Why did we dine here? – Brown Sugar Kitchen is run by Tanya Holland, who draws upon her African-American heritage and her formal culinary training from France. This restaurant is located in an industrial part of Oakland, not far from Emeryville. We happened to be in the area and had this legendary place on our hit list. Our meal was for lunch on a weekday, so the wait was short. This place is packed during the weekends for breakfast. Insider Tip – Get here early to avoid the crowds. Cuisine – Southern Soul Food Location – West Oakland Opened – 2010 Service – Brown Sugar Kitchen does not have very many servers, so there was some delay in getting our order taken, though food came fairly quick. Verdict – Brown Sugar Kitchen is extremely popular and no surprise due to its high food quality and fun vibe. We look forward to visiting their sister restaurant B Side BBQ. Brown Sugar Kitchen Signature Dishes – Chicken and waffles, Oyster Po Boy. Brown Sugar Kitchen’s Menu is fairly short with the flagship dish, some BBQ items, and a couple specials.
