Evvia Restaurant Review

Evvia Palo Alto 13

Evvia is the sister restaurant of Kokkari in San Francisco and has been serving Greek cuisine to the Silicon Valley since 1995. They are located in downtown Palo Alto, just off the main University street shopping district.
This restaurant has a feel of a Mediterranean country inn, with the stylish oven, cookware, and large communal table.

Small and large groups were seen dining here as were some families and couples.  The menus vary depending on the season.

Picks:

Evvia Palo Alto Tomato Salad

Tomato Salad ($11) with local heirloom tomatoes with whipped manouri cheese, olive oil & Greek basil was an outstanding salad.  The 3 kinds of tomatoes were fresh and tasted great.  The dressing was on the light side and did not overwhelm the fresh produce.  The cheese was awesome, not too heavy, so it perfectly balanced the tomatoes.

Evvia Palo Alto Lamb Chops

Arnisia Paidakia ($29.50) rib-cut, mesquite-grilled lamb chops with olive oil roasted potatoes is their specialty and it shows.  Perfectly cooked to your desired level of doneness.  High quality lamb without gaminess. Very good spiced crust. Excellent roast potatoes that were in too low a quantity.

Evvia Palo Alto Yogurt Sorbet

Yiaourti Sorbet ($8.25) yogurt sorbet with fresh fruit granita, local berries & a coconut cookie was delicious.  The yogurt out does anything from those trendy new yogurt shops.  The granita was great, not too sweet and a perfect accent to the yogurt.  This is a nice dessert that is not too heavy.

OK:

Evvia Palo Alto Octopus

Octopus ($11.75) traditional grilled with lemon, oregano & olive oil - was of fair quantity and tasted good.  The texture of the octopus was a little mushy on the surface, not crunchy.  This is probably a style of cooking issue and not fundamental.

Evvia Palo Alto 8

Kotopoulo ($20.75) lemon-oregano rotisserie chicken with roasted sweet onions & potatoes was a good dish but not great.  The chicken while it tasted good, was a little dry and not juicy.  Zuni Cafe has nothing to worry about.

Pans:
None.

The service was excellent without having waiters hover over your table.  Clearly they have a large staff.

Evvia Palo Alto 7

Prices are not cheap but you do get quality food that is cooked well. Wine prices are on the typical high side.  Glasses of wine cost about $11, selection is above average.
If you are in this area and seek fine dining, you should definitely consider Evvia. This and sister restaurant Kokkari are probably the best greek restaurants in the SF Bay Area.

Ecco Burlingame, Restaurant Review

Posted by admin, August 1st, 2008

Ecco Burlingame Front

Located off the busy Burlingame avenue corridor, this place is located down the block from Starbucks. They have served food with a Mediterranean/Asian influence since 1986. We tested lunch here.

Ecco Burlingame Inside

Decor is modern and clean.  Pretty small crowd of locals for lunch.

Picks:

Ecco Burlingame Duck Salad

Warm Duck Salad ($14.95) scented with raspberry over capellini and mixed greens was an good dish with not too much dressing and a nice raspberry sauce. The duck was overcooked, but the sauce balanced it out.

Ecco Burlingame Kobe Beef Burger

Kobe Beef Burger ($15) with Sauteed Mushrooms, Onion bun, and small salad was huge and came with fries. More like a Kobe style burger. The bun was a special onion one.

OK:
None

Pans:

Service was above average with the waiter coming by often. The place was deserted, so service may have been affected by this. Prices are on the high side, so better values exist
during lunch. All in all the food was decent making this a solid option. They have a couple tables by the sidewalk for warmer days.

Trio Restaurant Review, Puerto Vallarta

Posted by admin, July 10th, 2008

Trio Puerto Vallarta 24

Trio is a Mediterranean restaurant run by 2 chef owners from Europe. It is located in the heart of the city and is highly recommended by the Fodor’s Guide. They have a small back patio and roof top dining if weather allows. Trio also stays open late. An english version of the menu is available.

Decor, Vibe -Classy architecture and artwork.  Patio in the back.  Mostly older folks in their 40’s+.

Dessert Menu

Trio Puerto Vallarta Butter

3 kinds of buttery goodness

Picks:

Trio Puerto Vallarta Snapper

Snapper ($210 pesos, 10:1 US$) - We saw them getting fresh deliveries of fish, so we knew this was going to be fresh. Huge portions and cooked well.

Trio Puerto Vallarta Octopus Salad

Grilled Octopus and asparagus ($125) on a warm tomato salad. Yummy grilled fresh octopus with pieces of large pieces of tomato.

Trio Puerto Vallarta Soft Shell Crab

Soft Shell Crab ($135) on a spicy peanut sauce and Asian cucumber salad. Lightly battered made this a crunchy delight. A thousand-islandish dressing for dipping.

Trio Puerto Vallarta Sorbet

Mango and Passion fruit sherbert ($75) - A light and refreshing way to finish a meal. Came with a little bit of fresh fruit.

OK:

Trio Puerto Vallarta Calamari

Calamari ($95) - A little heavy on the tomato broth for the calamari.

Trio Puerto Vallarta Rack of Lamb

Trio Puerto Vallarta Lamb Raviolis

Rack of Lamb ($285) and ravioli with lamb ragout. Grilled vegetables and mint sauce. Looks great and was cooked correctly, but the lamb was a little gamey, indicating not the best quality around. The tomato, green pepper accent was a little heavy.

Pass:
None

This restaurant serves good food at reasonable service, all in an intimate atmosphere. Trio is a good choice if you want fine dining in Puerto Vallarta. They also have a sister restaurant on the beach called Vitea.
