Plant based cuisine satisfying even Carnivores. Why did we dine here? – Shizen Vegan Sushi Bar & Izakaya has remarkable 4.5 stars on Yelp. With the plant based revolution booming, we just had to try this spot. We’ve returned a couple times.. Must go for vegans and vegetarians. They started offering takeout during the pandemic. Our last visit was in Early 2026. . Service has slipped with almost a rush you in and out attitude. You need to reserve a week in advance to the day on Yelp reservation. They are the sister restaurant to Tane Vegan Izakaya with locations in Palo Alto, Berkeley, and Honolulu. We still like this better than Tane Palo Alto. Shizen was created as an experiment in ocean conservation through responsible dining. They’ve been doing this for a while and have drawn folks in consistently. Insider Tip – Reserve in advance. Cuisine – Japanese, Vegan Location – San Francisco Mission District Opened – 2015 Service – Shizen had far better service than we could envision. The restaurant is small and hectic. No linger time! Nice menu recommendations and the food came fast. Verdict – Shizen blew us away. We did […]

Follow our journey and learn from our experiences over several trips. Here is a compilation of more casual restaurants, snack places we visited during our 2016, 2017, 2019, 2023-2024 New York City trips. Our goal was to find good eats at reasonable prices, primarily restaurants where locals go. We have no interest sampling cuisine that is done better at home in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is challenging on an expensive ‘island’, full of pricey tourist traps. Food that is better in New York than in San Francisco Pizza Bagels Italian Sichuan Ethnic food – African, South American, etc.. Our Trip includes visits to Brooklyn, Flushing. It has been hotly anticipated as there are no such restaurants in this area. We had to previously drive to SF or Palo Alto to get quality vegetarian food. We have dined here multiple times with the last at the end of 2025. In late 2025 we felt the restaurant slipped. The menu was more mainstream with faux burgers and more, the place was pretty empty on a Sunday night and service sucked. They added a bakery, Twelvemonth Bakehouse that is open Thursday – Saturday 8am – Noon. Lots of plant based items you do not see elsewhere! Be sure to check out our review of Encanto, Lisbon for the best vegetarian restaurant we’ve been to. Also Eleven Madison Park, New York for the best vegetarian restaurant in the USA. Insider Tip – Make reservations Cuisine – American Vegan Location – Downtown Burlingame Opened – 2023 The interior is tastefully redone from the previous brewery days and full of unique custom touches. Beautiful separate bar area. Large outdoor patio for when the weather gets better. The Twelvemonth menu is fairly concise, with several clearly market […]

Why did we dine here? – Wildseed’s motto is Work out, Veg Out. A trendy new 100% plant based vegan (No eggs!) restaurant in the Union street shopping district from the Back of the House Group (a Mano, Lolinda, Delarosa, Beretta, Super Duper, etc). They also have a location in Palo Alto’s Town and Country Center. We have dined at both locations. Also check out our review of BAIA vegan restaurant in Hayes Valley. Our #1 Vegetarian restaurant is Encanto in Portugal Perfect spot for the crowds that the Marina is known for. (I reminisce about Prego that was in this spot in the 90’s!) The restaurant was fairly new and already packed. Summary – Wildseed’s food did not leave us wanted a steak afterwards. Hearty and satisfying. The service rushed us along on one visit, the other one had sluggish service. Save money by eating in the bar during happy hour. Insider Tip – Go for Happy Hour Cuisine – Vegan Location – San Francisco Union Street Opened – 2019 Food Picks: I GOT UBE Cocktail ($14) rum, cachaça, banana liqueur, lime, coconut milk was way too sweet and not even purple. Their Marin based Green Gulch Farm provides much of the produce. Greens was a pioneer in the early days, nowadays we have many more plant centric restaurants like Wildseed, Baia, Shizen, etc. Today almost every fancy restaurant accommodates vegetarians to some degree. The menu changes all the time. Our last visit was in the Summer of 2022 during the Pandemic. They had added a nice outdoor seating area as well as takeout. Decor, Vibe – Most tables have a stunning view of the San Francisco Marina’s harbor and the Golden Gate Bridge. (Outside dining doesn’t) The dining room has a mish mash of paintings, wood, and sculpture looking almost unchanged for decades. There were a lot of folks in their 30’s to 50’s dining. A fair amount of green hippies. Greens Menu Different lunch, brunch, and dinner menus. Lots of starter options as well as a good selection of big plates. The menu changes all the time but usually has some pizza and pasta dish. Everything clearly marked, gluten free, vegan, vegan possible. 6% healthy SF Mandate. Website Menu Food Picks: Pinot Noir & Hibiscus Spritz Lemon, Calisaia Bitters ($14) tastes […]
