Mamahuhu is Mister Jiu’s casual restaurant in the Inner Richmond district of San Francisco. You order at the counter and they bring the food to you.
They’ve opened more locations including one in Mill Valley. Their motto: “We envision a future in which delicious, affordable, sustainably-sourced food is the norm and Chinese-American cuisine plays a central role.”
We are big Chinese food fans so we had to try it. Elevated Chinese cuisine is evident here, from no starched out sauces to fresh ingredients.
We’ve been back several times. New items have been added and some dishes have been removed. Mamahuhu also does catering and sell frozeen dumplings.
Safety Pluses – Online menu, Delivery services available, online ordering.
Food Picks:
Sweet & Sour Chicken with Jasmine Rice and Wok’d Veg rice plate ($15.50) Crisp chicken with non-egg batter. Strong robust sauce, Crisp textured chicken, Ample quantity. Lots of freshly cooked/al dente vegetables on a bed of rice. Better than expected. We look forward to trying other items. This isnot the red dye #2 version most Chinese restaurant have! 9.5/10
You can just get the entree sized chicken only, without rice or veggies for $18. Add white rice for $2.
Broccoli & Mushrooms ($17) shiitake, broccoli, cauliflower, dino kale, mushroom gravy (vegan) is a nice balanced dish of vegetables. No heavy corn starch here. Broccoli was still crispy aand not mushy. Not gluten free because of soy sauce. 9.5/10
Sweet & Sour Cauliflower ($15.50 Vegan – Gluten Free) rice plate is similar to the Sweet and Sour chicken version even down to the feel of the crisp bite. You finally taste the cauliflower towards the end. On our summer 2024 visit they put too much sauce on, making it too sour and sweet. Be sure to ask for as little sauce as possible. 7.5/10
Broccoli & Beef ($18) black peppered grass-fed sirloin, organic broccoli + Cauliflower + dino kale take the classic up a couple notches. High qualify beef (wish there was more) that isn’t covered with egg wash. Lots of Broccoli and kale. 9/10
Mapo Tofu with Pork ($17) soft Wo Chong tofu, ground Creekstone pork, doubanjiang (spicy fermented bean paste), Sichuan peppercorn is very spicy, so beware! Nicely done though. 8/10
Removed from menu: Kung Pao Chicken ($16) wok’d chicken thigh, pizzazzy mala peanuts, chili, celery is pretty spicy. A good rendition with the varied textures. 8.5/10
Mala YOLO Cucumber ($5) spicy all over – hit the mark. Don’t wait too long to eat it or else it will get watery. 8/10
Blood Orange Chrysanthemum tea ($7) was a nice slightly sweet tea drink. Perfect evening drink because there is no caffeine! 8.5/10
Snow Jasmine Tea Soda ($5) is not too sweet and has a nice tea tone. 8/10
