Why did we dine here? – Alta is the latest restaurant in Daniel Patterson’s empire. (Coi, Plum, etc) Kitty corner from Twitter, this is in middle of the .com mid Market area. Clearly a tech worker hangout.
They are a neighborhood restaurant and gathering place that focuses on local ingredients and spirited drinks. They have a somewhat low 3.5 stars on Yelp mainly due to poor service.
Insider Tip – Order carefully
Cuisine – New American
Location – San Francisco Mid Market
Opened – 2013
Service – Alta had solid service. The knowledgeable waiter guided us through the menu. No need to ask for refills, etc. Pacing was fine.
Verdict – Alta was a mixed bag. Some good dishes, then some below average ones.
Is this restaurant worth a 5 minute drive? Yes. 30 minute? Maybe. 1 Hour? No.
Alta Signature Dishes – Beef Puffs, Pork Shoulder, Porridge, Braised Beef
Alta’s Menu was an interesting exercise in diversity. Some meaty items along with several vegetarian ones. Many items are meant to be eaten family style.
Alta Food Picks:
Beef tendon puffs ($6) are greasy, crispy and full of meat flavor. Stick to the tongue goodness.
Hen of the wood mushroom ($19) cracked wheat porridge, baby turnip was one of the best dishes of the night. A drizzle of olive oil topped off this interesting porridge with stellar mushrooms.
Slow cooked pork shoulder ($23) clams, escarole, crushed potatoes was served medium rare in a good sized chunk. Juicy and tender meat along with nice clams. Definitely a New American combination.
The Malted Ice Cream Chocolate Mole ($6.50) was a fun dessert with a hint of cinnamon and slight spicy chili tint.
Coffee ($6 small) was pretty tall. They are serious about coffee here.
OK: (Order if you like this dish)
Mojito ($14) was pretty strong and tall, but full of ice. Not as balanced as we would like.
Pans: (We would not reorder these dishes)
Braised beef ($24) gigante bean, kale, anchovy was too dry. They need to keep the beef in the sauce.
