They focus on Jamaican classics like Jerk Chicken. Some cool Steel drum live music was playing on our 2009 visit, by 2016, the place was so loud on a Friday night, you could not hear much. Its chef also runs the cult classic Back-A-yard restaurant in Menlo Park. Decor, Vibe – Coconuts Caribbean has a Quirky colorful interior with lots of colorful artwork. Bar area with counter seating, outdoor patio for Sunnier days. The place was packed with families, nearby locals, friends getting together, mostly folks in their 30’s to 40’s. Coconuts Caribbean Menu Pictures Website Coconuts Caribbean Menu Interestingly prices have increased only slightly from 2009 to 2015. Prices here are pretty reasonable, considering how expensive other places are, around the corner. Coconuts Caribbean Food Picks: Soup of the day Spinach, Okra, Pork ($2.75 cup) was very good. An interesting green colored combination of zesty flavors. Jerk Chicken and Tender braised oxtail ($16.95) was a great combination. Traditional Jerk chicken was very juicy and tender. Oxtail falls off the bone and is flavored perfectly. Good rice and beans too. Could have used […]

We’ve been to most of them and find them pretty good. This review concentrates on dinner. The food here is pretty authentic Chinese Cantonese food, so some may not like this type of more hardcore cuisine. Do not come here for General’s Chicken or Broccoli Beef. Another review covers The Kitchen dim sum lunch. Our last visit for dinner was in 2015, a meal where we found that their quality has improved. We’d consider this #2 behind Koi Palace. The Kitchen has recently remodeled the dining room, making it much more open, spacious, and modern. Be sure to read our article How to order in authentic Chinese dinner Decor-Vibe – The Kitchen, Millbrae is a typical busy and noisy Chinese restaurant with lots of families and friends eating together. Come early or make a reservation, as this place is pretty busy. Almost all people were of Asian descent. Like many Chinese restaurants, the bathroom is not very clean.

Downtown San Mateo has a very high concentration of Japanese restaurants with one on almost every block. Hotaru is one of the best and most economical. No surprise, there is a line out front most of the time. We’ve tried pretty much all the nearby Japanese restaurants. Sushi Sam and Kisaku are also good but more expensive. Nearby Yuzu and Sakae are also very good Japanese Restaurants. Our last visit was in 2016. Decor, Vibe – Hotaru is a cramped small place with lots of people inside and people waiting outside. Families, couples, small groups eating together. There is a line out the door much of the time. Hotaru Menu Pictures: (Click to zoom in on any picture) To Go Menu Hotaru’s Menu has Sushi, Sashimi, Teriyaki, Rolls, and appetizers. They have it all. Be sure to look at the specials and additions that are only on the wall. Prices are reasonable. Maguro, Shiro Maguro, Ebi, Unagi, Tako, Inari, Tamago, and Tekkyu are all accounted for. We found their fish […]
