They have been serving up pretty authentic Mandarin dishes for many years. Old Mandarin is an Islamic restaurant that does not serve pork and sticks to Halal certified meats. Our last visit was about seven years ago, so we were eager to rekindle our fond memories during the summer of 2021 during the Pandemic for Take out. Insider Tip – This restaurant is tiny, so come early or late Cuisine – Chinese Mandarin Location – San Francisco, Outer Sunset District Opened – 2001 Service – Old Mandarin Islamic Restaurant is a pretty small restaurant, with about 10 tables, so servers don’t have a lot of excuses not to deliver quality service. Their service was solid but not outstanding. Verdict – Old Mandarin Islamic Restaurant is a solid bet for people seeking this type of authentic cuisine. It is worth the journey if you like Mandarin Chinese cuisine, especially lamb dishes. The prices have risen over the years. What’s new? Signature Dishes – Hot Pot, lamb dishes, dumplings, Warm Pot. Old Mandarin Islamic Restaurant’s Menu […]

They brought in a Chef from Village Pub to execute their dream. We had good experiences at Evvia so we decided to give this less formal place a try. Insider Tip – Loud restaurant, so be prepared. Almost out of My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Not for a quiet dinner. Cuisine – American Location – Palo Alto near University Ave Opened – 2018 Service – Taverna had good service for such a small place. Clearly they are trying to keep up a warm cozy family atmosphere. Verdict – Taverna stands out for decent Greek cuisine although prices are not cheap. It is less formal than Evvia although the sound level is quite high. The lamb costs as much as Evvia. Guess they figure that Evvia is so hard to get into, the spillover would come here for more casual cheaper fare.. (Hey its Palo Alto, who said it was inexpensive) Is this restaurant worth a 5 minute drive? Yes. 30 minute? Maybe. 1 Hour?

Why did we dine here? – Shockingly Good! Xian Famous Foods was made famous when Anthony Bourdain featured it on this TV show, No Reservations. The restaurant was recommended to us, so we had to add it to our NYC hit list. They have several locations in New York and Flushing, so we decided to eat at the Chinatown location as we were touring the city. In 2019 we ate at the West Village location. You pretty much look at the menu on the wall, order, pay, then wait for food to make it up a dumbwaiter. The dining room is pretty barebones and small, so be ready to sit next to other fanboys. It is really interesting that this has become an empire, the San Francisco area has no restaurant to rival this one. Insider Tip – Be prepared for a spicy experience. Cuisine – Chinese Location – New York Chinatown Opened – 2011 Service – Xian Famous Foods had a friendly lady who helped us with our order. The food is pretty much like a cafeteria aka fast casual. Verdict – Xian Famous Foods impressed us with fantastic Xian food. The place is very down home, nothing fancy, […]
