We recently finished up our culinary tour of Rome in the Summer of 2012. It was interesting to see how authentic Italian food and restaurants in Rome compare to the ones we have in the San Francisco Bay Area. Below are several Roman restaurants we dined at. Il Convivio Troiani This one Michelin Star fine dining restaurant is located not far from the awesome Piazza Navona. We picked it due to its proximity and positive reviews. The food and service here are excellent. Portion sizes are on the high side, so try to split portions or order one course at a time. They have no concept of doggie bags in Rome! This quiet, romantic restaurant was a nice oasis away from all the tourists. Hits: Four kinds of excellent homemade bread. Better than we could purchase outside. Fried zucchini flowers with buffalo’s mozzarella, anchovy fillets, ‘scorzone’ black truffle & sweet and sour red peppers sorbet (€28) – Recommended by the waiter, this thick battered, deep fried delight was accompanied with some potent red peppers. Risotto with ‘burrata’ cheese, porcini mushrooms, lemon scented snails Bourguignonne style (spiced butter sauce) & ‘scorzone’ black truffle (€32) – Possessed mild truffle scents, rich flavors, […]

Located in the Rome Cavalieri Hotel, This restaurant has a legendary wine cellar with over 53,000 bottles. We noticed a wine from 1888 that cost €29,000! They have a water menu with a staggering 29 choices! All with descriptions of where the water was from and its highlights. Heinz Beck is the well respected chef. The decor of this restaurant is stunning, with fine paintings, porcelain, and elegant furniture. Walking into this hotel, makes you feel like you have been transported to the 1970’s. Insider Tip – Make reservation well in advance. Try to get a table outside. Go easy on dessert as there are many freebies. Cuisine – Modern Italian Location – Rome Opened – 1994 Service – La Pergola had beyond excellent service with lots of suggestions, refills, and beyond the call of duty help. This is one of the strong suits here. Verdict – La Pergola serves up excellent food in a beautiful dining room with a stellar view. The service and environment clearly […]

Why did we dine here? – Pipero Al rex was recommended to us by Rome expert, Katy Parla and proved to be one of our most memorable meals in Rome. This restaurant has only been open since October, 2011 and has caused favorable reaction in the Foodie world. This small gem had only six tables. Modern, restrained decor with lots of cool touches including a stylish water pitcher, burgundy leather curved seats and chandelier. Insider Tip – Make reservations Cuisine – Modern Roman Location – Near Termini Train Station Opened – October, 2011 Service – Pipero Al rex had excellent service. This compact restaurant had an enthusiastic server who helped us navigate the menu. No worries with regard to refills, napkin folding when we were gone, or special requests. Verdict – Pipero Al rex surprised us with stellar food and service. We can easily recommend this restaurant to foodies seeking top notch food in Rome. Pipero Al rex Signature Dishes – Raw duck, mustard and apple cream. Spaghetti, Garlic, olive oil and fish sauce.
