Sichuan Impression in Tustin, Orange County is the second outpost of the spicy restaurant, the others are in Alhambra and Los Angeles. We at in the LA one near UCLA in 2019. This location is located in a plain jane strip mall near Highway 5. It was recommended to us as probably the top Sichuan restaurant in the OC. Also checkout our review of nearby J Zhou, Tustin for dim sum. A nice looking interior and very good food make this a no brainer for fans of Sichuan Cuisine. The waiters speak English and there are lots of pictures on the menu. Service: Pretty typical Chinese restaurant service. Drop and go, flag for bill, etc. Waiter did help us select dishes. Menu: Some of the names on the menu are hilarious: Impressive Sausage, Street Corner Potato Strips, Toothpick mutton. Come on guys! The menu is pretty wide ranging but clearly focused on spicy Sichuan food. Food Picks: Green Tea with red dates and logan drink ($4.99) was a common drink on other tables, so we had to try it. A hot drink with strong date flavor. Honey Ice Tea ($3.99) was more of […]

Hot Stuff! Why did we dine here? – Chili House is a Chinese restaurant in the SF Richmond district. It is special because in November 2015, Tong Gang Wang became the chef at Chili House. He has cooked for several Presidents in China. This is a sister restaurant to Z&Y Sichuan restaurant in SF’s Chinatown. With the new chef, there is more Beijing food on the menu, like hand-pulled noodles, Beijing pot stickers and lamb hot pot. This restaurant reminds us of China Village in Albany. Insider Tip – Go early so they do not run out of the Peking duck Cuisine – Chinese Sichuan – Beijing Location – Inner Richmond District, San Francisco Opened – 2012 Service – Chili House had pretty standard Chinese restaurant drop and go. You have to flag them down. Verdict – Chili House has some hits and some misses. If you like spicy food or Peking duck, give it a try. Is this restaurant worth a 5 minute drive? Yes. 30 minute? Maybe. 1 Hour? No. Chili House Signature Dishes – Water boiled fish, Peking Duck Chili House’s Menu is pretty standard. Stick to the Sichuan, Beijing dishes.

Why did we dine here? – Fey Restaurant recently opened in Menlo Park. It has gotten positive buzz, so we decided to give it a try. The owner has owned many different Sichuan Chinese restaurants including Little Sichuan in San Mateo and Classic Sichuan in Millbrae. She has built up a fan base and hopefully has found a restaurant that has some staying power. The restaurant features somewhat neo-classical lighting and decor, probably from China. They have a small parking lot in the back, so you might have to park on El Camino Real. Insider Tip – Stick to the Sichuan items with a star on the menu. Cuisine – Chinese Sichuan Location – Menlo Park Opened – 2013 Service – Fey Restaurant was overwhelmed the Saturday we went. They didn’t have enough servers and the kitchen was extremely slow. Hopefully they will add resources as they expand. Verdict – Fey Restaurant impressed us with quality Sichuan Chinese food in elegant surroundings. With more customers, they should be able address their service woes and become one of the better Sichuan restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Crouching Tiger Restaurant is a Chinese Sichuan, Hunan, and Mandarin style restaurant in downtown Redwood City on a Street full of different restaurants. Their name in Chinese is really Crouching Dragon. They specialize is spicy dishes, noodles, and authentic local dishes like Xingjian Lamb and Pickle Fish soup. Our last visit was in October 2011. Decor, Vibe – Crouching Tiger has a very modern, dimly lit, clean interior with many flat screens and digital picture frames. We wish more Chinese restaurants would have this level of decor. Nice mix with half of the folks Asian, the other half Caucasians. Families, large parties, couples were at dinner. Crouching Tiger Menu Pictures (Click to zoom into any picture) Crouching Tiger has a classic Chinese restaurant menu with all sorts of dishes spanning multiple types of cuisine. We focused on the Sichuan dishes that they really specialize in. Website Crouching Tiger Menu Picks: Dry Cooked shredded lamb ($10.50) was deep fried and came with lots of jalapenos and other chilies, making this pretty spicy. An excellent dish for those that like heat. Beijing eggplant ($7.50) was a beautiful dish with lots of shiny eggplant. The dish also included chopped up tomato that was […]
