The must go to food market in Madrid!
- Be sure to read Madrid Restaurant Reviews
Everyone goes to popular Mercado de San Miguel. Our last visit was about 5 years ago and it has definitely improved since. Each stall specializes in one category, so there is no overlap or competition with other stalls. Paella, Jamon, Olives, Fruits, Tapas, Pastries, Wine, Empanadas and more are all represented. Prices are higher than outside eateries, but do come hungry when you visit.
We went around 9pm and the place was Packed and definitely happening.
Mercado de San Miguel is the food market in Central Madrid, right off the touristy Plaza Mayor. This is a must visit spot for all folks vacationing here. Prices of course are not cheap.
Pro Tip: Be sure to visit the smaller less touristy Mercado’s in Madrid like the Mercado Anton Martin.
The market is not very large and focuses on tourists with lots of food that is ready to eat. After walking around, we found it different than La Boqueria of Barcelona. There are essential only 1 of each type of store. This is logical because the place is not very big. Don’t speak Spanish, no worries, just point and tap your credit card.
