San Mateo Prime restaurant opened in late 2007 in Downtown San Mateo. They specialize in dry aged prime rib cooked with rock salt and slowly roasted. We have driven by many times and decided it was time for a prime rib dinner. San Mateo Prime is modeled after places like House of Prime Rib in San Francisco and Lawry’s The Prime Rib. Entrees come with hot corn bread, salad, popover, and choice of two side dishes.
Spiedo Restaurant is located in downtown San Mateo, across the street from Draegar’s supermarket. The restaurant, open in 1991, specializes in fine Italian cuisine and Daily Specials from the Venitian region. Their sister restaurants are Porterhouse San Mateo and Agave Viejo.
Pho Miss Saigon is an inexpensive Vietnamese noodle place in downtown San Mateo. You can order a bowl of noodles and have them in 5 minutes, making this a good alternative to fast food.
Shiki Japanese Restaurant is located in the San Mateo Whole Food shopping center, just off Highway 101. They have 2 other locations. They have an extensive menu with items from sushi to noodles to rice bowls. We tried them for dinner.
Oidon is a small, almost hidden Japanese restaurant above the Suruki Supermarket in downtown San Mateo.
