Why did we dine here? – Gorilla BBQ is a restaurant located inside a railroad car on the side of Highway One in Pacifica. We’ve read about this place (it was featured in the Wall Street Journal) and finally got a chance to try it, after driving through the beautiful new Tom Lantos Tunnel. Insider Tip – Get the 3 Meat Combo. No seating inside or outside, so be prepared to eat in your car or drive to the beach. Cuisine – BBQ Location – Pacifica, On Highway 1 Opened – 2006 Service – Gorilla BBQ had friendly, efficient service with good recommendations. Verdict – Gorilla BBQ hit the spot for large quantities of quality meat and sides. Be sure to check it out if you are passing through this area. This BBQ might be better than Memphis Mini’s in San Francisco and Mack’s in San Carlos. If you are interested in higher end cuisine, keep driving south on Highway One to Peruvian Michelin Starred La Costanera in Montara Beach. Gorilla BBQ Signature Dishes – Brisket, ribs Gorilla BBQ’s Menu has the typical BBQ meats and sides. Vegetarians can order Portabella Mushrooms, Eggplant, or Zucchini.

Why did we dine here? – Kani Kosen was recommended by a friend. This is a old school, little known sleeper restaurant located in a strip mall off the main drag. No one would find this place unless they knew about it. They specialize in fresh fish and sushi. Insider Tip – Make a reservation, come during the week when the fish is fresher. Cuisine – Japanese Location – Pacifica Opened – 1990 Service – Kani Kosen is run by a Japanese couple. The wife is very warm and friendly. She knows the regulars by first name. Many have been coming for years. Her husband is the chef. He can only produce so much, so expect long lag times. Verdict – Kani Kosen is a surprisingly good sushi restaurant in the middle of nowhere. If you like sushi and happen to be nearby, definitely give this place a try. Kani Kosen Signature Dishes – Crab, sushi, sashimi Kani Kosen’s Menu has all the classic Japanese American dishes along with lots of fresh fish that varies from day to day.
