Vik’s Chaat Corner Restaurant Review, Berkeley

Posted by admin, December 22nd, 2008

Viks Chaat Corner Berkeley 2

Vik’s Chaat Corner is a busy Indian restaurant in the more industrial area of Berkeley. Chaat means “to lick”. Traditionally this is known as road side snacks that made people lick every last morsel.
They have have a regular menu, and add different specials on weekdays and weekends.

Decor, Vibe - Warehouse with minimal decor and spartan tables. Their grocery store is next door. Lots of workers on lunch break were eating when we went there.

Picks:

Viks Chaat Corner Berkeley Chicken Curry

Chicken Curry Special ($6.25) was a boneless chicken curry that was very spicy but tasty. It came with long grain Basmati rice. Some of the items were pretty greasy especially the Dal (Lentils). The Raita (Spiced / Flavored yogurt) helped reduce the spiciness. The small helping of Achaar (Spicy Pickle) packed a sensory punch.

Viks Chaat Corner Berkeley Masala Dosa

Viks Chaat Corner Berkeley Sambar

Masala Dosa ($6.50) is a Crispy savory crepe made of finely ground rice and dai with South Indian style spiced potatoes. It was served with coconut chutney and sambar (Light and spicy Lentils)
The crepe was hot an crispy when we got it. The potatoes inside were flavorful but not spicy. A good vegetarian dish. The Sambar was pretty greasy.

They are moving around the corner to 2390 4th St in April 2009.

Gulzaar Halaal Restaurant Review, San Jose

Posted by admin, September 30th, 2008

Gulzaar Halaal San Jose Front

This mom and pop, family style restaurant serves Middle Eastern Halal, Indian/Pakistani food.
Per Wikipedia: Halal is an Arabic term meaning “permissible”. In the English language, it most frequently refers to food that is permissible according to Islamic law. It is located in a generic part of San Jose not far from the Westfield Valley Fair shopping center.

Most people buy items to go, but there are several tables for you to sit and eat your items. The decor inside is pretty basic and generic.

Picks:

Gulzaar Halaal San Jose Hummus

Hummus ($4.25 Reg/ $5.95 Large) - Really warm and delicious pita bread, with some of the best Hummus we’ve tasted. A little zesty. I’m sure the Baba Ghanooj is also good.

Gulzaar Halaal San Jose Chicken Biryani

Chicken Biryani ($9.75) - Aromatic and flavorful rice and chicken dish served with special yogurt sauce and salad on the side. The chicken was tender and flavorful.  The rice was real flavorful and had some crunchy tidbits in it.

Gulzaar Halaal San Jose Beef Kebab Plate

Beef Kebab Plate ($9.75) - Kebab of quality cut ground beef freshly spiced on a bed of saffron flavored rice. Available as spicy. Good beef quality, not a lot of flavor. Same type of rice as Chicken dish.

The service was fine, with the people very friendly.  This place is not a luxorious place by any means, but
offers lots of value in the food their provide. Worth the trek if you are in the neighborhood.
