Amici’s East Coast Pizzeria Restaurant Review

Posted by admin, September 22nd, 2008

Amicis Pizza Exterior

This local chain has 10 locations in the San Francisco Bay Area. We reviewed the San Mateo location. They use brick ovens and use the slogan “A taste of New York”
Amici’s serves pizza, Pasta, Salads, and Sandwiches. People come for the pizza, so we went straight to the draw.
They had a bunch of delivery cars out back, so they must have a big delivery business.

Amicis Pizza 2

Decor is average, nothing memorable.  This location is pretty cramped and has only 1 shared bathroom.

Amicis Pizza Combo Pizza 2

Amicis Pizza Combo Pizza

The Amici’s Combo pizza 10in ($16.25) took about 20 minutes. It has Pepperoni, Meatball, Bacon, Sautéed Mushrooms, Black Olives. A little soggy in the middle. Lots of toppings, edge crust was crunchy but not great. This was a pretty average pizza, edible, but nothing special. The similar styled pizza at Toto’s is a better bet. If you like artisan or deep dish style pizza, look elsewhere.

Amicis Pizza Cheese Pizza

Amicis Pizza Cheese Pizza 2

Cheese Pizza (Mini $7.75) was very cheesy but had a layer of grease on top. No way we could eat it without padding it down.  Good way to continue childhood obesity.

Pans:

Amicis Pizza Pasta

Linguini pasta with Butter sauce ($5.75) was pretty bland and oily. Cheap food for kids though. The marinara sauce is healthier. Soda was $1.75 extra.

Amici’s service was ok only after waiting for a long time. It was quite clear they were overloaded. Several wine and beer options. Only 2 dessert options. You can order online for delivery. Half bakes pizzas are also available.  Amici’s also has a kid’s menu. Corkage is only $8.

Beretta Restaurant Review

Posted by admin, September 4th, 2008

Beretta Restaurant

Beretta is a contemporary Italian comfort food restaurant in the San Francisco Mission district.  They serve inventive cocktails, specialty pizzette, and more. They use organic, fresh, seasonal, and local items when possible.

Beretta Interior

The decor is modern black.  Many of the tables by the window are crammed inches apart to maximize seating. The place was filled with couples and small parties mostly in the 21-40 age range. The place does not take reservations unless you have 6+ people.  You have to wait for a seat starting around 7pm or so.

Picks:

Beretta Spicy italian sausage pizza

Spicy italian sausage Pizza with panna & spring onions ($13) has a very very thin crust, and a good amount of high quality toppings.  Edge was not very thick nor was it very crunchy.

Beretta Spicy italian sausage pizza 4

Super Thin Crust

This is a decent pizza but not as good as Pizzeria Delfina, Giani, or A16.

Beretta Panzanella Tomatoe Salad

Panzanella with cucumber & heirloom tomatoes ($7) was a refreshing and healthy salad with very light dressing. The tomatoes were fresh and in the peak of their season.

Beretta Saffron risotto

Saffron risotto with osso buco ($14) was a smaller dish but provided good tasting risotto that wasn’t too salty. The Osso buco was very tender and flavorful.  A good balanced combination.

Beretta Bonet Chocolate Gelato 2

Bonet-Chocolate Gelato with amaretti and caramel ($7) was a good desert with rich chocolate flavor, not a lot of cream, accentuated by some caramel topping.

OK:

Boccalone artisan salumi with giardiniera, lardo, prosciutto di parma, lonza, mortadella, sopressata ($14) was a pretty big plate of salumi. The quality was ok but this dish did not have any wow factor.  The lardo was almost pure fat.

Beretta Dolores park swizzle

Dolores park swizzle ($9) with rum, lime, maraschino, absinthe, bitters was a balanced strong cocktail that wasn’t very fruity, and a little bitter.

Beretta vanilla gelato 2

vanilla gelato with extra virgin olive oil and sea salt ($7) was a really weird combination that waitress suggested.  One of us found it interesting and balanced between the creamy gelato and the subtle oil. The other person I was dining with found it interesting and not worth a second try.

Pans:
None

The service was above average with the waiter or bus boys coming by in regular intervals. Beretta’s prices are not high, so they offer good value for the dollar. Serving high quality food at reasonable prices is a winning combination.  They do add 4% to cover San Francisco health costs.
