Posted by Foodnut.com, February 25th, 2013

Shanghai Dumpling Shop Millbrae Exterior

Shanghai Dumpling Shop is a popular Shanghainese Chinese restaurant in Millbrae’s Broadway shopping district. While they have all the ‘standard’ Chinese restaurant dishes, they are specifically known for dishes from Shanghai, including dumplings even though the staff can be heard belting out Cantonese Chinese. Our last visit was in the February 2013.

Shanghai Bistro, Millbrae formerly Shanghai East, San Mateo

Posted by Foodnut.com, January 31st, 2012

Shanghai Bistro Millbrae exterior decor

Shanghai East has moved to Millbrae and changed names to Shanghai Bistro, with their staff and chef intact. Spicy Empire has taken its place in its old 25th Ave location, San Mateo. The owner took over China Bistro in San Mateo in early 2013 and brought the same Shanghai Chinese cuisine to that restaurant.

Champagne Restaurant Review, Millbrae

Posted by Foodnut.com, November 21st, 2011

Champagne Restaurant Millbrae Interior Decor

Why did we dine here? – Champagne Restaurant is a more casual sister restaurant to Champagne Seafood in San Mateo. A friend had been here several times and recommended it.
This restaurant is more of a Hong Kong style noodle house but has most of the other restaurant’s menu. Champagne gets a lot of to go business from the folks upstairs.

Hong Kong Flower Lounge – Mayflower Dim Sum Restaurant Review

Posted by Foodnut.com, October 12th, 2011

Hong Kong Flower Lounge Millbrae exterior decor

Hong Kong Flower Lounge is part of the Mayflower restaurant group that has four Chinese Cantonese restaurants locations in the San Francisco Bay area; San Francisco, Millbrae, Union City, and Milpitas. We visited the location in Millbrae. This review concentrates on dim sum served only during lunch. They’ve been around a long time, over 20 years. Hong Kong Flower Lounge has an extensive menu and have lot of items are not on carts, thus needing to be ordered through a waiter. Our latest visit was in October, 2011.

South Sea Seafood Village Restaurant Review, Millbrae

Posted by Foodnut.com, August 4th, 2011

South Sea Seafood Village Millbrae Exterior Decor

South Sea Seafood Village took the place of Fook Yuen Seafood Restaurant in Millbrae in February 2010. Fook Yuen was a long standing Chinese restaurant in Millbrae that acquired a good reputation over the years. South Sea Seafood also has a location in San Francisco’s Sunset district. Millbrae is home to many fine Cantonese Chinese restaurant including Asian Pearl Peninsula and Zen Peninsula. With such high powered competition we wondered how they would position themselves. We came for dinner last in early 2012, and returned for dim sum Lunch last in 2011.

The Kitchen Dinner Restaurant Review, Millbrae

Posted by Foodnut.com, July 1st, 2011

The Kitchen Millbrae Exterior

The Kitchen is part of a restaurant group that owns highly regarded Chinese Cantonese restaurants in California including Asian Pearl Peninsula. We’ve been to most of them and find them pretty good. This review concentrates on dinner.  The food here is pretty authentic Chinese Cantonese food, so some may not like this type of more hardcore cuisine. Do not come here for General’s Chicken or Broccoli Beef. Another review covers The Kitchen dim sum lunch. Our last visit for dinner was in the summer of 2012, a meal where we found that their quality has improved. The Kitchen has recently remodeled the dining room, making it much more open, spacious, and modern.

Asian Pearl Peninsula Restaurant, Millbrae – Dinner

Posted by Foodnut.com, April 29th, 2011

Asian Pearl Millbrae Exterior Decor

Asian Pearl Peninsula in Millbrae was at one time, part of the same Culinary Wonderland group that owned the highly rated The Kitchen in Millbrae, hence the same menu. We’ve been to this location a couple times and have found it to offer very good Cantonese Chinese cuisine, in face some of the best in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Richmond Asian Pearl has also served up very good Chinese food. This place stays open till 1am. This review incorporates many dinner visits from 2009 through Late 2011. A separate review is for Asian Pearl Peninsula Dim Sum Lunch.

Posted by Foodnut.com, April 8th, 2011

Shanghai Winter Garden recently opened in Millbrae, continuing the trend of new Shanghai restaurant on the Peninsula. This restaurant is located in the spot that once housed the deli, so the interior is pretty nice.

Summary – Shanghai Winter Garden is a pretty mediocre restaurant except for a couple interesting dishes.
Insider Tip – Go for Snacks

The Kitchen Lunch Dim Sum Restaurant Review, Millbrae

Posted by Foodnut.com, April 1st, 2011

The Kitchen Dim Sum Millbrae Exterior

The Kitchen is part of a restaurant group that owns Chinese Cantonese restaurants in California including Asian Pearl Peninsula. We’ve been to most of them and find them pretty good. This review concentrates on dim sum served only during lunch. Another review covers The Kitchen dinner. We had to wait about 20 minutes to be seated, pretty typical on another occasion around 2pm, we walked right in. They appear to be under new ownership and not related to Asian Pearl anymore.  Our last visit for lunch was in March 2012. The Kitchen has recently remodeled the dining room, making it much more open, spacious, and modern. They were listed in the Michelin Guide (No stars) and recently added a  freshly made Dragon Beard Candy stand by the door.

Gourmet Village Restaurant Review, Millbrae

Posted by Foodnut.com, June 7th, 2010

Gourmet Village is a Chinese restaurant that opened in April 2010 on Millbrae’s Broadway Street. The chef used to work at the well-respected The Kitchen restaurant.  We came once for lunch and once for dinner.
Decor, Vibe – Gourmet Village has bare-bones Chinese restaurant decor with just a couple artifacts on the walls and some seafood tanks in the back. Mostly locals were having lunch when we were dining. Dinner was another story, with the place jam packed. Asians seem to like trying new places.
