Why did we dine here? – avec is a rustic mediterranean shared plate restaurant in Chicago. Originally conceived as a wine bar, the kitchen’s offerings quickly steered the space in another direction. Wine, however, remains at avec’s core.
The One off restaurant group runs several of Chicago’s best including Blackbird, Nico, and Publican.

We walked in early and sat at the communal table. The one downside is that this restaurant is VERY loud. Wood walls and ceiling box the sound in.

Location – Chicago, West Loop
Verdict – avec surprised us with really good food. With 4.5 stars on Yelp, we expected good stuff and got it. Service was good with a server that knew her stuff and no need to hail waitstaff. Foodies should definitely put it on your short list.

Mojito ($13) was smooth and strong.
chicken liver crostini with rhubarb mustard and fresh mint ($14) is definitely a must get. Simply smooth liver with tart/sweet rhubarb and excellent grilled country bread. The server said there was a fan club attached to this dish. We are part of it.
chorizo stuffed medjool dates ($17) with bacon and piquillo pepper-tomato sauce is also a signature dish and must order. A little Sweet and Savory, the 4 large pieces achieve a nice balance.
roast butcher’s steak with charred leeks, black garlic romesco and spanish peanuts ($18) was also recommended and hit the mark. Tender cuts of meat cooked to a nice medium rare.
charred eggplant with pickled cherries, zhoug, chickpea hummus and heart baked pita ($12) had fantastic pita and a smooth hummus. Very interesting flavors with the cherries and eggplant.
peach sorbet ($4) had 2 scoops of housemade sorbet. Neutral in flavor and not too sweet.
