Stella formerly known as Stella Alpina Osteria is a small Italian restaurant located a block from the main Burlingame Avenue shopping area. Located below ground level, most people would never know it was here. The restaurant opened in May 2005, and was featured on PBS’ Check Please TV show. They moved to Burlingame Avenue into a much larger location. Our last visit was in Summer 2026. Stella, which serves Northern Italian cuisine from the Alps, is on the basement level of a commercial building and has some patio seating for warmer nights. They specialize in braised meats, risottos, pastas and ragus. Decor, Vibe – Stella is has nice paintings on the walls. Not too fancy compared to restaurant in the City. Mostly older folks in their 40’s and beyond were dining. Stella Menu is pretty wide ranging with the usual Italian restaurant menu containing many Antipasti, Secondi, pasta, entrees, and other dishes. The menu had not changed a lot except for prices! Signature Dishes – Veal Osso Buco over Mascarpone Polenta, Gnocchi, Salmon Services was friendly and solid but the waiter was overloaded and never refilled us and had to be flagged down. We were passing by and decided to finally give it a try. Without reservations, we dined at the bar. Pacing was way off, but the food was fabulous. Definitely want to try more next time! We came back for lunch in Spring 2019 and found the food just as good. Michelin The Plate Rated for 2019. Be sure to check out the Amazon 4 star store nearby. They carry only top rated items. Pretty cool and only of 3 in the USA. Food Picks: Sendai Mule ($14) bulleit bourbon, cocchi americano, yuzu, ginger beer is their take on a Moscow Mule. A bit too much ice, but a nice balanced drink. Hidden potency. Japanese Mojito ($12) ikkomon shochu, shiso, yuzu, simple syrup, sparkling water is a nice variation of the classic with lots of yuzu flavor. ORGANIC ICHIBA SALAD ($10) mizuna / baby kale / cherry tomato / radish / apple / tamari-yuzu vinaigrette was fabulous. A nice balance of sweet and savory. Get it if you are vegetarian. BACON MOCHI ($13.50) crispy nori seaweed / grilled mochi & smoked bacon / housemade teriyaki is a bit chewy […]

Why did we dine here? – Wonderful food at great prices. La Viga derives from the massive central seafood market in Mexico City where our chef Manuel Martinez (Left Bank, Reposado) comes from. They focus food with local sustainable ingredients and draw a huge crowd. This restaurant has a high 4.5 rating on Yelp from almost 1000 reviewers. A friend tipped us off. We dined at La Viga during dinner, around 7pm. The place was packed and there was a line out the door. The restaurant was very loud, not just loud. Keep this in mind when dining here. Not exactly a great relaxing, romantic dinner, but the food is very good. Insider Tip – Come early, make reservations via Yelp Cuisine – Latin – Mexican – Peruvian Location – Redwood City Opened – 2012 Service – La Viga had better service than you would expect from a small restaurant tucked away on a non descript street. The food came fast although pacing was not there. Verdict – La Viga is one of those gems that services food far superior than you would expect. Prices are reasonable, so a strong following has developed. We ordered way too much food and […]
