Last Update: 12/31/2021 Foodie research and reviews from many visits to beautiful Maui with the last in 2021. We are based in San Francisco, so our base reference for dining is fairly high. This page has links to reviews of spots we heartily recommend, quick reviews of casual restaurants, and a list of research material we will use for future trips to paradise! We removed several restaurants that did not survive the Pandemic. In late 2021, we found it hard to score reservations to dine inside, hence a lot of takeout. Our goal was to find: Good eats at reasonable prices Primarily restaurants where locals go Local Hawaiian Food We have no interest cuisine that is done better at home in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is challenging on an expensive island full of pricey tourist traps. Formal Reviews of Recommended Restaurants We like these spots enough to give them more detail. Honu Seafood & Pizza, Lahaina

Why did we dine here? – Honu Seafood & Pizza one of those waterfront restaurants that has a killer view of the sunset. Prices are no doubt inflated, but it was our last day in paradise, so we decided to splurge. Be sure to ask what is local. Cuisine – Hawaiian Location – Lahaina, Maui Verdict – Honu impressed us with decent food, we expected far less. Price are very high. Honu Seafood had average service with long pauses, from a nice waitress. Wish the service would match the prices. Honu Seafood Food Picks: Butternut Squash Coconut Soup 20yr balsamic, coconut (vegan) ($14 large) was a decent soup with a strong balsamic floating on top. Dungeness Crab Mac & Cheese, bechamel, black truffle cheese, white truffle oil, garlic ($38) is a signature dish. Huge dish full of decadent mac & cheese with a nice truffle odor. 10oz Ribeye All Natural C.A.B. fingerling potatoes, vegetable medley, malaysian steak sauce ($43) is from a local ranch on the Island. Merrimans, Kapalua Maui

Why did we dine here? – Merrimans is a popular restaurant on Maui, perfectly situated on the coast by the beautiful Kapalua Beach. It is well reviewed and we were playing at the beach next door, so it was high time to try this place. This restaurant also has locations on the Big Island, and Kauai. The same owner runs the more casual Monkeypod Kitchen. See our: Maui Restaurant Review roundup. We came during happy hour in our attempt to mitigate the damage to the wallet this place will induce. Frankly happy hour is not great here, the only sale items are a couple drinks, no food discounts. There is a limited food menu back here. The saving grace, Happy hour (3-459pm daily) is located on the patio in the back, with an absolutely killer view of the ocean and beach. If you do not have reservation, go back there and enjoy yourself.
