Reviewer: Foodnut.com Chicago, IL |
Foodie research and reviews from our first visit to Chicago in the Summer of 2018. We are based in San Francisco, so our base reference for dining is fairly high. This page has links to reviews of spots we heartily recommend, quick reviews of casual restaurants, and a list of research material we will use for future trips to the Windy City.
Our goal was to find:
- Good eats at reasonable prices
- Find restaurants where locals go
- Local Food
Formal Reviews of Recommended Restaurants
Short Reviews of Informal Restaurants
Below are short informal reviews for more casual spots and other restaurant we deem not deserving a full review.
Eataly, Chicago
7/29/18
Why did we dine here? – Eataly, Chicago is part of Mario Batali’s Empire. We have been to the one in New York City, so we passed by the one in Chicago and decided on a quick lunch there.
This 2 story homage to all things food and Italian has several restaurants (Pizza/Pasta, Roman Pizza, Sandwiches, etc) along with lots of sections.
Cuisine – Italian
Location – Chicago Miracle Mile
Verdict – Eataly is a nice place to for food fans to visit. Clean, modern, and chock full of good stuff.
They also sell food (meats, pasta, cheese, etc) for people to cook at home.
Eataly Food Picks:
Prime Rib Panini ($14.80) was a very meaty sandwich, served on their house made bread. Good stuff, though expensive.
Contorni ($2.80) – Roast Potatoes was also very good.
Arugula Salad ($5.35) 8oz was fresh and hit the spot. Nice raspberry vinaigrette.

Stan’s Donuts & Coffee, Chicago
7/29/18
Why did we dine here? – Stan’s Donuts & Coffee is one of Chicago’s popular donut chains. They started out in Los Angeles back in 1963.
Locations are all over Chicagoland.
Verdict – Stan’s Donuts & Coffee
Stan’s Donuts & Coffee Food Picks:
Vegan Cinnamon donut ($2.75) was good sized and coated with either cinnamon or sugar. The donut was thick and dense but there was too little sweetness on the coating.
They do not change this option out, resulting in a pretty boring vegan selection.

Firecakes, Chicago
7/29/18
Why did we dine here? – Firecakes is a small donut shop in Chicago. Or really more of a donut shop with a window.
Verdict – Firecakes is not a good place to go for vegan or gluten free donuts.
Stan’s Donuts & Coffee Food Picks:
Vegan and Gluten free double chocolate donut ($3.75) was small sized donut. The texture was really weird and it melted fast in the heat.

Minghin Cuisine, Chicago 7/31/18
Why did we dine here? – Minghin Cuisine is a Cantonese Chinese restaurant with 4 locations in the Chicago area. We ate here because we were hankering for some dim sum and found a location a couple blocks from our hotel on Chicago’s Loop. Michelin Bib Gourmand.
This restaurant has nice decor and clearly serves nearby office workers. The service is kicked up a notch to handle this clientele. Dim Sum Menu for lunch is abbreviated compared to most spots.
Cuisine – Chinese
Location – Chicago Loop
Verdict – Minghin Cuisine serves up decent Chinese Dim Sum. Prices and quality run second to what we have in the San Francisco area. The food was not the best but provided a nice change from all the deep dish and American food.
Minghin Cuisine Food Picks:
Shrimp Dumplings or Har Gow ($4.95 for 4) were thin skinned with lots of small shrimp inside. Better than expected.
Deep fried Sesame Balls ($3.65) had 3 medium sized ones filled with golden brown filling. Decent but not exceptional.
Steamed BBQ Pork buns ($4.55) had 3 larger size ones. The bottom were a bit damp, but the bao’s interior was full of chopped up pork.
Shrimp Rice Crepe or Rice Noodle roll ($4.95) was decent albeit a little bland. More soy sauce was needed.
Pea shoots in Broth ($14.95) was a good dish full of pea shoots bathed in a light broth. Good quantity and a fair price.

Portillo’s, Chicago
8/1/18
Why did we dine here? – Portillo’s, established 1963, is a famous place for Chicago style hot dogs. They also have beef sandwiches, pasta, ribs and more. It is the first place most mention when asked about hot dogs. The restaurant has several counters were you can order different types of food. After ordering you wait for your number to be called. This loud place was packed with tourists.
Cuisine – American
Location – Chicago River North
Verdict – Portillo’s hot dog was average and did not wow us. Seems like a typical touristy bucket list items. There must be better places..
Portillo’s Food Picks:
Hot Dog ($3.09) was not big, but had a nice firm casing and decent flavor. Tomatoes, a long pickle, relish, onions on a steamed poppy seed bun. No ketchup (They will laugh at you if you ask), but you can use a dispenser to add some. The dog was not the most beautiful one.
Fries ($2.09) were crinkle style and decent.

Chi Cafe, Chicago
8/2/18
Why did we dine here? – Chi Cafe is a casual Chinese restaurant in Chicago’s Chinatown. It is located in the Chinatown Square strip mall. We were visiting this small Chinatown and decided to get some lunch in this area.
Cuisine – Chinese Cantonese
Location – Chicago Chinatown
Verdict – Chi Cafe has reasonably priced Chinese food with decent quality. The menu is pretty wide ranging.
Chi Cafe Food Picks:
Ginger Chicken ($10.95 half) had good flavor and ample quantities. Lots of bones, so beware.
Choy sum vegetables in garlic ($8.25) were also decent. Good fresh vegetables cooked just right.
HK Milk Tea Hot ($1.75) comes with no sugar. A decent version. FYI: Lots of boba tea shops outside.

McDonald’s Global Menu Restaurant West Loop, Chicago
8/2/18
Why did we dine here? – McDonald’s West Loop is a special branch of the chain. It is located next door to their New Chicago Headquarters and Hamburger University management training office. We were walking through the neighborhood after having eaten at Two and stumbled upon this. It opened in April 2018.
This is one of the only McDonald’s to serve a regular menu along with some select items from International locations that rotate through the year. Full time baristas. They also have the touch screen computerized self ordering system we have used in Hong Kong.
Some special items we encountered and the country:
France: Blue Cheese and Bacon Burger ($6.29)
Australia: Spicy Buffalo Chicken Grilled ($6.29)
Canada: Keep Calm, Caesar on Salad ($6.99)
Netherlands: Sausage McMuffin TS ($3.89)
Brazilian: Twist Cone
Brazil: Top Sundae ($2.49)
Canada: I’m Greeking Out salad ($6.99)
Canada Side Salad ($3)
Hong Kong: Wasabi French Fries ($3.29)
Italy: Baci McFlurry ($2.29)
It is also a very modern clean location that has table service like the McDonald’s Next in Hong Kong. Chargers are in the tables inside.
Cuisine – American
Location – Chicago West Loop
Verdict – McDonald’s
McDonald’s Food Picks:
Baci McFlurry ($2.29) from Brazil with Chocolate Soft serve, chopped hazelnuts, and added Whipped Cream and nuts was more of a sundae than a McFlurry. It was pretty good actually!

Two, Chicago
8/2/18
Why did we dine here? – Two is a highly (4.5 stars on Yelp) restaurant that a friend suggested we eat at. They have a 50% off burger special on Thursdays, 50% off drafts on Tuesday. This feels like a casual local spot for a drink and some quick bite. Two was not very crowded and reservations were readily available. We sense that the Randolph street area has superseded this area.
Cuisine – American
Location – Chicago Noble Square
Verdict – Two has decent food at reasonable prices. Nothings stupendous, but worth trying. This spot does not deserve 4.5 stars, perhaps 4, it is not super special. They are Michelin Bib Gourmand rated.
TWO’s ever-changing menu has a true Midwestern heart and dishes are presented with a playful, urban touch. The greatest menu influences are butchers, yet farmers, fishermen and foragers also play an important role.
Two Food Picks:
Langley’s, sparkling wine, fresh lemon juice, Green tea simple, and a hibiscus tea & Radler ice cube ($12) is a serious drink, not too foo foo. Nice and balanced.
Roasted broccoli, burrata cheese, Calabrian chilies, Jamon Iberico ($13) is well done with lots of broccoli and not spicy from the chilies. Just a little bit of Jamon.
Grilled Octopus, herb dressing, spicy sweet corn chow chow, and romaine ($19) is done well. Very tender and a good sized portion. The corn is a bit too spicy.
Double cheeseburger, bacon jam, butterkase cheese, mustard aioli, potato bun, pickles, fries ($15, $7.50 on Thursday) was huge with some really nice meat. The fries were a bit salty though. A steal on Thursdays.
Almond cake, rhubarb mascarpone, black raspberries, rhubarb sorbet ($8) was really good although there was not a lot of it. There was more of the other items. Great price.

Little Goat Diner, Chicago
8/3/18
Why did we dine here? – Little Goat Diner is a popular and top (4 star) Yelp rated restaurant in Chicago’s ritz West Loop – Fulton Market district. A sister restaurant to the hard to get in Girl & the Goat across the street. Funny thing is, we meant to eat there, not here! Randolph street if full of fancy new restaurants and the new McDonalds headquarters. Stephanie Izard serves up innovative New American diner cuisine with all day breakfast and lunch.
Cuisine – New American
Location – Chicago West Loop
Verdict – Little Goat Diner impressed us with kicking up a diner like spot with everything from Chicken Pot Pie to Korean Chop Chae.
Little Goat Diner Food Picks:
The chickpea salad ($14) kale. chopped veggies. mont amore cheese. tzatziki. chee vinaigrette was a fancy salad dressed heavily.
Machos Nachos ($15) house masa chips. braised pork. beans. pickled peppers. cheddar. sour cream. avocado was huge and filling. Good enough for 2-3 people. Very nice house made chips with a ton of chips.
Not Chinese Broccoli ($8) szechuan vinaigrette. sesame. peanuts was an inventive veggie side dish with lots of accents.

The Dearborn, Chicago
8/4/18
Why did we dine here? – The Dearborn is a New American urban american tavern in downtown Chicago’s touristy Loop area. It is located downstairs from the Block 34 shopping mall. We happened to be nearby and gave it a try. (Rated 4.5 on Yelp)
Sisters Amy and Clodagh Lawless combine their 40-plus years of hospitality experience—both here in Chicago and in their native Ireland—to create a restaurant that unites their passion for heartfelt service, a welcoming ambiance and classically rooted food that isn’t afraid to take culinary risks.
Dearborn was a nice surprise, with its elevated classic American cuisine. The service and the food were above average.
Cuisine – New American
Location – Chicago Loop
Verdict – The Dearborn is a solid bet for a meal when you are in Downtown Chicago. The Sunday brunch items are inventive and liberal portion wise. They take standard dishes and push them to a new level.
The Dearborn Food Picks:
Pastrami Hash and eggs ($18) twice cooked sofrito potatoes, butcher & larder pastrami, brussels sprouts, carrots, molten gruyère cheese, sunnyside-up eggs – sounds like a mundane dish, but they chop up the potatoes, pastrami and more and pan fry them together.
Cinnamon Roll French Toast ($14) housemade cinnamon swirl brioche, cinnamon chips, fresh citrus, chantilly, maple syrup – looked like a massive cinnamon roll. A huge round chunk of french toast topped with whipped cream. Stellar maple syrup on the side.
Market Salad ($12) hand-selected local finds from market today – takes greens that are currently in season, mixes it up with some fruit, and turns it into a fine little salad. Great if you are looking for something light.
Bangers ($6) or Breakfast Sausage side order. We wanted some meat with the salad, so why not have some bangers instead of chicken. 3 large quality links with strong meaty flavors. Add some maple syrup and you have a lot of fun.

Service – Tortas Frontera is slow, with food taking a while to get prepared.

Is this restaurant worth a 5 minute drive? Yes. 30 minute? No. 1 Hour? No.
Tortas Frontera Signature Dishes – Tortas

Tortas Frontera Food Picks:
Torta Cochinita ($12.50) achiote + citrus, braised pork, pickled red onions, black beans,
side of roasted habanero salsa was really good. Quality meat with good bread that was grilled just right.
Chipotle Chicken Torta ($11.50 artisan Jack cheese, poblano rajas, chipotle, black beans,
cilantro crema, avocado, wild arugula was also good. For those who are gluten free, they can do it over a bed of greens.

Nha Hang Viet Nam, Chicago
7/28/18
Why did we dine here? – Nha Hang Viet Nam is a family run Vietnamese restaurant in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. The area is slowly getting modernized with new spots popping up and a big Asia on Argle Street banner plastered on the train crossing.
Insider Tip – Order Carefully
Cuisine – Vietnamese
Location – Chicago Uptown
Opened – 2011
Service – Nha Hang Viet Nam had fair service with just 2 people serving the entire place. About what we expected.
Verdict – Nha Hang Viet Nam had better pho that we suspected, making it a good bet if you are hankering for some.
Is this restaurant worth a 5 minute drive? Yes. 30 minute? No. 1 Hour? No.
Nha Hang Viet Nam Signature Dishes – Pho
Nha Hang Viet Nam’s Menu is very extensive but there were some of dishes they were not serving that day. Che was not available.
Nha Hang Viet Nam Food Picks:
Pho Tai ($8.95) Sliced medium-rare beef noodle soup had a good broth and noodles. They even supplied dragon coriander with the mix-ins. This surprised us as only the top places in California do this.
Stir fried Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce ($10.95) was a messy mound of greens. Cooked just fine but heavily sauced.
Mango Smoothie ($4.95) was well made but took a long time to arrive.
