Little Sichuan Newark Restaurant Review

Posted by admin, October 1st, 2008

Little Sichuan Newark Exterior

Little Sichuan, not to be confused with the one in San Mateo, used to be located in Fremont, but moved to this new larger location and upgraded itself. It is now located in a big strip mall anchored by Ranch 99. This mall has a ton of different restaurants. The old one was decent, so we decided to give the new place a try. We tried them on the weekend, when they have some additional specials.

Little Sichuan Newark Interior

Decor, Vibe - Typical Chinese restaurant decor, nothing fancy. Lots of families and big groups eating Little Sichuan’s spicy food.

Picks:

Little Sichuan Newark Scallion Pancake

Green Onion Pancake ($3.50) was crispy and flavorful, how these crunchy things should be. Excellent but a little greasy and surely will clog arteries. It is amazing how many places cannot get this basic dish right.

Little Sichuan Newark Fish

Spicy Boiled Fish ($8.50) was a huge bowl full of fish. Not as spicy as it looks. Lots of cabbage, cilantro, scallions. Also available as beef or pork.

Little Sichuan Newark Duck

Tea Smoked Duck ($8.50 half) was one of the best we had. Heavy smoke flavor, tender meat, not dry, perfect. Also, a large amount for half an order.

Little Sichuan Newark Hot Noodles

Hot Noodles (Dan Dan Mein) with spicy peanut sauce ($5.95) is a classic sichuan dish. Good noodles, but not hand pulled. Great sauce, very little meat. Picture make it look gross, but this tasted pretty good.

Little Sichuan Newark Chicken

Spicy Diced Chicken ($8.50) was a little spicy and also a huge dish. Lots of flavor and zestiness. Also like a variant of Kung Pao Chicken. We accidentally ordered this dish, our intention was to order the dry spicy chicken.

OK:

Little Sichuan Newark String Beans

Dry Cooked String Beans ($6.95) had a good amount of spiciness to it but just was not great. Not crispy and flavorful, yet salty. Just average.

Little Sichuan Newark Dumplings

Pork Dumplings ($5.95) were plentiful but very average. We probably should not have ordered dumplings at a Sichuan place.

Little Sichuan Newark Potatoes

Shredded Potatoe ($6.95) was pretty expensive for such a simple dish. Not much flavor just a little bit of green onion, but massive quantities.

Pans:
None

Service was pretty bad. It took a year to order, get extra bowls, water, etc. Multiple tables seemed to have the same issue. The food was good and not many similar restaurants are in the vicinity. If we were looking for Sichuan style food in this area, we would definitely come back.

Classic Sichuan Restaurant Review, Millbrae

Posted by admin, September 19th, 2008

Classic Sichuan Millbrae Exterior

Classic Sichuan is a Chinese Sichuan style restaurant in Millbrae.  The owner used to run the popular Little Sichuan in San Mateo.
The menu is nearly identical to Little Sichuan, as is the chinese name of this place.
Sichuan cuisine is best known for spiciness, cold dishes, dumplings, and deep fried dishes.

Classic Sichuan Millbrae Interior

This restaurant is not very large or fancy.  They do serve some special items on weekends only; Soy Bean Milk, Chinese Donuts, and Soy Bean Jello.
The cook appeared to have recently left.

Picks:

Classic Sichuan Millbrae Chicken Soup

Chinese Herbal Chicken Soup ($3.95) was just like mom used to make, although a little salty. Lots of fun ingredients and
surprisingly good broth.

Classic Sichuan Millbrae Scallion pancakes

Green onion pancakes (Chung yau bang) were good and hot and very crispy.  Done very well.

Classic Sichuan Millbrae Chinese Donut

Chinese Donut ($2) - Greasy and cruncy as they should be.  Hard to mess up.

OK:

Classic Sichuan Millbrae Dry Cooked Chicken

Crispy Chicken ($7.50) for half, was very crisy but a little too dry.  It wasn’t salty at least.

Pans:

Classic Sichuan Millbrae Soy Bean Jello

Savory Soy Bean jello ($2) had same sesame paste as cold noodles. Way over done. Lots of sediment.

Classic Sichuan Millbrae Cold Noodles

Spicy Sichuan Cold Noodes ($6.25) with pork, is a classic simple sichuan dish.  The noodles had too much sesame oil, so they were sticky.
We kept the chili oil on the side to prevent overduing it.

Classic Sichuan Millbrae Cold Bean Jello

Beijing Style cold bean Jello ($6.95) was not that good. Sauce was too sticky. Too much seasame.

The food came about 5 minutes after we ordered, pretty fast!  The food was fair and provided a good representation of Sichuan cuisine. They need to adjust some of the dishes and settle down on the chef issue. Everyday Beijing in San Mateo is a more consistent bet.
The Vietnamese place next door is pretty busy.  Probably worth a try.
