Where does a San Francisco Foodie eat in the Singapore? Follow our journey and learn from our experiences.
Here is a compilation of more casual restaurants, snack places we visited during our 2019 Asia trip. Our goal was to find good eats at reasonable prices, primarily restaurants where locals go. We have no interest sampling cuisine that is done better at home in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is challenging on an expensive ‘island’, full of pricey tourist traps.

A beautiful restaurant from noted restaurateur Violet Oon. This one is located in the big restaurant and bar complex Clarke Quay. The menu focuses on the flavors of Singapore. Drinks are expensive.
Food Picks:
Chicken Satay (SG$16) Chicken chunks marinated in spices, grilled and served with spicy peanut sauce topped with grated pineapple, steamed rice cake, cucumber and red onion.
This dish was reasonably price for 3 large skewers. (Many items are in the $50 range) Decent flavor and very spicy sauce. 7/10
Sayur Lodeh ($14) is a vegan curry with mixed vegetables and tempeh. Rice and flavorful. 7/10
Pans:
Red Light Special cocktail (SG$18) was not very strong and a bit bland. 3/10

New Ubin Seafood @ Chijmes

30 Victoria Street
#02-01B/C Chijmes
Singapore 187996

On the second floor of the Chimes dining complex, this restaurant was filled with a lots of large parties and very few smaller ones. A friend recommend this spot, which features lots of traditional Singapore dishes.
The food was very good, although the service could have been better. We had to wait a long time to order and get the bill.
Food Picks:
Foie Gras Satay 1 stick (SG$9) Foie is banned in California, so we had to order this. It looks horrible but tasted great and is pretty cheap! Comes with a simple raspberry sauce and a slice of a baguette. 9/10
Live Mud Crab 500g Garlic Baked ($48) is a variant of famous Chili Crab. It comes with a TON of cooked garlic. Not very big and not much meat, but the flavor is really nice. 8.5/10
Fried Rice with House smoked pork belly ($13) was also well done. Could not see the egg, but this dish that also incorporates shrimp was balanced and nice.
Broccoli stir fried with Garlic ($10) hit the spot. Nicely cooked.

San Chen is an outpost of the legendary Boba tea shop based in Taiwan. This one is in the huge shopping mall. They grow their own tea and create each drink but cooking the tea a single drink at a time. This technique is a kin to Blue Bottle coffee. The drinks are really good. Tea quality is high and boba is large and nubile.
Food Picks:
Green Tea – Mango, Boba, 50% sugar SG$4.70. 9/10
Green Tea – Fresh milk, Boba, 50% sugar $5.20 9/10
