Why did we dine here? – Newport Tan Cang is a Vietnamese-Chinese restaurant located in San Gabriel. This restaurant is highly rated on Yelp and is listed on the top Chinese restaurant of the USA list. We were recently in southern California and wanted to try some of the better restaurants and had this place on our short list.

Insider Tip – Order Vietnamese dishes

Cuisine – Vietnamese, Chinese
Location – San Gabriel
Opened – 1989

Service – Newport Tan Cang had reasonable service, but not anything exceptional. There were an ample number of servers running around and the waitress made some good recommendations.
Verdict – Newport Tan Cang strikes us as more of a Vietnamese restaurant that also serves Chinese food than the converse. The food is very good here but not exceptional. The decor is very nice, outclassing most Asian restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area. The area towards the back, with Asian dividers is particularly nice. Next time, we’re going to visit a more traditional Cantonese-Chinese restaurant down here for dinner, like Sea Harbor.

Newport Tan Cang Signature Dishes – Newport Special Lobster (bring 4 adults), Newport Special Crab, Clams with Spicy Hot Sauce, Beef Luc Lac.

Newport Tan Cang’s Menu has over 130 items, everything from seafood to meats, to 13 different soups. We decided stick to the famous Vietnamese dishes.

Newport Tan Cang Food Picks:

Newport Tan Cang San Gabriel catfish with hot and sour soup

Cat Fish with Hot & Sour Soup – ($11.95) was a huge soup full of colorful ingredients. Pineapple, fish, tomatoes, Jalapenos, celery, and more. This soup was very sweet and sour, but needed a lot more heat. If you order it, ask for an extra spicy version.

Newport Tan Cang San Gabriel clams hot sauce

Clam with Spicy Hot Sauce – ($11.95) featured heavy basil flavors with some very fresh and pure clams. A recommended dish.

Sauteed Peasprout – ($9.95) were very good, not very greasy, and fairly garlicky.

Newport Tan Cang San Gabriel beef luc lac

Beef Luc Lac on Rice – ($8.75) We did not want a large platter of beef and decided to order this rice plate version of their signature dish. That being said, this was still huge. Nice tender meat, slightly sweet sauce.

Boba milk tea drinks were surprisingly good here.
