Where does a San Francisco Foodie eat in the Durham – Chapel Hill – Research Triangle, North Carolina? Follow our journey and learn from our experiences. We have family there and will return again.
Here is a compilation of more casual restaurants, snack places we visited during our 2019-2024 Durham – RTP Research Triangle trip and 2023 Asheville trip. Our goal was to find good eats at reasonable prices, primarily restaurants where locals go. We have no interest sampling cuisine that is done better at home in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is challenging on an expensive ‘island’, full of pricey tourist traps.
Our Trip includes visits to
- Durham
- Chapel Hill
- Morrisville
- Asheville
Food Focus:
- Local Mid South Cuisine
- BBQ
- Chicken and Waffles
- Southern Cuisine

Ribs Platter ($20 small) with 4 St. Louis Style spare ribs, 2 sides, cornbread. We choose collard greens and baked beans. Both sides were surprisingly excellent. 2 Meat Platter ($15 + $4 extra meat) – Pulled Pork was good, but not as good as the Ribs. Smokey, tender, fall off the bone. Very strong BBQ sauce. Baked beans were done well. 8/10

The Chicken Hut, Durham
10/15/2021
The Chicken Hut, Durham is a Soul Food restaurant in Durham, NC established in 1957. We came for takeout. We were on a quest to eat some true Southern Soul Food, mainly because there are few quality options in the San Francisco area. This is clearly a local spot with repeat customers getting food. No call ahead or delivery services.
The food at Chicken Hut spot on. Even though the interior of the spot is very basic with a cafeteria line. The menu changes daily. Fried chicken is available but requires a 20 minute wait. Maybe next time.

Dame’s Chicken & Waffles, Durham, NC
4/13/18
Why did we dine here? – Dame’s Chicken & Waffles was our goto place to try the real deal Southern Comfort food. (No Waffle house!) San Francisco has a couple places serving this dish, but none that authentic. This restaurant was located in downtown Durham, near several bars and clubs. They have 3 locations in the area. They server almost nothing but this dish!
Cuisine – Southern
Location – Downtown Durham
Verdict – Dame’s Chicken & Waffles satisfied our need to try real deal. Food is decent and prices are cheap. Service was a bit slow.
Dame’s Chicken & Waffles Food Picks:
Classy Hen ($12.50) with regular waffle and fried chicken is a nice looking dish with crispy egg battered chicken cutlet and a thick classic waffle. Vanilla and Almond Shmear.
Classy Hen ($12.50) with Vegan Waffle and grilled chicken was almost as good as the regular one. The chicken is healthier and also not bad. The maple shmear is too similar to the maple syrup.

Biscuitville, Durham
4/12/18
Why did we dine here? – Biscuitville is a NC, VA chain that specializes in guess what? Biscuits. This food seems to be a big staple of the area. We stopped in for a quick breakfast.
Cuisine – Southern
Location – Durham
Verdict – Biscuitville is a quick stop for breakfast. The food is cheap and passable. Interesting spot. Goto a restaurant like Grub for the real stuff.
Biscuitville Food Picks:
Fried Chicken Biscuit ($3.69) was better than sausage. Sorta like a big chicken mcnugget between a biscuit. The biscuit was ok, freshly made but not great.
Sausage and Egg Biscuit ($4.39 meal) was okay. Slightly better than McDonalds.
