Where does a San Francisco Foodie eat in New York? Follow our journey and learn from our experiences over several trips.
Here is a compilation of more casual restaurants, snack places we visited during our 2016, 2017, 2019, 2023-2024 New York City trips. Our goal was to find good eats at reasonable prices, primarily restaurants where locals go. We have no interest sampling cuisine that is done better at home in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is challenging on an expensive ‘island’, full of pricey tourist traps.
Our Trip includes visits to Brooklyn, Flushing.

Buddakan
75 9th Ave
New York, NY 10011

Buddakan is an Asian restaurant next to Chelsea Market in NYC. We were staying at a hotel nearby and ate here mainly because they stayed opened late until 11 PM.
The decor inside is beautiful, a multilevel dining experience with modern and classic Asian elements. You will only find restaurants like this in major large cities like New York, London, etc. With the surrounding, so beautiful, we did not expect the food to be great.
Boy, did we misjudge this restaurant, the food was very good making this an easy recommendation if you’re nearby.
Service was solid with a well trained waitress.
Food Review:
REJUVENATION cocktail ($20) ketel one, chinola mango, thai basil, lemon is an icy cold cocktail with a nice balance of sweetness. 8.5/10
Pork Buns ($21) charred pork belly, spicy shallots, napa cabbage had 3 good sized buns with tender pork belly filling. No overwhelming sauce. 8.5/10
Short Rib and Scallion Pancake ($20) asian pear, ginger was pretty popular on Yelp. Deep savory flavored rib on a small cut up pancake. 9/10
Dungeness Crab Sticky Rice ($30) x.o. sauce, Chinese broccoli hit the spot for a glutinous rice dish. Not overly meaty, cooked just right. 9/10
Tai Shan Cauliflower ($18) sweet chili sauce, medjool dates, cashew was also a very well done dish. Perfect for vegetarians. Good portion size. 9.5/10

Obao is an Thai/Vietnamese Noodle and BBQ restaurant with a Hell’s Kitchen location in near the NYC Theater district. We wanted a quick solid lunch before we walked one block to see Stereophonic. It’s hard to find non-tourist traps in this area.
The food and pricing was good, actually better than expected. Not foodie heaven but reasonable enough.
Service was solid with an attentive waiter.
Food Review:

Olio e Piu is a popular Italian restaurant in NYC’s Greenwich Village serving classic Italian dishes including pasta and pizza. Highly rated at 4.5 stars on Yelp. They also have locations in DC and Chicago.
This restaurant was loud and busy, younger crowd with lots of 30 somethings eating. The food was as expected, with the pasta outshining the pizza.
Service was very with an attentive waiter that helped us order, refill, etc.
Food Review:
FRUTTI DI BOSCO ($14) Strawberries, Cranberries, Lemon, Club Soda was a fruity cocktail with a tart flavor. 7.5/10
FINOCCHIO E PERE ($19) Romaine, arugula, chicory, shaved fennel, confit pears, shaved Pecorino, pickled cranberries, toasted almonds, champagne vinegar dressing was a good sized dessert with a sweet flavor profile. 8/10
SPAGHETTI CARBONARA ($28) Guanciale, black pepper, egg*, Parmigiano, chili oil is a signature dish and really hits the spot. Al dente pasta and a nice runny egg. 9/10
Trifle al Pesto or Penne with Pesto ($29) was vegan and gluten free. Nice al dente eggless pasta made this better than most. 8/10
Abbodante pizza ($26) with sausage and bell peppers was very Neapolitan. Soft center, char spots, very good cheese and sausage but too little of it. 8/10

Tatiana is a run by Top Chef 13 participant and James Beard Award-winning chef Kwame Onwauchi. He’s also worked at Per Se and Eleven Madison Park. “The #1 Restaurant in New York City,” by the New York Times,
Reservations at this hot spot are hard. We had to line up 45 minutes early to get in. Walk-ins fit in the bar or are seated outside.
This Afro-Carribean food crosses many genres and is perfect for pre-theater dining at this Lincoln Center location.
Service started out well but faded after the food arrived. Clearly not enough servers.
The food here is bold and flavorful with lots of strong elements. Lots of sweet, spicy and sour combinations. The big plates were a lot better than the small ones. Definitely come here hungry and with several friends!
Food Review
Karaoke Honeymoon cocktail ($18) was very ginger spicy but hit the spot. 8.5/10
Mango Squash Piri Piri Salad ($26) Persian Cucumber, Seasonal Grapes, Crispy Quinoa was on the sour side. Lots of cubed pieces that are disjointed. 7/10
Black Bean Hummus ($26) Berbere Spiced Lamb, Sweet Pickled Sultana, M’semen had hummus with a chopped lamb in the middle. You put the combo on scallion pancake like items. 7/10
Take-out mushrooms ($48) Scallion Pancake, Plum Sauce, Pickled Ginger is also a large dish. Great for vegetarians. Chinese elements help turn this beautiful dish into a sophisticated combinations of flavors. 8.5/10
Braised Oxtails ($58) Rice & Peas, Thumbelina Carrot, Chayote Squash have about 5 large pieces in a caramelized sauce that was sweet and spicy. Tender meat and a nice rice side. 9/10
Mom Dukes Shrimp ($54) Head-on Shrimp, Creole Butter, Brioche are 3 huge tiger prawns partially de-shelled. Strong flavors in the sauce including a sour one. Very fresh prawns. Brioche are okay. 8.5/10

Food Review
Gotham Smash Single ($9) eggless bun, a nostalgic smash burger with grilled onions, melted american cheese, housemade pickles, jalapenos, club sauce, ketchup, mustard is a solid burger freshly made. Better than In and Out on the West Coast. 8/10

Potluck Club

Potluck Club is a stylish Cantonese Chinese – American restaurant in NYC’s Chinatown. It has a fancy interior that draws from Chinese-American culture including Bruce Lee films. The restaurant is busy, so reserve ahead or come early. Good to see mostly non-asians at this hot spot. It was interesting to see them use regular pans on convection cooktops instead of woks.
The food was very good with several dishes that stood out. No dessert. Four Kings in San Francisco reminds us of this place, but has less fusion elements.
Service was friendly and very helpful.
Food Review
The Landlady ($15) is a nice fruity mocktail. 8.5/10
Ribena Spritz cocktail ($15) has hidden alcohol and is on the sweet side. 8/10
Oyster Mushroom Rice Rolls with steak ($31) asparagus, garlic chives was really well done. Quality beef with that Chinese steak flavor, and lots of tender rice rolls. 9.5/10
Snow Pea Shoots ($19) roasted garlic-oyster sauce was on the healthier side with lots of tender pea shoots. 8/10
Salt & Pepper Chicken with Scallion Biscuits ($25) with pickled jalapeño, chili-plum jam is an homage to Southern fried chicken with Chinese elements. Eggless batter, this was a lightly dusted chicken with biscuits possessing slight scallion flavor. 8.5/10

Hainan Jones is a stall in the Urban Hawker Singaporean food hall near Times Square in New York City. A friend had eaten here and told us to give it a try. We’re big fans of Chicken Rice and loved it in Singapore. We could never find a decent version in San Francisco Area.
This is a cool food hall with lots of different stalls. Everything from Indian food to desserts to Coffee/Tea and a lot more. Perfect spot before or after a Broadway show. We’ve eaten and gotten ripped off at so many expensive touristy spots nearby. Also on Uber eats.
Food Review:
Signature Poached Chicken Set ($19) with Chicken, Rice, Veggies, and Soup. Very nice tender chicken and flavorful rice. Veggies had fried shallots on top. Soup was fine, not great. Haven’t had one this good since our last trip to Singapore. 9.5/10

A Joe and Lidia Bastianich popular restaurant. We attempted to dine in a non touristy restaurant before a Broadway show and our research brought us here. Alas most of the folks here seemed to be tourists. Food was decent with large portions, but nothing special.
Becco’s eat as much as you want from three daily pasta dishes for $24.95 is a pre-show steal though. It even includes Insalata Caesar Salad or Antipasto Misto.
Try Ramen at Totto Ramen for something less touristy.

Made in New York Pizza – June 2023
421 Amsterdam Avenue
New York, NY 10024
(646) 484-6200
Upper West Side. 2 other locations in NYC.
A highly rated 4.5 Yelp stars pizza joint near the American Museum of Natural History. We were ready to try some NY style pizza and this was one stop. They have lots of pre-made pies and slices and warm them up when you order. A quick meal that really satisfies.
Food Review:
Pepperoni Slice ($4.75) was huge and proved to have a nice crust and lots of grease! The edge was a bid doughy. Lots of pep. 8.5/10
Grandma Slice ($4.75) is a square pizza with a really crisp crust and lots of cheesy. 9/10

Marea – 6/2016
240 Central Park S

Midtown West
(212) 582-5100
A 2 Michelin star Italian restaurant focusing on seafood. We had high hopes for this restaurant but left wonder what went wrong. Great value 2 course business lunch at $52. Glad we did not have to pay more for dinner. Service fell through the floor during one period with the pacing way off. (Overloaded?) This is definitely a power lunch place full of suits.
Food Picks:
3 kinds of bread
Zuppa – Chilled corn Soup
Tonno – bigeye Tuna
Polipo – grilled octopus
Funghi – Risotto
Fusilli – octopus, bone marrow
Trompetti – Bolognese ragu
Pre dessert: Profiteroles

An outpost of a NYC BBQ local chain. This location is in Hudson Eats, a beautiful high end food court in the Brookfield Place building. A must visit place if you are across the street at the 9/11 Memorial, One World Trade, or Battery Park – Statue of Liberty Cruise. Beware that the place has long lines during weekday lunchtime.

Momofuku SSAM Bar – 7/2017
207 Second Avenue

New York, NY 10003
East Village
212-254-3500
Popular NYC Asian fusion eatery from star chef David Chang. We’ve been to his nearby East Village Noodle bar, so we had to try this restaurant next. Another inventive spot in his empire.
This is a great restaurant to come with a larger group and share the various dishes. Ask if they have items not listed on the menu as it changes Daily. Momofuku had their pork buns and rice cakes available during our visit. You can order the duck ssam ahead of time.
Note that Milk Bar is across the street, so you can get your dessert fix there instead.
Picks:
½ Dozen Oysters – kombu mignonette ($21) was pretty simple but clean and fresh.
Hokkaido Uni over Rice – furikake, shiso ($28) was expensive but awesome. Could have used a double order of this rich sea urchin goodness.
Grilled Flatiron – charred market greens, steak sauce ($31) another good dish of pre cut quality meat cooked to a medium rare, with a nice side of greens. Could have used some starch like rice with this dish. We had to ask for some buns.
Chili Pork Ribs – sesame, scallion ($28) had a slow burn heat to them. Char siu flavor with fall off the bone tenderness. Pretty meaty dish.
Chinese Long Beans – chili, garlic, shallot ($11) were a bit unexpected. Chopped up and in a vinegary sauce, this had a lots of flavor.
Plain Bun ($2) is offered if you do not have enough starch.

Nan Xiang Dumpling House – 6/2016
38-12 Prince St
Flushing, NY 11354

Flushing
A very popular Shanghai dumpling restaurant in Flushing. We had to wait about 30 minutes for a table. The soup dumplings are good but not as good as Din Tai Fung. Cash only, but this place is cheap.
If you are into Chinese street food, do not miss the basement of the New World Mall – Yelp Page
Food Picks:
Soy Milk ($1.50)
Yau Tiu ($1.50)
Pork Dumplings ($5.95) were 6 super sized ones with lots of soup. Good flavor but more meat than the real deal. A big to Americanized.

Prince Street Pizza – 7/2017

A hole in the wall pizza joint in the middle of Nolita. This was a couple blocks from our hotel and a great spot for a which lunch. Typical menu with several pizzas on the counter to choose from that are heated up when you order. The place itself is tiny, with standing counter to slurp down the goodness. Get your pizza to go an eat somewhere else. You can nicely ask for extra crispy pizza.
Picks:
Margherita slice ($4.30) was surprisingly great. Crispy crust, really good cheese. I question how authentic this is, but we highly recommend it.
Pepperoni thick crust Soho Square ($3.95) was a bit on the soft side. Very good n greasy pep. Probably should have gotten this one more crispy.

4 stars on Yelp brought us by this popular place. The puddings are very rich and add to that, toppings! Ask to sample the coast to coast cheesecake pudding. You can even order online and get Fedex delivery. No vegan options.
