We recently finished up our culinary tour of Germany in the Summer of 2012. It was interesting to see how authentic German food and restaurants in Munich compare to the ones we have in the San Francisco Bay Area. Below are several Munich restaurants we dined at. See our Tantris Review for a two Michelin Star Munich Restaurant.
Wirtshaus In Der Au
A loud, classic restaurant near our hotel with wooden tables and decor that included dungeon style lights. They do have an English menu.
Hits:
Bauernschmaus (€37.60 for 2 people) – Recommended by the waiters to most of the tourists like us. This is a massive combination plate with pig knuckle, roast pork, duck, sausages, several dumplings, two kinds of sauerkraut and a beer based sauce. This dish was large enough for four people. The sausages were some of the best we’ve had. The other items were okay, not foodie quality. We would recommend sticking to the sausages next time.

Augustiner Braerstube
We chose this restaurant due to its proximity to the main train station. This was a mistake because it was an extremely long walk.
Another loud restaurant with long wooden communal tables, lots of beer and drunk people. Prices were pretty reasonable, making it a good place if you are nearby. This restaurant actually ran out of several items around 7:30pm, which was a bit shocking. They have an online reservation system, that doesn’t seem to matter that much. They try to squish you in with your future friends.

Viktualienmarkt
Viktualienmarkt has 140 stalls and shops making it similar to San Francisco Ferry Building with established brick and mortar stores along with farmers market-type merchants. This market is a must visit for foodies, they start operation around 10am. Of course they have a outdoor beer garden. Below are some stand out merchants that we found.
Hits:
Fisch Wite München is a fish market that has some very fresh sandwiches. We recommend the Crayfish, Salmon, and Bismark sandwiches.
There is a meat market in the Northern part of the Viktualienmarkt that serves excellent roast pork with crispy skin as well as Bratwurst.
The Southern part of the market has a popular old school coffee stand serving reasonably priced coffee.
