Where does a San Francisco Foodie eat in Vancouver? Some damn good Chinese food here. Follow our journey and learn from our experiences. Last Visit: 7/30/25 Dynasty Seafood Restaurant 108-777 W Broadway Vancouver, BC V5Z 1J5 (604) 876-8388 https://dynasty-restaurant.ca Dynasty Seafood Restaurant is a popular Cantonese restaurant in Vancouver. We selected it from the vast array of choices due to its solid reviews and proximity to our hotel. Rated 4.2 on Google with over 2100 reviews. The restaurant is not big. Calling in for reservations is wise during peak hours and days. Dynasty is listed in the Michelin guide. Dim Sum Menu was only 2 pages long during lunch. Pretty traditional fare without a lot of innovation or Instagrammable focus. Several larger dishes were also available. Icons are next to signature dishes. Prices are not cheap, but considering how busy it was – reasonable for this type of spot. They do not have roast meats like roast duck or char siu. The food was made with precision and food quality was very good. A notch below San Francisco area’s best HL Peninsula and of course Hong Kong. Service was very good with servers trying hard and being very courteous, not […]

We visited the Granville Public Market in Vancouver, BC and found it to be a must visit for foodies to visit, but not as spectacular as San Francisco’s ferry building, Beijing’s Dong Hua Men market or London’s Borough market. The network of small vendors and gift shops almost overshadowed the food area for us. Here are some of the more memorable sights:

Sun Sui Wah Seafood Restaurant is a popular Chinese restaurant in Vancouver. This restaurant is mentioned and most tour books and best of articles. It is located about 2 miles south of Vancouver’s Chinatown and it opened in the 1980s. Decor, Vibe – Sun Sui Wah Seafood Restaurant has very nice decor with an open airy room, elegant seating, hand decorated of parachute like fabrics dangling from the ceiling. The place was filled with locals and courts alike with a good balance of races. Waiting starts around 11 AM on the weekends. Menu (Click to zoom into any picture) Sun Sui Wah Seafood Restaurant Menu has a wide selection of classic dim sum items as well as noodle dishes. They even let us order squab during lunch. Painless ordering by checking a box. There were also some dishes that circulate the room. Website Sun Sui Wah Seafood Restaurant Menu Sun Sui Wah Seafood Restaurant Full image set Picks: Steamed prawn dumpling or har gow ($4.20) were four very large and piping hot dumplings of decent quality. Steamed spareribs in black bean sauce ($3.75) were a solid rendition, very high on quantity, no noodles underneath, and decent flavor. Shrimp and pea […]

Blue Water Cafe and Raw Bar is as they put it “City’s definitive destination for seafood”. Our goal was to eat local food that defined Vancouver. Executive Chef Frank Pabst is known for his innovative and brilliantly executed West Coast plates, insisting on using seafood from wild and sustainable harvest. At the raw bar, cut master Yoshi Tabo has his own dedicated following for his expert sushi and sashimi. We had eaten at their sister restaurant, Araxi, in Whistler a couple days before our dinner here. Blue Water Cafe is located in the trendy Yale town district, which literally has restaurant after restaurant on each block. Decor, Vibe – Blue Water Cafe and Raw Bar is a busy, loud, and energetic restaurant. Big open kitchen, sushi bar across the room, and a large bar up front. Exposed pipes, bricks, and open feeling room. Well-dressed folks, loud bass heavy music, upscale crowd.

Kirin Mandarin is a well-respected Chinese restaurant in downtown Vancouver, which is named after a mythical dragon like monster. They have five locations in the greater Vancouver area. This particular location focuses on Northern Chinese cuisine and opened in 1987. Sherman recommended we visit this restaurant. Dim Sum Lunch is covered separately. Decor, Vibe – Kirin Mandarin is located in any atrium of an office building. The decor is modern and corporate with elegant seating and lighting. The majority of folks were Asians, but there was a healthy mix of other races. We noted how much nicer people dress here than in the San Francisco Bay Area! Menu (Click to zoom into any picture) Kirin Mandarin Menu has an extensive menu with a wide variety of items. We ordered a super good value Special set menu that was only in Chinese. Website Kirin Mandarin Menu Kirin Mandarin Full image set Picks: $45 per person Set Menu included the following items: Appetizers (preserved vegetables / Shredded Chicken with Jelly Fish / Smoked Salmon) was a nice starter cold dish of salt sea vegetables balanced out with the tame jellyfish.

We recently visited the greater Vancouver area. This week we feature reviews from our neighbor to the north. Japadog is a legendary hot dog cart located in downtown Vancouver, BC, Canada. It was featured on the Olympics, Anthony Bourdain, etc. We just had to hit such a Touristy cult spot. Decor, Vibe – Japadog is just a glorified hot dog cart pictures all over it, and lines of fellow crazy people. Tourists and lots of locals were in line. Apparently the lines for even longer during weekday lunch hours. Menu (Click to zoom into any picture) Japadog Menu has several types of Japanese style hot dogs with various toppings and meats. Menu gets updated from time to time. Website Japadog Menu Full Image Set Picks: Okonomi ($6.25) with Kurobuta pork hot dog, Bonito flakes, fried cabbage, Japanese mayo, and special Okonomiyaki sauce was a good sized hotdog smothered with ingredients. The mayo has little flavor has dipped and fried cabbage. They just help balance out the meatiness. Excellent bun. Kurobuta Terimayo ($6.75) with the same hotdog, fried onions, nori seaweed flakes, and teriyaki sauce was also a very good hotdog. A sauce made it messy and slightly overwhelmed the hotdog.
