Thailand 2026 Trip Reviews

Reviewer: Foodnut.com

Foodnut travels, eats, and tells!  We’re based in San Francisco but have flown all over. We love Thai food and find some of the best in Thailand.

Bangkok reclining buddha

We recently finished up our latest culinary tour in 2026 visiting:

  • Bangkok
  • Koi Samui
  • Chiang Mai

The Thai food was superior to that in the San Francisco Bay Area and much cheaper. The service is at some restaurants another level here.

Here are some quick mini reviews of places we ate at, so you can understand how Thai food compares, and so you select the best places on your visit.
We have full reviews for places we deemed important enough.

Boon Tong Kee One Bangkok

ศูนย์การค้า One Bangkok, ห้อง 1B102 ชั้น B1, Witthayu Rd
Lumphini, Pathum Wan, Bangkok 10330

Why did we eat here? – Boon Tong Kee is a fast casual sit down restaurant that specializes in Singapore Chicken Rice among other items. 45 locations are in Thailand, 8 in Singapore. This location is in the new and beautiful One shopping complex, Floor B1. Michelin guide bib gourmand for the location on Balesier Road in Singapore.

Side note:
We highly recommend the One shopping mall that opened at the end of 2024.

The Parade tower is the building to check out. The Storeys not worth going for food!

Parade Level B1 has a lots of eateries and snack shops. We tried several and found it great.
Level 4 has more sit down restaurants.

Boon Tong Kee has 4.9 on Google because they give you a free drink if you leave a review! Beware.

Menu is very wide ranging, everything from signature chicken rice to steamed fish to pork dishes. Prices are way cheaper than in the US. Allergens are clearly marked on the menu, although some seem inaccurate. The soup did not have eggs as indicated.

The food was better than expected and prices are reasonable. Great place for a quick lunch. Keep in mind there are shops right next door for Thai Tea, desserts and other great items.

Service was fine. Drop and go but you can ask them for stuff easily.

Food Review:
Signature Boiled Chicken (240 baht = $7.36) with chicken thighs and leg (Size S). Chicken rice adds (30) had pretty good quantity, enough for 2 light eaters. Tender chicken bathed in a soy sauce. Chicken rice did have flavor but not a ton. Price would be triple in the US. 8.5/10

Steamed whole fish (320) takes 15 minutes to arrive. It was cooked perfectly, better than most restaurants. Need to get some starch to accompany this. 9.5/10

Soup with lotus root (120) was on the bland side. Not long boiled. 7.5/10

Overall – Very Good
Food – Very Good
Decor – Very Good
Service – Good
Value – Excellent

Why did we eat here? – Plu is a Thai restaurant in Bangkok, not far from our hotel, that is listed as Michelin Bib Gourmand. We wanted good authentic Thai but not a stuff tasting menu Michelin starred restaurant, so we dined here. You need to make an online reservation days ahead of time.

The restaurant is not huge and was full of larger parties, clearly many on work dinners.

Menu is full of beautiful pictures and is very long. This makes it hard to narrow what to order. Thankfully our server helped recommend several popular items.

The food was very good as expected. Much different that Thai restaurants back in San Francisco.
Prices are half that of the US and quality is much higher than typical Thai spots.

Service was just okay. She helped us navigate the menu but we had to hail to order and get the bill, etc.

Food Review:
Complimentary small amuse bouche

plu bangkok modern thai

Chicken with Galangal in Coconut soup (340) was more than just a soup. Tons of ingredients – chicken, mushroom, lemongrass and much more. Far better than in the US. 10/10

Fried Pork Belly with sea salt (245) is perfect for fans! Crispy, crunchy along with a sour and spicy dipping sauce. 10/10

Pomelo & Smoked duck breast Salad (295) was recommended and hit the spot. Not a lot of duck but the pomelo hit the spot with its unique flavor. 9/10

Stir-fried morning glory (140) was also cooked just right. Tender, not mushy with just enough flavor. 9/10

Stir-fried beef with tree basil (360) had thin square cuts of beef of reasonable quality. Again cooked well with a different type of basil than back in the US. 9/10

Basilnade (190) was an expensive NA drink. A bit odd in flavor profile. 8/10

Lemongrsass Panda cooler (90) had subtle flavors and had a ton of ice like most drinks. The ice appeared to be safe. 8/10

Nai Ek Roll Noodle

442 ซอย 9, Samphanthawong
Bangkok 10100
022264651

Nai Ek Roll Noodle is a street food restaurant in Bangkok’s Chinatown. The name is deceptive because their focus is pork belly rice plates. 4.4 on Google.

Why did we eat here? – We were walking by and saw that it was popular and had some nice looking pork belly.

Menu is pretty narrow with just a couple soups and pork rice plates. Vegetarians can get tofu substitution.

The food was better than expected and very cheap. About US$2 for a pork belly rice plate!

Service was fast and drop and go. They pressure you to order quickly and the food comes within minutes.

There are so many street food stalls in Chinatown. Clearly this is a busy one that gets a lot of business for its great pork belly.

Food Review:

Nai Ek Roll Noodle Bangkok

Deep fried crispy pork with rice (80) had some super crispy pork belly that hit the spot. One of the best we’ve had. 10/10

Pork Spareribs with Chinese herbs soup (80) was clearly a long double boiled soup with good flavor. Includes several spareribs. 9/10

Roll Noodles soup (70) with tofu instead of meat was a reasonable size and had lots of tender rice noodle rolls. 8.5/10

SOMA Bangkok

Siam Patumwan House, 414 Phayathai Road Wang Mai Sub District
Pathum Wan, Bangkok 10330
095 372 2644

https://www.somabangkok.com

Why did we eat here? – Soma is a Michelin listed Modern Thai restaurant in Bangkok. We were at the massive MBK Center shopping mall and saw this restaurant was just across the street.
It is hard to locate Soma without asking for directions. It is situated inside an office tower, around the corner from the elevators. More well heeled patrons eat here that most places.

You need to reserve in advance and prepay a deposit. 4.6 on Google. Open for lunch and dinner.

Menu is fairly compact but wide ranging with modern takes on Thai cuisine. They have a QR code which opens up a menu with beautiful pictures. The waiters are pretty good with dietary requirements, which can be logged on the reservation page. No chili rating on the menu, so ask!

https://storage.googleapis.com/qrfyprod/1d97dadd-7498-4f55-8cad-d97794f18478.pdf

The food was very good, nothing like we have in the US. Felt a bit odd trying modern Thai, while we had not mastered traditional Thai here. Beware, there are lots of bold flavors in dishes, no subtlety.

Service was good but not great. Long pauses, forgotten item, and we needed reminders to get the bill, etc.

Soma serves up Modern Thai and nice surroundings. We have nothing like this in the San Francisco Bay Area. Prices are reasonable, but not cheap by Thailand standards. Give it a try if you are nearby.

Food Review:

Soma Bangkok Thai

Prawn Naam-yum BooBoo (770 THB = USD$23) River prawn salad looks great with its large grilled prawn. Cooked just right and very sweet meat. The salad was very spicy, at about 6/10. 9/10

Crispy Sago with Minced pork (210) really highlights a shrimp inside. Small bites that are fun but not essential. 8/10

Spicy fish broth (450) was even spicier at 8/10. Nice portion of tender fish. 8.5/10

Chayote sugar snap peas and baked mushrooms (260) is a non spicy veggie that helped us round out the dinner. Very nice flavor profile. 9/10

Deep fried pork belly with crispy garlic and fish sauce dressing (290) is perfect for fans of this delicacy. Very crisp and rich. The sauce was very spicy! 10/10

Logan Mochi (300) with coconut ice cream, dried Logan caramel and fried kao-mao is an eggless rich dessert. The mochi was very chewy and hard to break apart. Not too sweet or creamy. 9.5/10

Home

Why did we eat here? – Phensiri is one of a few restaurants listed in the Michelin guide for this area of Koh Samui, Bo Phut – about 15 minutes south of busy Chaweng beach. It is named after the mom of the chef-owner who runs it. This restaurant famed for its bold southern Thai cuisine and use of fresh local ingredients. Phensiri is open for lunch through dinner. Must call to book. 4.4 on Google.

Menu is huge with lots of beautiful pictures. All the classics are here and many more. Several items are marked recommended in red, so we filtered the menu by looking for this.
https://www.phensiri.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Phensiri-Menu-Card-New.pdf

The food was some of the best we had in Thailand. Curry, soup, and bitter melon were superb.

Service was friendly and accessible.

Phensiri deserves to be on your short list if you are in this area. They really know how to cook. Book early.

Food Review:

Phensiri Koi Samui duck curry

Ghang Phed Pet yang (Classic Red Curry) (390) Roasted duck in curry lychee, cherry tomatoes, and pineapple is an excellent rich curry with thinly sliced duck. Definitely needs rice. Slightly spicy. 10/10

Mara Khinok Phad Neu Pla Khub (250) Stir-fried bitter melon with grated fish meat was a recommended dish and really hit the spot with the variety of flavors. Not too bitter. 10/10

Tom Kati Yod Prow (220) Coconut shoot and stinky green bean in coconut milk was not overly cream but possessed a rich flavor and lots of vegetables in the soup. Not spicy. 10/10

Kao Min (120 small) Steam rice coconut milk, salted crispy shrimps makes your rice more interesting that plain old white rice. 8.5/10

Golden Dream (250) deep fried banana with honey, coconut ice cream is fine but the ice cream is the star. 8.5/10

Sautéed Morning Glory (200) served as the vegetable balance for our meal. Nothing special, but cooked fine. 8.5/10

But Roy Kati (250) rice ball in coconut milk with durian. You can select other fruit if you do not like this stinky fruit! 9/10

Thai ice tea (150) is amped up, it comes with a huge frozen Thai tea ice cube. 8.5/10

Boho Breakfast Buffet

Kimpton Kitalay
Koh Samui, Thailand

Why did we eat here? – We were staying at the Kimpton Kitalay hotel and had free breakfast, so it was a cheap way to fill out. Thanks to our Sapphire credit card!

The beautiful venue is all outdoors and it was hot even at 7am. Ouch.

Selection was pretty broad with a big emphasis on Thai dishes and some local items. You can scan the QR code and order off the menu too.

https://infrasys-ogs-sg.shijicloud.com/ogs2/order.php/Menu/on_day_click?qr=0053A8F0EF2BCE6541D48DA3100DCB46D233E4DB579494D4C461D1CDE66387F680532B9FA1E6C86D1E572A2C7806ACA1342C3DAF947D0E6DBF484EC15DEB6BE779156BA9CF575ED3D9D75ED55EA56EFEB7D3D0DFB939BFE2EAB21B3EA19613978A1EBC86F0F6A9FA1ED18BD729411440525975FD8183253535FE3578A41190CB7539DAD92AA93783594621768280AF41

The food was good but not great. Our buffet at the Ritz Carlton Bangkok was far better.

Service was also passable but not great.

Conclusion:
No complaints because it was free. Good way to fill up before hitting the beach or venturing out.

Boho

Kimpton Kitalay Hotel
10, 79, Bo Put, Amphoe Ko Samui, Surat Thani 84320
Thailand
077 951 999

Homepage

Why did we eat here? – We dined at Boho at their breakfast buffet because we had free breakfast included as a credit card benefit. Hotel credit was also given to us, so we also tried lunch there. The Kitalay is a beautiful resort hotel, right on the beach. Great service and locations – highly recommended. Book with a Sapphire or Amex Platinum card to get extra benefits. Decor is very good with much of it open air.

Breakfast buffet was extensive with both Western and Thai items. Allergens were clearly labelled. Lots of tropical fruits like lychee, dragon fruit, papaya. Normal Western dishes like made to order omelets, bacon, sausage, etc. Extensive bakery selection and pastries and breads. Many Thai hot dishes including make your own noodles, several Thai desserts. A rotating noodle station outside that we almost missed. Lots of different juices including the requisite Thai Ice Tea or coffee.

Food quality was above average but not as good as the Ritz Carlton Bangkok breakfast buffet. Overall 8.5/10

Service was friendly and solid but not exceptional. Long pauses in taking plates away, etc.

We had lunch once and enjoyed several Southern Thai dishes the waitress recommended. Never ate anything like them before. Prices are about half the price of the US.

Khao Yum (580) with Grilled prawns is a traditional southern style butterfly pea infused rice salad that is mixed together at the table. Beautiful! 9/10

Khao Soi Gai (420) was made with rice noodles per our request and was silky smooth with lots of chicken. 9.5/10

Som tam Thai Gai yang (380) papaya salad with Thai Spiced grilled chicken as super spicy, 7 out of 10 but well done. Chicken was average. 8.5/10

Pad Thai had 3 large prawns and looked great. 9.5/10

Conclusion:
Boho is an obvious choice when staying at the Kitalay and will help get your day started the right way.

Bodhi Terrace

Anantara Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai, Thailand

https://www.anantara.com/en/chiang-mai/restaurants/bodhi-terrace

Why did we eat here? – Bodhi Terrace is the main casual restaurant in the beautiful Anantara Chiang Mai hotel. We ate there for both lunch and breakfast because we had free credit from our credit card. Normally we would try to eat these meals outside the hotel at a real local spot.

Breakfast is a wide ranging buffet, while lunch is a normal sit-down affair.

You can order off a menu too. They made custom noodles and waffles to accommodate us. Lots of different juices including the requisite Thai Ice Tea or coffee.

Food quality was above average but not as good as the Ritz Carlton Bangkok breakfast buffet. Overall 8.5/10

Service was top notch and extremely friendly and warm. This hotel asks for your dietary requirements upon checkin and makes sure you have a great time. Rarely do you get this level of service in the US.

Conclusion:
Even though our meals were included in a special credit card offer, we can hardily recommend this hotel and this restaurant.

Lunch Food Review:

Bodhi Terrace Chiang Mai Khao soi

Khao Soi with river prawn (990) was modified to eggless rice noodles. Huge prawn that was split down the middle. Excellent flavors between the prawn and curry. Not enough noodles. 10/10

Tom Yum Goong (490) was also elevated compared to the USA. Strong bold flavors but not overly rice. 9/10

Pad Thai Chaiya (490) looks unlike any we’ve eaten in the USA. Very nicely done and big portion. 10/10

Kiti Panit

19 Tha Phae Road, Chang Khlan Sub-district,
Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai 50100
https://www.kitipanit.com/

Why did we eat here? – Kiti Panit is listed as a restaurant in the Michelin Guide. There are no starred restaurant in Chiang Mai. We choose this spot due to its proximity to our hotel. There are so many restaurants nearby with gamed Google reviews, it makes it difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff. Kiti serves Lanna Cuisine. We had to call them to make a reservation, they did not answer email.

This is a casual restaurant, nothing super fancy, but wide ranging menu that is very affordable. The menu is online with QR code to scan. They take dietary requirements seriously.

The food was about what we expected, very good. High-quality ingredients and some amping up of classic dishes.

Service was solid but not exceptional. You have to hail people to get things done, but there were a lot of servers floating around.

Conclusion:
Kiti Panit fulfilled our meal needs for quality Thai food (non touristy) at affordable prices, not far from our hotel.

Food Review:
Nam Prik Num (190) eggplant Nam Prik relish served with vegetables. Come with Very nice pork chitterlings. Lots of different vegetables to dip with the eggplant. Spice level 3 out of 10. 8.5/10

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g293917-d10467421-Reviews-Auan_Ocha_Chicken_Rice-Chiang_Mai.html

Why did we eat here? – Uan Ocha is a Khao Man Gai or Chicken rice restaurant in Chiang mai. It was recommended by 2 different locals as the closest spot near our hotel. Never saw this dish while walking around or visiting night markets. We last ate this back in 2020, so it was high time we came back.
4.4 on Google. 3.7 on Trip advisor. The address did not exist on Grab, so we used the 7-11 next door.

Opens for breakfast 6am to 3pm or until they sell out.

Menu is short and sweet with regular, fried or a mixed of the two. They also have satay skewers and some desserts.

The food was about what we expected. Simple home cooked chicken.

Service was fine for us foreigners. They have a menu with English.

Conclusion: Come here if you are a fellow Khao Man Gai fan and are staying nearby.

Food Review:
Fried and boiled chicken (60) is insanely cheap. Portion size is not huge. The chicken was tender and cooked fine. The other one was crisp. The soup was hot and full of flavor. The spicy add in was super spicy – 7 out of 10. You also get a hot and sour and a savory dip. They give you a cup with ice and straw, anticipating you will buy their water.

Phuket and Chiang Mai 2019, Thailand Restaurant Reviews

Phuket SeafoodWhere does a San Francisco Foodie eat in Thailand? Follow our journey and learn from our experiences.

Here is a compilation of more casual restaurants, snack places we visited during our 2020 Asia trip. Our goal was to find good eats at reasonable prices, primarily restaurants where locals go. We have no interest sampling cuisine that is done better at home in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is challenging on an expensive ‘island’, full of pricey tourist traps.

Useful Websites

Our Trip includes visits to

  • Restaurants
  • Snack Shops
  • and more

Food Focus:

  • Chicken Rice
  • Local Cuisine

Phuket Thailand

The restaurant scene here is very chaotic and touristy. It is hard to find true foodie quality restaurants. We went to top rated Trip advisor spots and found them fair at best.

Phuket 83000 Thailand

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g1210687-d2335875-Reviews-Red_Duck_Restaurant-Kata_Beach_Karon_Phuket.html

Red Duck is a Thai restaurant in touristy Phuket. It is listed in the Lonely Planet tour book so it is pretty popular. We found the food pretty average though. There does not seem to be any real food restaurant in this area, just a bunch of tourist restaurants that serve everything from French fries to pizza to Pad Thai!

Prices are reasonable. This city is pretty cheap to eat in.

Our hotel suggested this ‘restaurant’, which is more like a courtyard of street food stalls. Everything from pizza to Thai food to BBQ seafood. You order from each stall and sit in a common area. They had live much when we ate. The food was fine, better than expected, but not spectacular. Prices are cheap.

We actually found a better spot near the corner of Kata Rd. The lady cooks Thai dishes well but is really slow.

Even the food we got on a boat tour to James Bond Island had better food.

Sirichai Khao Man Gai

We tried to eat at the famous Kiat Ocha for now man Gai (Hainanese style boiled chicken), but they sold out early. A block away we found Sirichai with a line out front. They serve Hainanese Chicken Rice, so we decided to eat here instead.

The food here hit the spot. It was cheap and good. Someday we will try Kiat Ocha. If they are closed or sold out, come here instead.

Food Picks:

Chicken combo served over rice steamed and crispy chicken (50 baht – USD$1.75) comes with some slightly spicy chicken soup. The chicken was very well done and flavorful. The lightly breaded fried chicken was also very good. Cheap eats and great quality.

Samsen Villa was recommended in a Chowhound forum thread. The restaurant, founded in 1978, is located on the side of the river in a nice area. The spot was packed with lots of locals.

We found the food just slightly above average, nothing particularly exciting. They have an English menu. Service was slow.

Food Picks:
Royal Thai Style Pork Satay (120) is a signature dish. Interesting pork flavor. Peanut sauce was very weak.

Royal Thai Crispy fried rice noodle with signature sauce (100) was a cool crispy, sweet dish. Interesting and good.

We stayed at the X2 Chiang Mai Riverside Resort. This is a wonderful modern hotel that is not ultra expensive. Our room included free breakfast. A combination mini buffet with 2 entrees from the menu.

The entrees we got were excellent. From Chiang Mai sausage to fried rice to French toast.

We’ve read great things about their dinner menu, so give it a try and report back.

We finally ate at the famous Kiat Ocha for Khao Man Gai (Hainanese style boiled chicken). It sold out at 1:30pm the previous day, so we went at Noon. (6am-3pm hours) If it sells our go a block away to Sirichai. This spot is right near the Three Kings Monument and next to the Instagrammable Wat Inthakhin Sadue Muang.

The food here hit the spot. The food was instantly delivered. It was cheap and good. Far better than our favorite place, Rooster and Rice in SF.

Food Picks:

Chicken combo served over rice steamed and crispy chicken (Medium size 100 baht – USD$3.50) comes with some super hot chicken soup. Be sure to order a bigger size so you can mix and match styles. The chicken was very well done and flavorful. The lightly breaded fried chicken was the best. We ordered even more. Cheap eats and great quality. 8.5/10

Rice (10) was really well done too. Lots of fatty flavor. 8/10

Chicken Satay (Small 50) was good, but you can just stick to the chicken. Dipping sauce was a bit bland. 7/10

Thai ice tea (20) was good. Avoid the ice if you are cautious like us. 7/10
