The Cavalier San Francisco exterior decor

Why did we dine here? – Cavalier is a British style restaurant in downtown San Francisco from Anna Weinberg, James Nicholas and Chef Jennifer Puccio, owners of the restaurants Marlowe and Park Tavern. They’ve done a great job in the past, so it was time to give their latest venture a try. This restaurant is next door to the San Francisco Centre Shopping Complex, making it very convenient. Chef Puccio was present when we dined here for lunch. The interiors deep red color scheme with lots of conservative wood, sets the scene.

This hotel / restaurant has the weirdest bathroom divider we have ever seen. A dark brown see-through glass separates the men’s and women’s bathroom. There is space around it for sound to travel. We kept hearing voices from somewhere and were wondering if someone was hiding in the bathroom. Surreal.

Insider Tip – Lunch is less costly than dinner.

Cuisine – British American Pub
Location – Downtown San Francisco
Opened – 2013

Service – Cavalier was professional but at times not very present. He did help us navigate the menu and order the better dishes. Hopefully this will be addressed.
Verdict – Cavalier still has some growing pains. Once they find their footing, they should be as popular as the owners’ other hotspots. We would love to come back for dinner to try some of the other items.

Cavalier Signature Dishes – Prawns, Bangers and Mash, Leg of Lamb, eggs

Cavalier’s Menu shows their versatility. This restaurant is connected to the Hotel Zetta, and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are 10 entrees for dinner as well as 9 appetizers. Not a lot of options for vegetarians. They serve a burger similar to Marlowe’s, but there is so much else to order!

Cavalier Food Picks:

The Cavalier San Francisco boat of prawns

Boat of Prawns marie rose sauce ($15) were highlighted in Bauer’s Review. The beautiful picture reminded us to order this dish. Four large fresh prawns, cooked perfectly and not needing the included sauce. Messy but worthwhile.

Farro and Roasted Beets ($13) basil, pea tendrils, and pumpkin seeds is a salad available at lunch. A bit on the vinegary side, but still a recommended salad with soft and crisp textures in each bite.

The Cavalier San Francisco Quail egg

Quail Egg Mayonnaise, celery, celery salt and crispy shallot ($2) was one beautiful looking egg. Almost too good to eat. They have four different types of eggs with this version, the only one allowing you to order a single egg. If you are an egg fan, you need to try this! It’s only $2.

The Cavalier San Francisco roast leg of lamb sandwich

Roast Leg of Lamb sandwich charred aubergine, pickled red onion and salsa verde ($16) includes thrice cooked chips or a salad of seasonal greens. This was one hell of a sandwich. Excellent lamb, cooked to a medium rare, served on top of a high quality acme bun. The side salad was fancy and hit the spot.

OK: (Order if you like this dish)

The Cavalier San Francisco english cuban sandwich

English Cuban sandwich, ale-brined pork, pickles, englsih chedder and marie rose sauce ($15) was a good looking sandwich that was overshadowed by the overuse of mustard. We had to remove some, allowing us to finally taste the quality of the pork. Hopefully they will tone this down in the future.

Pans: (We would not reorder these dishes)
None

Great looking restaurant! And the food looks very tasty, I know I could sink my teeth in that Roast Leg of Lamb sandwich, right about now.
