We are lovers of high end lavish buffets and nowhere are they more present than in Hong Kong. Not trying to get our money’s worth, we like trying all sorts of different food, items we would never order!
We’ve been to many top ones of the years. Conrad was our favorite for a long time but only does a Sunday brunch buffet. Also consider The Market buffet. This time we tried the Verandah dinner buffet on a Saturday night. They have buffets at breakfast, lunch and dinner, with more expensive prices on the weekend and holidays. Reservations are a must, they filled up about a week in advance.
At lunch and dinnertime, the wide variety of hot and cold appetisers, seafood, salads, entrées, and desserts reflects cuisines from all over the world – including Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
Buffet Lunch (Monday to Friday) costs Adult HK$750, Children (Age 3-11) HK$630
Buffet Lunch (Saturday) Adult HK$850, Children (Age 3-11) HK$700
Buffet Lunch (Sunday & Public Holiday) Adult HK$1,150, Children (Age 3-11) HK$900
Buffet Dinner Adult HK$1,150, Children (Age 3-11) HK$900
All Prices add 10% service charge. Tea and coffee are included. Optional beverage package add-ons are available.
The Peninsula is an old school hotel with classic marble decor, oozing old world elegance. The Verandah has dining rooms on both ends of the main food area, which is pretty compact compared to other nearby buffets. The main room over looks the Hong Kong harbor. We visited on Mother’s Day weekend and found the place packed with fellow buffet enthusiasts, familes and more. Clearly most were locals.
Service was a standout here. There were a lot of well dressed staff constantly walking around. They start you off with hot water – welcome to Asia! Empty plates were taken away quickly. One of our had a dietary requirement which resulted in 3 cooks showing us what to avoid. (Who would of thought the pizza dough had egg?)
Food Review
Appetizer section had the several salads, gazpacho, small deli meat and cheese section. 20 year aged belotta was a highlight. Solid fruit selection that included passion fruit, dragon fruit. Thai beef salad, very good drunken chicken, preserved eggs and cucumber, Moroccan Couscous, duck rillettes with toast, duck and chicken liver mousse, mozzarella cheese with cherry tomato salad, and more
Cold Seafood is always a favorite of many. King crab, prawns, smoked salmon, whelks, awesome lobster tails, expensive abalone in soy sauce, mussels and more.
Entrees were a standout. Quality over diverse selection. Indian entrees were excellent. Tandori Chicken, lamb rogan josh, Aloo gobi, Tandori fish, Naan, chutneys, and more. Tomato cream soup,
Asian food included several long boiled soups including coconut with chicken. Braised spinach and cloud fungus in Fish maw, Shrimp with salted egg yolk, Crispy chicken nuggets, fair galbi Korean short ribs, Malaysia Spicy Sour Tamarind fish curry. Sichuan Spicy Wonton station.
Lots of quality sashimi and sushi that was always crowded. The sushi pieces were all amped up with mayo or bonito toppings.
European hot food included an incredible Ox Tongue Pot au feu, Italian seafood soup, Parmesan roasted cauliflower, Sauteed Okra and french green beans, baked halibut, Sausage casserole, overcooked duck breast, roast potatoes, and Irish Stew. Pizza and several pastas were present. Never seen this level of service: The lady at the cooked food station suggest we get the large piece of ox tongue because it was more tender.
American Food included an excellent Prime rib and Rack of Lamb. The carving lady was extra nice and gave us the boes off the prime rib. Yorkshire pudding, mint sauce/jelly, and many other fixings.
Dessert was wide ranging and decadent. Cakes, Cookies, Panna Cotta, Mango pudding, portugese egg tarts, banana bread, hojicha Cheesecake, Indonesian layer cake, Choclate Mousee cake, Japanese Mochi, long boiled mung bean soup, and more. Ice Cream and Sorbet station.
Lots of chocolate truffles, bonbons, chocolate medallions, Raspberry Chocolate bars, and even a cool Sichuan spicy peanut chocolate brittle.
The Verandah Hong Kong dinner buffet wowed us with top flight service and a compact selection of high quality foods. No foie gras or souffles, but lots of other delectible cuisine. Amble selection for vegetarians.
