We love Thai food and find some of the best in Thailand. We recently finished up our latest culinary tour in 2026 visiting: Bangkok Koi Samui Chiang Mai The Thai food was superior to that in the San Francisco Bay Area and much cheaper. The service is at some restaurants another level here. Here are some quick mini reviews of places we ate at, so you can understand how Thai food compares, and so you select the best places on your visit. We have full reviews for places we deemed important enough. Follow our journey and learn from our experiences. Here is a compilation of more casual restaurants, snack places we visited during our 2020 Asia trip. Our goal was to find good eats at reasonable prices, primarily restaurants where locals go. We have no interest sampling cuisine that is done better at home in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is challenging on an expensive ‘island’, full of pricey tourist traps. Useful Websites Michelin Guide Open Rice Our Trip includes visits to Restaurants Snack Shops and more Food Focus: Chicken Rice Local Cuisine Phuket Thailand The restaurant scene here is very chaotic and touristy. It is hard to find true foodie quality restaurants. We went to top rated Trip advisor spots and found them fair at best. It is listed in the Lonely Planet tour book so it is pretty popular. We found the food pretty average though. There does not seem to be any real food restaurant in this area, just a bunch of tourist […]

Our original restaurant pick, Blackitch, was full, so our hotel concierge suggested this spot. Boy was he spot on. This was the best meal we had in Thailand. The restaurant is located in a posh hotel that costs US$700 a night and is rated at almost 100% on Trip Advisor. The menu does not do this place justice (it sounds so simplistic), everything is kicked up a notch. We stuck to the signature dishes. The only thing not up to par was the service. As the place got more busy, the service fell off. The dining room appeared to be all well heeled tourists. You need to reserve in advance. Before eating at this restaurant, we wondered if there would be Thai food better than San Francisco! Prices are not cheap, but still cheap than San Francisco! Highly recommended Food Picks: Amuse Tom Yum Goong (380 baht) Spicy prawn soup, straw mushrooms, flavored with lemongrass took the classic dish to a new level. 3 huge tiger prawns in a robust flavored soup with lots of quality ingredients. Unlike any Tom Yum we have had! 9/10 Gaeng Hung Lay Gae (590) Northern dry curry, slow […]
