Why did we dine here? – Don Antonio by Starita is a popular pizza restaurant in New York City’s Midtown area. It brings together 2 pizza superstars: Roberto Caporuscio of Kesté Pizza & Vino in New York City, and his maestro, Antonio Starita of Pizzeria Starita a Materdei in Naples. Starita in Naples remains our top Pizza experience, so we had to try this place out. This narrow but long and loud restaurant had rock thumping away. Insider Tip – No reservations, so come earlier for faster service. Not far from Theater district. Cuisine – Pizza Location – Midtown New York Opened – 2012 Service – Don Antonio had reasonable service. The server was friendly, especially when we told him we’d been to Starita in Napoli. Don’t expect lots of attention here, afterall it is a pizza joint. Verdict – Don Antonio serves up very good pizza. Not up to Starita in Naples, but pretty fine authentic Neapolitan style pies in the Big Apple. A great place to go when you are in Times Square or watching a show in the Theater district. Is this restaurant worth a 5 minute drive? Yes. 30 minute? Maybe. 1 Hour? Maybe. Don Antonio […]

Awesome pizza in Naples, and an outpost in NYC! Why did we dine here? – Pizzeria Starita is a legendary pizza place in Naples, Italy, established in 1901. We were here to explore the origins of Neapolitan pizza and had to give this legendary place a visit. This restaurant has an outpost New York City for those closer to NY than Italy. Being major fans of pizza, dining at an authentic place like Starita was a pilgrimage. They charge 1.50 Coperti fee per person. The place is heavily air conditioned, which was nice considering it was 90+ degrees outside. Insider Tip – Go early to avoid the lines. Visit the nearby Archeology museum before hand. Cuisine – Napoli Location – Naples, Italy Opened – 1901 Service – Pizzeria Starita had good service with a friendly waiter who spoke English and helped guide us to the most popular dishes. Verdict – Pizzeria Starita helped us understand what real pizza in Naples tastes like. We now understand what an authentic Margherita Pizza looks and tastes like. Any foodie that is a pizza fan needs to make a pilgrimage to Naples. Da Michele is another shrine to pizza in Naples, but much more […]

Best pizza in the world? Why did we dine here? – Da Michele is a legendary pizza place in Naples, Italy, established way back in 1870. We were here to explore the origins of Neapolitan pizza and had to give this legendary place a visit. Being major fans of pizza, dining at an authentic Restaurant like Da Michele was a pilgrimage. The recent book Eat, Pray, Love mention this place. Instead of waiting in line for a table, we decided to go inside and order a pizza to go. This is considerably faster. Insider Tip – Go early to avoid the lines. Take the Rick Steves Naples walk, it ends near Da Michele Cuisine – Napoli Location – Naples, Italy Opened – 1870 Service – Da Michele had reasonable service. The pizzas come out fast and they are used to serving a ton of people. Verdict – Da Michele serves up a stellar authentic experience that every pizza fanatic needs to try. We preferred the Margherita from Pizzeria Starita in Naples, but either is far superior to what we have in the San Francisco Bay Area. The closest pizza to this version would be Una Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco. […]
