The Shihlin Night Market in Taipei, Taiwan is a must visit for food loving travelers. It is obviously located in the Shilin District of Taipei, just a couple blocks from the Jiantan MRT subway station. (Not Shihlin Station) This is the largest and most famous night market in the city and typically starts up around 4pm in the afternoon. Here are some pictures and videos of our night market experience: The main entrance leads to a covered area which mainly contains gift booths, games, and other touristy shops. Of interest is the shrimp fishing located to the immediate right. 7 poles for NT$100. If you caught a shrimp, they will skewer it and cooked the little crustacean. Boy where they tasty. The Lonely Planet Tour book said to avoid the basement’s food court due to poor air circulation. Boy is that bad advice. Downstairs you will find a busy bustling food center with stalls that sell: seafood, desserts, noodles, stinky tofu, skewers, sausages, juices, classic Taiwanese egg dishes, milk tea, bakeries and more. One of our best meals was at the vendor against the wall, all the way to the left after you walk downstairs. Fried Mini Crabs NT$150 in […]

Why did we dine here? – Shin Yeh at Taipei 101 is the flagship restaurant for this local restaurant group. This particular Shin Yeh is located on the 85th floor of the Taipei 101 Skyscraper. We were looking for a high end restaurant to celebrate Christmas and settled on this place. Of note, there really aren’t a lot of fine dining Taiwanese restaurants here. Night markets, small local places are all over the place. If you have other suggestions, please leave them in the comments. Shin Yeh 101 has several other locations including more casual restaurants and even a buffet. The Taipei 101 restaurant focuses on Taiwanese food and Chinese food with many local signature dishes that we were excited to try for the first time. While they are open for lunch, we would recommend dining here for dinner. The view is stunning at night, assuming weather permits. If there are fireworks for the New Year, you will have a surreal view of them. Insider Tip – There is a minimum charge per person during holidays. NT$900 per person on Christmas Eve. Make reservations well in advance. Cuisine – Taiwanese, Chinese Location – Taipei 101, Taiwan Opened – 2004 Service […]

Warning: The best Xiao Long Bao was spotted here! Why did we dine here? – Din Tai Fung is a popular Xiao Long Bao (small bamboo steamer bun in Chinese) – Shanghai Steamed dumpling restaurant with locations in Bellevue, Los Angeles, Taipei, Hong Kong, Japan, China, Singapore, and several other countries. Learn how to buy a Taiwan prepaid SIM card for your iPhone or Android smartphone. We never thought of ourselves as xiaolongbao fanatics, but after visiting any San Francisco area restaurant rumored to have good steamed dumplings.. Din Tai Fung Hong Kong, Shanghai, Arcadia, Bellevue, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur.. Numerous top rated restaurants in Shanghai.. I guess we are guilty. We continue our quest for the best in Taiwan. Several foodies have expressed their opinion that Din Tai Fung Taipei is #1. Time to see for ourselves. Our journey started in the Taipei 101 skyscraper, the tallest building in the world for several years. Downstairs in the food court is a large flagship local of the dumpling chain king. Din Tai Fung Taipei 101 reminded us how xiaolongbao or Shanghai Steamed Dumplings should taste and look. They are constantly cranked out with robot like precision.

More Foodie delights from our recent trip to China. What is a fast food place doing on the Foodnut.com? Eating fast food on a vacation? Sacrilegious! We visited KFC in a Beijing shopping mall when we wanted a small snack. We noticed some Egg Custard tarts on the menu and gave them a try. They came to us steamy hot and tasted great. These are Portuguese style with a slightly burnt top. Portuguese monks in Lisbon created them and called them Pasteis de Nata. Better than the much lauded Golden Gate Bakery ones in San Francisco and a lot cheaper. Maybe not as good as Hong Kong’s best. The chicken and corn are still better in the USA. These tarts are available in other locations throughout Asia including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Shanghai.
