We recently finished up our culinary tour of Sorrento in the Summer of 2012. This is a very touristy area, one of those classic challenges for foodies. Avoiding a tourist trap is very difficult. Below are several restaurants in and around Sorrento that we dined at.
RE Foods
We selected RE Foods due to some recommendations on Chowhound and TripAdvisor. This restaurant was not very full on a Sunday night and had a barker in front, major warning signs. The food proved to be very good, so RE Foods was better than expected. We feel that there are better places in Sorrento for those who talked to the locals and visit their types of restaurants. The service was sluggish.
Hits:
Il Pescato del Giorno – Fish of the Day for Two (€47) this fresh fish was local and carved and debonaire table side. A slightly above average pasta accompanied the fish. The price was pretty expensive for this dish.
Risotto soute di calamari – Squid Risotto (€12) the seafood was very nicely done but the rice had very little flavor.

Chalet Porta Marina
This restaurant is located across the street from the ruins of Pompeii. We were hungry and decided to give this place a try. Our brains told us that the food here would probably suck. We were surprised and found some pretty decent food. Don’t hesitate eating here even though it looks dismal. The charged a €1 Coperto per person and automatically add a service charge.
Hits:
Pizza Margherita (Tomato, Mozzarella, Basil) €7.50 – One look at this pizza and we knew it was going to be good. This authentic pizza is probably better than almost all others in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Tagliatelle Bonlognes €9.00 – While not as stellar as the pizza, this pasta was decent.
Allegra Salad €9.50 – a really nice salad that looked great and featured some fresh produce.

Sorrento Restaurant
We dined at this restaurant because we were staying in the hotel and were too tired to go to a local restaurant.
Some of the dishes we had were pretty good, others average. The restaurant has a large outdoor terrace with a killer view of the Bay of Naples. The menu lacks almost all prices!
Hits:
Orata al sale con olio al finocchietto selvatico – Sea bream Fish backed in salt crust with wild funnel flavored olive oil (€27) this fresh local fish was carved table side and really amazed us. It is pretty logical that seafood would be the best bet here, but they actually cooked it extremely well.
Risotto al limone con astice e pomodorini canditi – Lemon flavored risotto with lobster (€17) a very good dish with tons of flavor and tender lobster. Not super al dente surprisingly.
Spaghetti alle vongole veraci – Spaghetti with clams (€16) also not very al dente, but a reasonable dish.
Tagliata di filetto di manzo con insalatina di rucola, pomodorini e scaglie di bufalino in cenere – Sliced fillet of beef with rocket, cherry tomatoes and buffalo cheese (€24) this was an average dish. Only get it if you really want beef.

Salumeria da Aldo
This is a deli/sandwich shop roughly a block to the left of the Ferry landing area. Capri is one massive tourist trap, so, we were determined to find an inexpensive local lunch place. The sandwiches here are massive and full of fresh ingredients. Soda and snacks are very inexpensive here. You may have to jostle with locals to get your order in. We suggest you ride the funicular to the top, look around, and come back down for lunch. Don’t forget to visit the Blue Gratto. It is defiantly worth the trouble.
