Follow our journey and learn from our experiences over several trips. Here is a compilation of more casual restaurants, snack places we visited during our 2016, 2017, 2019, 2023-2024 New York City trips. Our goal was to find good eats at reasonable prices, primarily restaurants where locals go. We have no interest sampling cuisine that is done better at home in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is challenging on an expensive ‘island’, full of pricey tourist traps. Food that is better in New York than in San Francisco Pizza Bagels Italian Sichuan Ethnic food – African, South American, etc.. Our Trip includes visits to Brooklyn, Flushing. One Michelin Star, 4.5 stars on Yelp. We decided to see if it lives up to the hype. The older set in the 40’s to 60’s were dining. Cuisine – American Location – NYC West Village Verdict – Gotham Bar & Grill lives up to its billing. The food is excellent as was the service. Timeless American Cuisine done right. Beware: We did get seated in no-mans land, so there is definitely some stuffiness here. Gotham Bar & Grill Food Picks: Mojito ($18) was a tad under sugared but ok. Tuna Tartare ($29) cucumber, shiso, miso is a signature dish and must get. White Asparagus Salad ($26) farm egg, spring onion, pancetta, arugula pesto, parmigiano reggiano had several large thick fresh stalks. A spring addition to the menu. Seared Foie Gras ($37) roasted fig, port wine reduction was fab. This has gotten banned in California AGAIN, so we could not wait for this dish. Smoooooth. Miso Black Cod ($49) bok choy, shiitake, sticky rice, soy ginger lemongrass is a signature dish and also a MUST get. It […]

Why did we dine here? – The Best Milk shakes of course! Black Tap has rocked the social media world with huge shakes covered with all sorts of crazy candies, cookies. It was definitely on our must hit NYC list. This restaurant is notorious for waits up to 3 hours, something we did not look forward to. We lined up 1 hour before they opened and were seated in the first round of guests. Dining her later in the day is an iffy move, resulting in very long waits. The Meatpacking location is far bigger than the Soho one, so go there. We have dined at both locations and found the food consistent. In 2017 they added 2 more locations. We dined at the 2 week old Lower East Side location in the Summer and found it had no line. Insider Tip – Line up 60 minutes before they open. Order a burger and shake. Cuisine – Burgers Location – New York Soho and Meatpacking District Opened – 2015 Service – Black Tap had decent service with fun waiters who helped everyone get in the mood. They offered helpful advice. Verdict – Yes, Black Tap serves up outrageous shakes, but their […]
