Sweet Basil Thai Website

Sweet Basil Thai Cuisine is a restaurant in Foster City, a couple doors down from popular 5 Joy Chinese restaurant. They also run a vegetarian Thai restaurant next door. We were going to 5 Joy decided to mix it up a little bit after having a very good meal at Osha Thai in San Francisco.
Decor, Vibe – Sweet Basil Thai Cuisine has very nice interior decor with Buddha fountain by the door, modern art lamps, wooden banquettes, and bamboo tables. The place was pretty full for a weekend evening.

Menu

Sweet Basil Thai Cuisine Menu is pretty standard with many different Thai appetizers, salads, soups, curries, entrees, and desserts. Well priced Lunch rice plate specials.

Picks:
Thai Ice Tea ($2) with solidly good.

Sweet Basil Thai Cuisine Foster City satay chicken

Satay Chicken ($6.95 – 4 pcs) Chicken on skewers served with peanut sauce and cucumber salad had four good sized pieces of tender chicken. The tangy peanut sauce even had bits of peanut in.

Sweet Basil Thai Cuisine Foster City Volcanic beef

Volcanic Beef ($12.95) Wok-fried premium flank steak with basil and black pepper in a lava sauce garnished with onion rings was a large dish filled with tons of higher-quality meat. Not a spicy dish as one would assume with the name volcano. Nice thick onion rings.

OK:
Eggplant ($8.95 – Pad Makur) Sauteed with eggplant, bell peppers, onion and basil with beef had some very nicely cooked eggplant, but the beef was low quality and pretty forgettable.

Roasted Duck Salad ($8.95) Roasted duck with chili lemon dressing, onion and tomatoes was on the salty side and also had some fishy flavors. Lots of duck, but could use some peanuts to tone down the zesty onions.

Pans:
Pumpkin Curry ($9.95) with Chicken was pretty forgettable. The curry was not good and the pumpkin did not seem fresh. There was very little pumpkin in this dish.

Service – Sweet Basil Thai Cuisine had pretty bad service with long waits to order, get refills, and even to get the bill.

Value – Prices are typical for this style restaurant.

Alternatives – Nearby restaurants include 5 Joy, which we will go to next time we are in the vicinity.

Verdict – Sweet Basil Thai Cuisine served up pretty average Thai food in a nice looking restaurant, marred by poor service. Good Thai restaurants are hard to find down here, so the search continues.
