Luna has closed, visit Hotaru and Sushi Sam instead.
Luna Japanese Fusion Bistro is a new Japanese restaurant in downtown San Mateo, where there seems to be a Japanese restaurant on every block and one right next door. This restaurant, run by Chinese folks, focuses on tapas or small plates and is located where Lure used to be.
Decor, Vibe – Luna Japanese Fusion Bistro retains Lure’s modern, funky decor. Place was 3/4 full with new customers trying out the place.
Menu
Menu has skewers, small plate tapas, Teppan-yaki, and Donburi rice bowls.
Huli Huli Chicken
Butter Mochi
Picks: Fire Poppers, Huli Huli Chicken w/Pineapple, Rib Eye Tataki, Big Eye Tartare, Luna Udon, Yakimono teba Chicken wing, Tasmanian Tower, Jalapeno Mussels, Salt and Peper Tofu
OK: Rib-Eye Yakimono, Chicken Yakisoba, Butter Mochi, Chicken balls, Udon
Pans:
Service – Luna Japanese Fusion Bistro had slightly above-average service probably because the place was so small.
Value – Prices are pretty standard for a small plate tapas restaurant. Meals can be an expensive if you order too many items and forget to larger plates.
Alternatives – Nearby restaurants include the two best Japanese restaurants in the area, Hotaru and Sushi Sam.
Verdict – Luna Japanese Fusion Bistro surprised us with decent food served in a nice atmosphere. We wish them well, and hope they can thrive in an area with too many Japanese restaurants. 10% off postcards by the door.
