La Pinata Mexicatesen is a Salvadorean/Mexican restaurant in San Mateo, near the Caltrain station. It is located in an area that is full of Hispanic businesses and opened in early 2008. Decor, Vibe – Hole in the wall, cafeteria style decor with simple tables and chairs, open kitchen and counter on one side. Large paintings and pictures on the walls. Good racial mix with lots of Hispanics, blending with many other races. Menu (Click to zoom into any picture) La Pinata Mexicatesen Menu serves Breakfast, lunch and dinner. House Specialty Pupusas, Traditional Mexican items, and traditional plates are all covered. The lady taking orders is friendly but speaks very little English. They have real Coke from Mexico! They have free chips and nachos that are pretty forgettable. La Pinata Mexicatesen Full Image Set Picks: Horchata ($2 for regular) was excellent. Very creamy and a bit on the sweet side. One of the better ones we have tasted. Pupusas de maiz (Corn) ($2) are hand made tortillas stuffed with cheese, deep fried pork. Restaurant.com sells discounted Certificates for this restaurant. Cerviche Taqueria is a fairly new family owned Mexican restaurant in San Mateo about a block from the downtown San Mateo Caltrain station. It is located in an area that is more Hispanic oriented. They serve tacos, burritos, quesadillas, dinner plates, as well as hamburgers. Decor, Vibe – Open kitchen in the front with counter seating and a larger dining area in the back. Small salsa bar in the back. Some families and other locals were dining when we visited. Menu (Click to zoom into any picture) Picks: None Ok: Steak and Lobster Quesadilla ($11.95) 9inch tortilla with monterey jack and cheddar cheese and mild salsa was of pretty good size. Flavor was domainted by the mean and its sauce. Could not really taste lobster much until we pulled out some. Not a lot of lobster of course. Cheese flavor also overshadowed. Chicken Burrito ($5.45) Flour tortilla with rice, beans, Cheese & mild salsa was not that large. The chicken was bathed in a gravy sauce, making the insides wet. Not our preferred technique.
