Josephine Chez Dumonet is a popular old school Bistro in the 6th Arrondissement, St. Germain, not far from the Jardin du Luxembourg. It was open in 1898 and is run by 3rd generation Jean-Christian Dumonet. We came to this restaurant to feel what Paris felt like in the old days. They serve half portions so you can sample lots of cuisine. They are known for excellent boeuf bourguignon, steak tartare, and roasted saddle of lamb.
Decor, Vibe – Old world Paris with front bar area, banquettes, amber walls, classic lights, pantina tones, old posters. This place has not been updated in many years and shouldn’t be! Mostly locals, artsy types, and some tourists were dining. Folks were mostly in the 40-60 range. Tables are yours for the evening.

Massive Foie Gras Terrine
Foie gras de canard frais Maison (18€ la demi) – Half sized portion of Foie gras terrine. So big, we would be scared by the size of the full portion. Excellent quality, incredibly smooth. Nice toasted french bread. We could not finish it all so they vacuumed pack the leftovers for us.
Cassoulet Maison (Saucisse, confit de canard, poitrine de porc) (29) – Cassoulet came in a huge pot, enough for two. It was full of well simmered (1 full day) sausage, duck confit, pork belly, beans. Incredible flavor. A must get.
Beef Bourguigon
Boeuf Bourguignon aux tagliatelles (26) – Beef bourguignon stew cooked for two days, braised in a heavy burgundy wine sauce with a large plate of egg noodles. Rich broth flavored with with mushrooms, bacon, garlic, onions, carrots. Highly recommended. Huge portion. The picture does not do it justice.
Poisson du jour (21) – Sea Bass was the catch of the day and another huge dish. It was cooked fine and tasted normal but really was not special like the other dishes like the duck (canard) or veal (veau).
OK:
Haricots verts (8) were one huge plate of blanched green beans. Still need those veggies..
Salade verte (7.5) was a huge salad that came at the end of the meal. Forgot we ordered it.
Pans:
Josephine Chez Dumonet had decent but restrained service. Servers were friendly but we had to ask for things. Food was excellent, portion size outrageous, and prices reasonable. We wanted to get a souffle but had ZERO room. Highly recommended, we’ll be back the next time we are in Paris. You will not feel this classic atmosphere at other famous Bistro including Chez Georges or Le Fontaine de Mars. Metro: Duroc
