The same folks run several, casual Ben Tre restaurants in San Mateo and Millbrae. (Which we like for casual fare.) We dined here a couple years back right after it opened and didn’t find it very compelling. They have improved the menu, added items, and have garnered some Instagram press for there PhoZila $79 noodle dish. We ate in the summer of 2021 during the pandemic, and were seated in their outdoor Parklet which has good spacing. Inside there isn’t as much spacing. Gao was so good, we have returned. They do not take reservations, so there are a long wait here. Come earlier or during lunch. Insider Tip – Line up early Cuisine – Vietnamese Location – San Mateo Downtown Opened – 2018 Service – The service is fair, they are just too busy, so the food takes a long time to arrive. Cocktails arrive in the middle of entrée time. Pandemic excuse bad service time! Verdict – Gao Viet Kitchen is a step up from your local Pho place and not chi-chi like Tamarine in Palo Alto. Authentic food with quality […]

Why did we dine here? – Pho Ao Sen is renowned to be one of the best Vietnamese Noodle houses in the San Francisco Bay Area. We finally got a chance to visit them as we were passing through the East Bay. Last visit was in summer 2014. Insider Tip – Cash only, ignore the bad service. Cuisine – Vietnamese Location – Oakland Opened – 2008 Service – Pho Ao Sen had bad service, we had to wait awhile to order and had to struggle to get the bill. Verdict – Pho Ao Sen serves up some of the best Pho in the Bay Area. Give it a try, the prices are very reasonable. Checkout Tamarine in Palo Alto for some really good Pho. Pho Ao Sen Signature Dishes – Pho, rice plates. Pho Ao Sen’s Menu has a wide variet of items from Pho to Rice Plates to appetizers. Website Pho Ao Sen Menu Pho Ao Sen Food Picks: Shrimp Rice rolls ($6) hit the spot. Lots of peanut dipping sauce too. Pho Tai Chin Nam Gan Sach ($6.75) Sliced eye round steak, well-done brisket, well-done flank, soft tendon, and tripe – A classic bowl of noodles. Good broth […]

Why did we dine here? – Turtle Tower is a popular Vietnamese restaurant in San Francisco with several locations. Hà Nội Style Vietnamese Cuisine is their focus. We dined at the original, located in the heart of the gritty Tenderloin District of San Francisco. It moved down the block and reopened in June 2013 and added banh mi sandwiches. Our last visit was in February 2014. Insider Tip – Bring cash. Go down the block and purchase some other Vietnamese food. Cuisine – Vietnamese Location – San Francisco Tenderloin Opened – 2000 Service – Turtle Tower had typical service for a mom and pop joint. The place is bigger now and you will probably need to hail down servers to get things done like the bill and getting refills. Verdict – Turtle Tower serves up inexpensive bowls of quality Pho. We found the Pho satisfying but not the best in the San Francisco Area. This original location is renowned by many to be their best location. We have found that Ben Tre in Millbrae and Pho Ao Sen in Oakland have better Pho. Turtle Tower Signature Dishes – […]

La Petite Camille is a fairly busy Vietnamese restaurant on El Camino Real in Millbrae. We ate next door and noticed how busy it was, so decided to try it sometime. La Petite Camille’s Decor is standard generic plain for an asian restaurant. Lots of families and couples were eating when we visited. This is pretty much a fast place for a meal. Menu pics Menu Picks: None OK: Raw Beef Salad ($8.95) with thin slices of beef seasoned with lemon, fish sauce, mint, onion, peanuts tasted ok. Flavor was fair, not a lot of beef. Lots of vegis. Five Spice Chicken ($8.75) with tender roast chicken seasoned with five spices was a little better than average. Little on the greasy side. Quantity was huge. Vietnamese Crepe ($8.65) with rice flower, egg, chicken, and shrimp. Served with lettuce and fish sauce. It had a lots of egg and very little flour. Lots of bean sprouts. Even had some unexpected cornmeal. Weird. Noodle Add-ins Seafood Noodle ($7.25) had good quantity and included fish cakes and shrimp but the included jalapenos made it way too hot. Something we’ve never encountered at Vietnamese places. No need for the hot sauce. Red Bean, Yellow […]
