It was formed in Shanghai in 1994 by Mrs. Yang, who still keeps her recipe secret. They have many locations in Shanghai and are opening more all the time even in Austrailia. We dined at the Shanghai Huanghe location nearest to our hotel by People’s Square. Yang’s had a line when we went there, as is the case most of the time because the dumplings are cooked in batches. Our first visit was in 2010, our latest Summer 2025. In 2015 we also made a pilgrimage to Da Chun, which has been serving authentic Sheng Jian Bao since the 1950’s. In 2025 we notice that they really upgraded the interior, making it far more commercial. It was very plain before, now it looks better. When we think about Shanghai, this is one of the first restaurants we start to drool over! They are that great and CHEAP. This Yang’s Dumpling location is a great place to visit, because across […]

We recently finished a culinary tour of China in the Summer of 2025. Shanghai is a world class city full of great food. Most of the Chinese food was superior to that in the San Francisco Bay Area and even Vancouver, BC Canada. Here are some quick mini reviews of places we ate at, so you can understand how Shanghai food compares, and so you select the best places on your visit. We have full reviews for places we deemed important enough; Other Shanghai reviews: Din Tai Fung, Fu 1039, Jardin de Jade – Jade Garden, Jia Jia Tang Bao, South Beauty, Yang’s Dumplings, Nanling Restaurant. If a restaurant does not have a website, we link to their Dianping page. 2025 Shanghai Restaurant Reviews (Includes Suzhou) 5/18/25 Lai Lai Xiao Long Bao (莱莱小笼) 504 Tianjin Rd, Huangpu Shanghai, China, 200001 021 63520230 Lai Lai is known for top rated xiao long bao XLB or soup dumplings. We’ve been to Yu garden, Jia jia, DTF and several other places on past trips, so it was time for a new place. This is the original location (4 total) and had a 25 minute line that extended to both sides of the […]

Why did we dine here? – Da Chun is an old school Sheng jian bao restaurant. We love Yang’s Dumplings (Xiao Yang) and try to eat there everytime we visit Shanghai, but made sure we visit the harbinger of this genre. This restaurant has several locations, yet we chose the Da Shi Jie outpost as it is supposed to be the best. Interior Decor Insider Tip – Stick to the Sheng jian bao, ignore other items like soup. Bring a drink. Cuisine – Shanghai Chinese Location – Shanghai Huangpu District Opened – 1950 Service – Da Chun is an order, pay then pickup spot. Not much service action here.
