We’re also big Porchetta fans, so this made it an easy decision. We selected the location right near downtown Portland, within walking distance of our hotel and that bookstore to end all bookstores, Powell’s. They have 3 locations to serve your pig-out needs. Chefs Table Group also owns Ox, Grassa Next Door, and several other well respected restaurants in Portland. The restaurant is not huge and was packed. You had to fight to get a seat. Insider Tip – Be prepared to workoff all the grease! Cuisine – American Location – Downtown West Portland Opened – 2010 Service – Lardo is an order at the counter, get a number and the food delivered kind of place. Everything was fast and efficient, using folks with good attitudes. Verdict – Lardo impressed us with their meaty offerings. It reminded us of one foodie’s rant: is there any bad food in Portland? (Voodoo Donuts!) If you are a fellow burger or porchetta aficionado, make sure you come here. The prices are a steal, and portion sizes are […]

It definitely has a great repuation, and is situated in the midst of a ton of tourist traps. Foodies regularly recommend this restaurant, so we had high hopes. This place fills up fast, so you need to make reservations ahead of time or have to sit at the bar. Insider Tip – Make reservations or sit at the bar. Stick to the top items we list. Cuisine – American Location – Lahaina, Maui Opened – 1990 Service – Lahaina Grill has well dressed waitress, who was very professional and knew the menu well. She wasn’t as present as we would expect in a high end place. Verdict – While Lahaina Grill does serve up very good food, we were not wow’d enough to enthusiastically recommend the place. This is a touristy spot for sure. Prices are on the high side too. If you are visiting from a city that lacks high end cuisine, you would probably love this place. They are a bit behind the time with modern cuisine and we didn’t feel that the food had […]

Why did we dine here? – Cavalier is a British style restaurant in downtown San Francisco from Anna Weinberg, James Nicholas and Chef Jennifer Puccio, owners of the restaurants Marlowe and Park Tavern. They’ve done a great job in the past, so it was time to give their latest venture a try. This restaurant is next door to the San Francisco Centre Shopping Complex, making it very convenient. Chef Puccio was present when we dined here for lunch. The interiors deep red color scheme with lots of conservative wood, sets the scene. This hotel / restaurant has the weirdest bathroom divider we have ever seen. A dark brown see-through glass separates the men’s and women’s bathroom. There is space around it for sound to travel. We kept hearing voices from somewhere and were wondering if someone was hiding in the bathroom. Surreal. Insider Tip – Lunch is less costly than dinner. Cuisine – British American Pub Location – Downtown San Francisco Opened – 2013 Service – Cavalier was professional but at times not very present. He did help us navigate the menu and order the better dishes. Hopefully this will be addressed. Verdict – Cavalier still has some growing pains. […]

Why did we dine here? – Roosevelt Cookout is a fun activity in Yellowstone National Park. You can ride a horse or take a horse drawn carriage to a old west, all you an eat dinner cookout. The cooks work in an outdoor location and serve up real cowboy food. You also get real cowboy coffee that has been cooked over an open campfire. Entertainment includes live music complete with fun jokes. We had a great time, even though the food was average, and recommend visitors try this. All-you-can-eat coleslaw, potato salad, baked beans, chuck wagon corn, corn muffins, watermelon, and fruit crisp. Vegetarians can be accommodated. Lemonade, ice tea, sodas, and cowboy coffee. $79.90 for adults, $69.38 for kids Insider Tip – Make reservation for the 1 or 2 hour horse ride at least several months in advance. This only runs during summer. Cuisine – American Location – Yellowstone National Park Service – Roosevelt Cookout was strictly a help yourself to food affair. The workers were fun and made the experience better. Verdict – Roosevelt Cookout is a must do if you come to visit Yellowstone National Park. The steak is average (it was precooked and then just warmed […]

Why did we dine here? – Paul Martin’s American Grill is a new restaurant chain from the P in PF Chang’s. This new dining establishment open in San Mateo’s Hillsdale Mall in July 2013. They have a location in Roseville as well as 3 in southern California. Normally hearing the above would cause us to run, but we were nearby, so we gave it a go. This restaurants focus is on local, seasonal, delicious. The interior is beautiful as is the padio outside. It will be interesting to see how a chain restaurant can serve local dishes in disparate locations. Insider Tip – Give them time to gel. Cuisine – American Location – San Mateo Opened – July 2013 Service – Paul Martin’s American Grill had just opened recently, so we didn’t expect any miracles. It was clear that they had a lot of servers running around. The kitchen was still working on pacing. Verdict – Paul Martin’s American Grill served us a pretty decent meal in a dynamic environment. The food was better than expected, but not cheap. This is probably the best food option at this mall now! There aren’t many local, seasonal, places in San Mateo, so […]
