Why did we dine here? – Samwon Garden is a long standing Korean BBQ restaurant in Seoul. It opened in 1976 and serves traditional Korean dishes with an emphasis on BBQ. We had to try a restaurant like this to see what authentic Korean BBQ is. We asked a leading Seoul food blogger which of the famous high end joints we should dine at and he recommended Samwon Garden. Insider Tip – Bring a big wallet. Cuisine – Korean BBQ Location – Seoul Opened – 1976 This restaurant is very large, with several dining areas as well as an outside courtyard where a drum performance was staged. The air inside Samwon Garden reminded us of several Korean restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area, smokey with limited venting. Service – Samwon Garden had fair service, we expected a lot more. There were long pauses and they really didn’t come around to check on you very much. Verdict – Samwon Garden satisfied our need to dine at a traditional Korean BBQ restaurant. While we were not impressed by some of the food, it was a good experience nonetheless. In the future, we would probably try less expensive Korean BBQ restaurants. Diners […]

Why did we dine here? – Song Jook Heon is a classic hanjeongsik, or traditional Korean restaurant. This restaurant is located across the street from the secret garden of Changdeok Palace. This meal is pre-designed by the chef and can include up to 30 dishes. The food served here originated in royal palaces of ancient Korea. With the popularity of Korean soap operas, more people are being introduced to this type of meal. We noticed another room had a bunch of businessmen and some female accompaniment. We were given a private room with a minimal amount of furniture, and the food just starting coming. The people there spoke very little English. We asked them about several dishes and got no correct response. Below are some pictures of the items we received. Many items were a mystery to us. Scary but fun! Stand out dishes were: abalone, steamed pork, hot duck patty, and bulgogi. Typical dishes include: several kinds of Kimchi, steamed pork, grilled abalone with pan-fried ginkgo berries, japchae noodles, hodo root, totovivo, salmon salad, hot duck patties with a hint of ginger, and codfish dumplings with an egg white foam, bulgogi, pickled garlic, jeotgal and jangahjji or salted fish […]
