New York City Restaurant Reviews

Reviewer: Foodnut.com

Statue of Liberty June 2016 (5)

Here is a compilation of more casual restaurants, snack places we visited during our June 2016 New York City trip. Our goal was to find good eats at reasonable prices, primarily restaurants where locals go. We have no interest sampling cuisine that is done better at home in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is challenging on an expensive ‘island’, full of pricey tourist traps.

Our Trip includes visits to Brooklyn, Flushing.

Exploring Chelsea market led us to this local favorite. Stick to the pastries, not the bread. BTW Chelsea market was a bit disappointing compared to Hudson Eats and our home San Francisco Ferry Building Marketplace.

Food Picks:
Toy’s Organic Wheat Baguette ($2.60) definitely not in the same league as Tartine Bakery of San Francisco.

A Joe and Lidia Bastianich popular restaurant. We attempted to dine in a non touristy restaurant before a Broadway show and our research brought us here. Alas most of the folks here seemed to be tourists. Food was decent with large portions, but nothing special.

Becco’s eat as much as you want from three daily pasta dishes for $24.95 is a pre-show steal though. It even includes Insalata Caesar Salad or Antipasto Misto.

Try Ramen at Totto Ramen for something less touristy.

Food Picks:
Sinfonia Di Paste ($24.95) with starter and 3 pastas is super value. Gnocchi, Fusili, and Spaghetti.

Pesce Spada ($26) 2 good sized filets

Short Ribs ($40) is cooked like veal osso bucco, Massively huge and very tender.

We stayed in Tribeca and looked for a casual Italian restaurant and found this place. A cozy neighborhood joint with decent food in large quantities and reasonable prices. Service was a big lax.

Straccetti Manzo ($15) had a ton of meat and cheese.

Taglia Meatballs ($18) had several HUGE meatballs.

Risotto Funghi ($19) also huge, very balanced.

A legendary pizza joint with another location in Brooklyn. We were ready to try some NY style pizza cooked in a coal brick oven and this was one stop. Cash only.

Food Picks:
Burrata ($14) was very good. Smooth, silky cheese. Crude cherry tomatoes.

Large Pizza ($16) half regular pizza, half white pizza – Sausage, Pepperoni, Mushroom – Crisp crust, very thin, TONS of ingredients. The white part was less acidic and more cheesy.

After seeing a couple pictures of their beautiful cakes, we just had to come here. Yes they are as good as they look. We tried one that was shipped to California ($80 for 6 inch including shipping), and it was still pretty darn good! This location is very convenient for tourists and is housed in a Food Hall. Beware that the Upper East Side location is pretty small.  You can even get them Fed Ex’d to you!

A 2 Michelin star Italian restaurant focusing on seafood. We had high hopes for this restaurant but left wonder what went wrong. Great value 2 course business lunch at $52. Glad we did not have to pay more for dinner. Service fell through the floor during one period with the pacing way off. (Overloaded?) This is definitely a power lunch place full of suits.

A very popular Shanghai dumpling restaurant in Flushing. We had to wait about 30 minutes for a table. The soup dumplings are good but not as good as Din Tai Fung. Cash only, but this place is cheap.

4 stars on Yelp brought us by this popular place. The puddings are very rich and add to that, toppings! Ask to sample the coast to coast cheesecake pudding. You can even order online and get Fedex delivery. No vegan options.
