, HI 96732
808.871.7782
This location is very close to the OGG, making it a great place for a better and cheaper meal than the airport or plane. You will dine beside TSA and FBI employees.
Lunch for 4 came to an expensive $75! Quantities are massive. Food was slightly above average.
Picks:
Teriyaki Burger ($11.99) was pretty massive but decent. Price is too high! Order one of the next items..
Teriyaki Chicken and Beef Bowl ($15.75) is another large dish with lots of chicken and beef. Decent.
Hamburger Steak Plate ($13.95) was also sizeable. A theme here? Not as good as the one we had in Aston Kaanapali Shores. We had to ask for more gravy.
Pan Seared Mahi ($23.49) continues the massive portion size tradition. Very good quality fish and as usual, these folks know how to cook fish correctly.

Eskimo Candy – 4/2016
2665 Wai Wai Place
Kihei, HI 96753
(808) 879-5686
Eskimo Candy is a seafood market / Restaurant. Eat in, Take out, or cook at home. It is located near the rental car places, far from the main drag. Mostly locals and informed foodies. A nice change of pace from the usual expensive tourist joint.
Food Picks:
Davey Jones Fish-n-Chips – 4 Lightly battered pieces of fish, coleslaw & fries. Ono cost $8.95, Mahi $10.95. You cannot select the fish type at very many places. We selected mahi and found it pretty good. Fresh fish and really good when fried. Fries were fine.
Sauteed fish with rice and salad (Market price) was a pretty large piece of mahi mahi cooked just right. It did take a while to arrive.
Poke Bowl ($12.99) with 4 types of poke. Shoyu, wasabi, furikake and spicy tuna was also very fresh and hit the spot. The spicy was VERY spicy. Rice they use is not the best.
Kalbi plate lunch with fish and chips ($12.95) was a nice combination of surf and turf. Thick and very good kalbi ribs and 2 large pieces of fried fish.

Flatbread Company, Paia Maui – 8/2018
89 Hana Highway
Paia, HI 96779
808-579-8989
Why did we dine here? – Flatbread Company is a pizza restaurant in the hippies city of Paia, Maui. They focus on high quality ingredients, many of which are organic or local. We were doing the tourist thing here and visiting awesome natural food store Mana Foods (Great place for natural, vegan, gluten free items), so we stopped in for dinner. Menu is very limited – Salad, Flatbread.
Flatbreads tend to be more experimental, and chefs feel at liberty to play with ingredients. Pizza will always be a favorite staple, but it tends to be classic in terms of ingredients and concept: crust, sauce, cheese and toppings. Flatbread is supposed to not have yeast.
Cuisine – Pizza
Location – Paia Maui
Verdict – Flatbread Company specializes in one thing and does it with their own style. A decent place for a meal if you are here and want pizza. It did not meet our expectations. The Paia fish market across the way is also popular, with many more options. Perhaps a better well rounded spot.
Flatbread Company Food Picks:
Organic Salad ($8.50) with Kumu Farm’s mesclun and local organic sweet leaf lettuces, Maui organic green papaya from Ono Farms, organic carrots, toasted sesame seeds, organic sprouts from Kahunu Aina Farm, and homemade Maui pineapple vinaigrette was fresh and well made.
Mopsy’s Kalua Pork – Pepperoni & Mushroom 1/2 – 1/2 flatbread ($12 + 2.25 + 1.75) was an interesting flatbread. The pork side had pineapple so it was a little sweet. The Pepperoni side with tomato sauce was also a bit sweet. Crust was decent as was the pep and pork. Lots of Pepperoni, but not much pork. Bottom had a lot of black bits, a bit sloppy.
Pesto Gluten Free flatbread ($15.50 + $7) had a crust that was not as good as the regular one. Nice Homemade organic Maui basil, macadamia nut and garlic pesto.

A great place to pickup snacks and groceries. Costco is too far away from the tourist centers. Several kinds of Poke, that is actually very decent even though it is previously frozen.
Foodland Farms in Lahania is even more upscale. We got Poke to go here in August 2018. The quality is average, just not as good as Joey’s Kitchen.

When you are hungry near the Ritz Carlton Kapalua and do not want to pay $20 for a burger, eat at this ABC grocery store with a food section. A good place to buy some food to bring to the beach. (Yes we did this) Herb Roasted Prime Rib on Thursdays!
Picks:
Famous Honolua Burger ($9.99) with 100% all beef chuck steak burger, fresh Maui gold pineapple, cheddar cheese, bacon, tomato, green leaf lettuce, curly fries hit the spot. Price was reasonable and burger tasty.

also at:
Napili Plaza
5095 Napilihau St
Lahaina, HI 96761
808-214-5590
Why did we dine here? – Joey’s Kitchen is a small food court restaurant located downstairs in the Whaler’s Cove shopping center. Most of the restaurants here are expensive and touristy ($30-$40 entrees!), so it was nice to find something more down to earth. The chef worked at Roy’s for many years.
We have also eaten at their Napili Plaza location in 2021.
Cuisine – Hawaiian
Location – Lahaina, Maui
Verdict – Joey’s Kitchen is a nice reasonably priced spot for a quick meal. No need to pay the crazy prices upstairs.
Joey’s Kitchen Food Picks:
Huli-Huli Chicken Leg Quarter ($12) has a good sized chicken drumstick with salad and macaroni salad. Not huge but satisfying and cheaper than most.
Poke bowl ($12 – Market Price) was also very good. Better quality than the one we bought at Foodland foods in Lahaina.
Kalua Pork and cabbage ($16) with rice, lomi lomi tomato, mac salad was even better. Very well done pork with a blend of cabbage. 8/10

Why did we dine here? – Kihei Caffe is an informal breakfast/lunch spot in Kihei, Central Maui. We were nearby and wanted to find some local, reasonably priced restaurant and came here.
Cuisine – American
Location – Kihei, Maui
Verdict – Kihei Caffe served up some decent food at very good prices for Maui. Give it a try.
Kihei Caffe Food Picks:
Loco Moco – Two eggs, fresh ground beef patty, rice and brown gravy ($10.95 +$3 for fried rice) was pretty big and hit the mark. We opted to pay extra for the fried rice and found it well work the investment.
Kalua Pork Moco ($12.95) was another huge dish full of tender pork and really nice gravy. Yum.
Yogurt Parfait Bowl ($7.95) was a good sized portion of vanilla yogurt, muesli, strawberries and blueberries.

This small and suspect farmer’s market is open Monday – Friday, making it much easier to access. The person running it is super nice. He taught up how to tell what was ripe and how to eat it. Lots of local fruits, vegetables, bakery items, and much more.

This food truck was a dream, reasonably priced local food at good prices. Maui can be expensive, but food trucks like this work well. They use peanut oil in their fryer. They also do catering.
Picks:
Chicken Katsu ($14) with guava BBQ sauce was crispy and hit the spot
Seared Ahi ($14) with wasabi cream. This would cost double at a restaurant. Fresh fish cooked right.

Ono Kau Kau – 8/2018

Why did we dine here? – Ono Kau Kau is a simple restaurant just north of Kaanapali beach. We were driving by looking for a local plate lunch plate and stopped in.
Cuisine – Hawaiian
Location – Lahaina
Verdict – Ono Kau Kau had a warm owner who helped steer us in the right direction. The food was good and simple. Prices were reasonable. They also have Chinese food. The owners are Chinese and not Hawaiian, so some of the Chinese items may be decent.
Ono Kau Kau Food Picks:
Loco Moco mini ($8.95) while not as good as Kihei Caffe, this was almost home cooking.
Hamburger Steak mini ($8.95) – Hit the spot. Simple dish with gravy and nice rice.
Spam Musubi ($10.75 for 4) was better than L&L’s. Nice rice and gravy on it.

We wondered how this highly recommended natural foods grocery store could outdo Whole Foods or Rainbow Grocery in the San Francisco area. Mana Foods is a legendary natural foods grocery store in hippy Paia Maui. Lots of exotic items, gluten free, and vegan paradise. Wow, they stock a ton of stuff, much more than most. Their cooked foods and bakery items outdo Whole Foods, especially if you are looking for vegan options. Be sure to stop here on your drive to Hana. Get some ginger and ginger ale to ease the car trek. It about 15 minutes from the OGG airport.
Mana Foods has some of the best vegan and gluten free items you can find anywhere! We try to come here on every trip.
Mana Foods Food Picks:
Peanut Butter Cupcake Gluten Free and Vegan ($2.69) is the weakest of the 3 cupcakes. Still rich and satisfying.
Raspberry Chocolate Cupcake Gluten Free and Vegan ($2.69) is amazing. Almost tastes like a normal cupcake. Dark rich chocolate.
Gingerbread Lilikoi Cupcake Gluten Free ($2.69) is an interesting cupcake. A bit on the sour side, but we still like it.
Double Chocolate Chip Cookie Vegan and Spelt ($2.39) is large and very dark.
Chocolate Chip Macadamia Nut Cookie Vegan and Spelt ($2.39) is a great cookie. Large and filled with chips.
