Waterbar Restaurant Review, San Francisco

Posted by admin, December 10th, 2008

Waterbar San Francisco Exterior

Waterbar is a seafood restaurant located strategically on the San Francisco waterfront. It has extra ordinary views and is next door to the steakhouse restaurant Epic Roasthouse. They are both part of the vast Kuleto Restaurant empire.
The chef Mark Franz also runs Farallon and Nick’s Cove. Waterbar has several meat entrees forced to come here. The use local and sustainable seafood.

Decor, Vibe - Pat Kuleto is a master restaurant designer and has created 175 restaurants including Boulevard, Jardinere and many other restaurants. This place has several impressive floor to ceiling aquariums which add to the dynamic atmosphere. Views are fantastic, even better than next door. Folks from their 30’s to 60’s were dining. Many larger parties. Business people after work were hanging out in the beautiful bar area.

Picks:

Waterbar San Francisco Oysters

Platter of Oysters ($2.75 each) - We had a variety of oysters, all were fresh and came with dipping sauces. It is funny the oysters are cheaper next door.

Waterbar San Francisco Geoduck Cerviche

Geoduck Ceviche ($16) with Dashi custard, uni, shaved celery tasted incredibly good but was super tiny. Quality over quantity.

OK:

Waterbar San Francisco Fish

Yellowtail Jack ($33) looked great but was just average in taste. It was not cooked very well. The portion size was decent.

Waterbar San Francisco Heirloom Potatoes

Roasted Heirloom Potatoes ($8) were plentiful but small.

Waterbar San Francisco Kale

Spigairello Kale ($6) was a little watery but tasted fine.

Pans:

Waterbar San Francisco Lobster

Pressed Main Lobster ($65) with cauliflower gratin, natural juices was super expensive and came to us almost cold. The meat tasted fine. Should have sent it back.

Waterbar San Francisco Dessert

We complained and they comp’d us some delicious cookies and truffles.

Waterbar service was above average but could have been more attentive for such an expensive place. They have a 4% service surcharge for health care. The food is good, but we feel that there are many cheaper places with superior seafood. Hopefully they will work on the food.
Obviously prices are inflated by the expensive architecture and the views. Wine starts at $9 a glass with corkage a high $25. A cheaper option to see the incredible view would be to hit the incredible bar for some oysters or cocktails and dessert.

Old Port Lobster Shack Restaurant Review, Redwood City

Posted by admin, December 8th, 2008

Lobster Shack Exterior

Lobster Shack Redwood City

Lobster Shack San Francisco

Lobster Shack San Francisco

Lobster Shack focuses on bringing the New England lobster experience to the San Francisco Bay Area. It is located in a strip mall near Baker’s Square in Redwood City and also in San Francisco’s North Beach. They fly in the lobsters. They have much more than lobster on the menu, seafood appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, and seafood platters. They have BBQ’s on the weekends.

Decor, Vibe - Birch picnic tables ala New England with bouys, fishing nets. During lunch, workers from nearby were eating.

Picks:

Lobster Shack Lobster Roll

Lobster Shack Naked Lobster Roll

The Naked Lobster Roll ($18.75) was lobster meat on a toasted roll with sides of fries, mayo, cole slaw, and drawn butter. It has massive amounts of tender lobster on their specially baked nicely toasted and buttered buns. Perfect lobster flavor. Wish it had a bigger bun as there was so much lobster. No need to slather mayo on this beast, it dilutes the flavor too much.
Their Steamed Maine Lobster 1.25lb Dinner was only a little more $21.75. It comes with corn on the cob too.

OK:
None

Pans:
None

Lobster Shack serves up its namesake lobster extremely well. We have been here before and have sampled the steamed whole lobster and can vouch for that also.
If you have a hankering for New England style seafood, head here. Kids menu available.
Happy Hour Mon-Thur 5-7pm with $2 off Shacketizers and Draft Beer. $4 off Shack House Red or White Wines.

Hog Island Oyster Co. Restaurant Review, San Francisco

Posted by admin, November 16th, 2008

Hog Island Oyster Co. is located in San Francisco’s Ferry Building. They have an oyster bar that serves sustainable seafood, chowder, and salads. Fresh oysters brought fresh from their Tomales Bay farm each morning. They served baked oysters and cooked seafood for those that do not want raw items. You could drive up to their farm and get oysters even fresher.
Decor, Vibe - Small place with counter seating in the center and a couple tables on the side. Locals and tourists of all ages were eating.

Picks:

Hog Island San Francisco Manila Clams

Steamed Manila Clams ($14) with garlic, butter, chili flake and white wine broth were plentiful, fresh, and were in a flavorful broth with some sausage. Clams were small.

Hog Island San Francisco Oysters

Hog Island Kumamoto and Sweetwater, Tomales Bay Oysters ($17 for 6) were fresh and good. Lemon, Lime, and red wine vinegar dip helped them go down fast. We prefer the smaller more flavorful oysters.

OK:
None

Pans:
None

Hog Island Oyster Co. serves up a limited focused menu. If you are looking for oysters, look no further. Service was slightly above average, not exceptional. Few places can say they grow the oysters and serve them to you also. Another great reason to visit the foodie haven known as the Ferry Building. Be careful as the larger dining area next to Hog Island, is a Ferry Plaza Seafood.
