Burger Bar: Build Your Own Ultimate Burgers
– This book is full of Burger Bar insight as well as recipes for making your own awesome burgers.

Burger Bar San Francisco Exterior Decor Macys

Burger Bar San Francisco is Hubert Keller’s gourmet burger joint that opened in October, 2009. He runs the highly respected fine dining Fleur de Lys French restaurant in San Francisco. This restaurant is located on the sixth floor of Macy’s Union Square. We have eaten at the Burger Bar Las Vegas location and could not wait for this one to open. They serve burgers, salads, and sandwiches. You can build your own burger with all sorts of goodies. We avoided the crazy expensive Kobe beef, $60 Rossini foie gras, truffle burger. No sense in overdoing a burger.

We returned in March 2010 and found that quality has increased over our first visit.

Burger Bar San Francisco Fresh Ground Beef

Burger Bar has their own butcher shop that hand mixes prime quality meat daily, so no worries over cheap ground beef.

Burger Bar San Francisco Interior Decor

Decor, Vibe – Burger Bar SF has a beautiful view of Union Square. Sports bar meets a rustic wood laden restaurant with a long bar, booths with LCD TVs. Lots of locals and some tourists were dining with most folks in the 20 to 30 range. Take the Macy’s escalators to the 6th floor or the private elevator when Macy’s is closed. The wait times can get long in the evenings.

Picks:

Burger Bar San Francisco Atlantic Salmon Burger

Atlantic Salmon Sandwich ($12) was a huge sized filet on a ciabatta bun with oyster mushrooms, asparagus, and aioli on the side. Simple, tender, juicy, healthy and delicious. If you don’t eat red meat, try this ‘burger’, you will be surprised how good it is.
Buttermilk zucchini fries ($3.95) were crispy but not very greasy. Nice batter and some fresh zucchini in the middle.

Burger Bar San Francisco Black Angus Beef Burger

Black Angus Beef Burger ($13.75) with American cheese, bacon, grilled onions, and portobello mushrooms was cooked to a slightly more well done medium rare that we would like, making it not very juicy. This was a huge piece of meat. The mushrooms and onions were plentiful and tasty. The sesame bun was big, fresh, and very good.  Stick to one or two toppings to keep it affordable.

American classic ($14.50) had black Angus beef, cheddar cheese, crispy bacon, tomato, onion, on a sesame seed bun. On this occasion they cooked it to a nice medium rare. Flavor was good and patty huge. Big enough to keep us full all afternoon. We noticed some inconsistencies, when Burger was far juicier than the other, and both were cooked to the same wellness.

The onion rings are a better bet but aren’t beer battered like some of the better ones are.

Burger Bar San Francisco Vanilla Shake

Vanilla shake ($7) was a very tall shake with whip creamy and a cherry. Very smooth ice cream, not too sweet, and light whipped cream made it perfect.

Burger Bar San Francisco Chocolate Shake

Chocolate Shake ($7) added a layer of chocolate syrup to the mix. Very chocolaty and velvety. A must get for chocoholics.

OK:
The fat fries ($3.35) were not that fat and pretty standard fare. Slightly over done.

We substituted yam fries for the default skinny fries and found them just fair, and very slender.

Pans:
None

Service was good, with a friendly server and bus boys coming by every so often. Burger Bar SF had some very good burgers that are fully customizable. They round it out with great tasting huge shakes. Prices are on the high side, so value is not the greatest. We have no problem recommending this place for a burger, cold one, and nice view. On a budget? Inexpensive Pearl’s Deluxe Burgers ranks higher burgerwise. They add 3% for healthy San Francisco.

Burger bar San Francisco is very similar to Burger Bar Las Vegas.
