Why did we dine here? – Pabu is a Japanese Izakaya-style restaurant in San Francisco’s Financial District from Michael Mina in partnership with Chef Ken Tominaga. The chef’s Hana restaurant in a Rohnert Park had garnered a local following including Mina. This is the first Japanese restaurant for Mina. Pabu is an upscale (read $$$$) restaurant and next door is the more casual Ramen Bar. We are fans of Japanese and read Bauer’s 3 star review, so we decided to give it a try. In all fairness we were expecting high prices and good but not stellar food. When were in the East Bay the previous week, we visited Ippuku and were impressed. Does Pabu match this high mark? Insider Tip – Beware that costs can add up fast. Be sure to get soup and entrees. Keep room for dessert Cuisine – Japanese Location – San Francisco Financial District Opened – 2015 Service – Pabu Service was disjointed from the minute we arrived. They were overloaded and it took way too long to get our order taken. Food pacing was off, with very long pauses in service. Our Miso Cod took forever to arrive.

Best sushi ever! Why did we dine here? – The first food we think about when we were planning our Japan trip was Sushi. Sushi or sashimi is a favorite dish of ours, so we were eager to plan a pilgrimage to eat some real Japanese authentic sushi. Our trip was in late March, early April, just in time for the cherry blossom (Sakura) season, and we soon found it was VERY difficult to even reserve a hotel room in Tokyo. Prices are extremely high and we had to settle on the one or two hotels still available. If you are planning to visit Japan during this season, reserve MONTHS in advance. This peak season meant that most of the big names were full. No Jiro, No Saito, Sawada, or Miyakozushi, etc, etc. A word of warning, several restaurants our concierge tried to reserve for us would not take non Japanese speaking parties. Some Japanese restaurants have some strict rules. Sushi Kanesaka was suggested by our hotel concierge. Very good Tabelog rating at 4.1, Saito is 4.53, Jiro 4.1. It received Two Michelin Stars and was good enough for us. Kanesaka also has an outpost in Singapore. Our Sushi Master […]

Sushi Ran is a popular Japanese restaurant in Sausalito run by chef Taka Toshi. They describe their food as “vibrant fusion of traditional Japanese and Pacific cuisine”. Since 1986 they have been serving up top notch Japanese food in Marin. They have the standard Japanese fare you would expect, including Omakase (Trust the chef) plus lots of dinner specials and cooked items. They have an extensive wine and sake collection. You can eat in the main dining room or in the sake and wine bar next door that has an outdoor patio. Our last visit was in the summer of 2014. Decor, Vibe – Understated Asian decor and artwork with sushi bars on both sides of their restaurant. Some tourists but lots of locals 30+, and some families were taking in the good food. Sushi Ran Menu Contains a wide variety of items from the usual nigiri and sashimi to cooked items. We liked the clear marking of sustainable fish as well as items from Tokyo’s Tsukiji Fish Market. Sushi Ran Picks: Lemon Drop ($10) was made with Japanese liquor instead of vodka. Tall, balanced and pretty close to a normal version. California Roll ($7.50) – 6 pieces with real […]

Why did we dine here? – Kani Kosen was recommended by a friend. This is a old school, little known sleeper restaurant located in a strip mall off the main drag. No one would find this place unless they knew about it. They specialize in fresh fish and sushi. Insider Tip – Make a reservation, come during the week when the fish is fresher. Cuisine – Japanese Location – Pacifica Opened – 1990 Service – Kani Kosen is run by a Japanese couple. The wife is very warm and friendly.
